750 ml bottle, batch 2, poured into a snifter

A- Black with a two finger light tan head, great lacing.

S- Bakers chocolate, roasted malts, faint coffee, dark fruits, hints of vanilla, some caramel malts.

T- Cocoa, dark chocolate, some roasted coffee, hints of caramel malts, roasted malts, piney finish, faint vanilla, complex and well balanced.

M- Smooth, creamy, full body.

O- A well done Russian Imperial Stout. Very easy to drink for 9% ABV. Interested to see how is works aged in bourbon barrels.

Edit: Gets even better as it warms, holds it's own against barrel aged and adjunct imperial stouts.

2SP Brewing Co. "The Russian"
gravity poured cask @ the Yards Real Ale Invitational on 30 April 2017

Notes: Typical R.I.S. appearance with the exception of a shorter head, most likely due to both a softer carbonation in the cask and the bartender's pour. The aroma expresses dark chocolate and roastiness, with a bit of dark brown sugar/molasses, and a suggestion of dark-skinned fruits. Surprisingly clean and with the alcohol in check, the notes found in the aroma are allowed to shine freely and go unhindered in the flavor. It appears remarkably straightforward and focused, with the roasty/chocolatey components satisfying immensely. Additional notes of low-level coconut and vanilla. Balanced bitterness and alcohol presence... smooth roastiness without any harsh dark malt acidity... it's really quite dangerously drinkable, but at the same time missing a little bit of bite - perhaps because of the cask? I'll have to look for this on tap or in bottle.

Poured from 750 ml bottle with no visible date.

A: Dark brown tending towards black with 1-2 finger light tan head. Last retention with nice chunky lacing.

S: Rich roasted malts, dark chocolate, and vanilla. Hints of coffee and licorice.

T: Classic Russian imperial stout with bold roasted malts, baking chocolate, vanilla, and hints of espresso. Perhaps a touch of anise.

M: Full bodied but not thick. Fairly high carbonation for the style. Creamy texture with a slightly bitter finish.

O: I can see why this won the gold medal at GABF. A world class RIS for sure! Big thanks to @larryi86 for the chance to try it.

750ml bottle poured into snifter. It is obsidian with a foamy 2.5 finger khaki head. Incredible retention and a thick cap that remains until the very end with large blobs of lacing on my glass. Looks like a perfect 5! Aroma of big roasty malts and dark fruit. Bitter chocolate, molasses, toffee provide a nice sweetness. Very nice flavor of bold bitter chocolate, dark fruit, more bitter coffee and some licorice. The finish has a light bitterness. Creamy, rich and smooth with thick body. Carbonation is soft but very nice for this style. Great RIS and it reminds me of Narwhal and Founders RIS.

Deep dark brown where no light shines through. Small head that settles to rim bubbles. Good initial ring lade, scarce spots thereafter.

Powdered cocoa aroma with only a bit of chalkiness. Semisweet.

Very rich mouthfeel. Starts like a melted milk chocolate bar. The flavor is sweeter than most RIPs. With such creaminess, this is like a liquid chocolate bar, although it is darker and more bitter. One can feel the alcohol, but it is still subtle. There is a definitive hop presence, providing bitterness even if this isn't the predominant flavor. In the end, this is a wonderfully complex beer and one of the best RIPs I've had.

I've been trying 2SP beers as they come out to the Philly market... couldn't wait to try The Russian!

I was afraid my hopes were too high but The Russian didn't disappoint. Great dark-thick look, nice retention.

Creamy feel, like a nitro pour. Nice sticky feel. The nose is subtle, cold-brew coffee, peaty char... better as it warms up.

The taste is a nice mix of roasty-toasty goodness, light coffee, smooth chocolate, sprinkles of brown sugar and balsamic vinegar. All I want in an imperial stout!

Drinkability is high. So creamy and smooth... I could have pint after pint of this... beautiful

750 ml capped bottle

Pours black in color, dark tan colored head. Roasty aroma, coffee and bitter cocoa. Bold, yet we'll balanced, not too sweet. Thick, full bodied.
