(Also known as "Spice Island Saigon Saison").

On-draught @ Fatfish in Da Nang. 95000 VND per 325ml pour (~7x the typical price for macrolagers).

Saison. 7.20% ABV.

HEAD: Soft. Off-white colour. Frothy enough. Retention is above average (2-3 minutes). Leaves mild lacing as it recedes.

BODY: Vibrant clear copper with no visible yeast or lees. Not the milky and/or turbid appearance found in the style's best expressions, but not off-putting.

Appears well-carbonated.

AROMA: White pepper, Belgian pale malts, clove, ginger, rosemary, soft spicy Belgian (saccharomyces) yeast, subtly fruity hop notes.

No brettanomyces funkiness here, but the spice profile is pronounced and of adequate complexity. Seems well attenuated.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE & TEXTURE: A bit acidic with some subtle doughy yeast giving it hints of bread-like flavour. Subtle yeasty spice. No brettanomyces funkiness at all.

Belgian pale malt provides its approachable backbone. Tingly white pepper, a blip of ginger, rosemary, clove. Orchard apple. Maybe some pear too.

Balanced though simplistic for a saison. It's a bit too clean for a saison, lacking the rustic intangibles and farmhouse barnyard flavours (hay, leather, cedar, straw, etc.) that really make saisons sing.

Soft, refreshing, smooth, wet, light-bodied. Not sticky, gushed, or astringent. 7.20% ABV is hardly noticeable.

OVERALL: Its sterile flavour profile and clean attenuation put it in league with the myriad good-but-not-memorable saisons available in squeaky clean stainless steel microbreweries across the United States, but it's a far cry from real deal traditional Belgian expressions of the style. A great saison can be amongst the most intricate beer experiences there is, but that this is not. Still, it's miles ahead of the vast majority of beers available not only in Vietnam but Southeast Asia as a whole, and that it even invites comparisons to U.S. microbrew saisons is a testament to its quality. A drinkable brew I'll savour every drop of since it actually has flavour in a region beerwise largely bereft thereof, but if Pasteur Street wants to run with the big dogs, they're going to have to up their game.

07.17.16 2nd impression @ Buddha Bar in Ho Chi Minh.

Spicy aroma. Starchy. Belgian ale yeast esters. Wheat. Pale malt.
No overt white pepper. Suggests a dry spicy brew.

Taste follows the aroma. Not a highly complex taste for a saison, but it's competent.

Drinkable enjoyable stuff. Great to see a proper saison available in Vietnam.

On tap at the brewpub, served in a tasting snifter.

Pellucid yellow with light head. It smells spicy-sweet and distinctively saison-y.
Straightup non-funky saison with no surprises. Competent and on point, if a tad uninteresting for my personal tastes. Sweet, round, flat mouthfeel. If you like saisons you will like this. Wow.
