On tap Gersthaus Evansville

A- dark copper amber, no head no retention

S- malty, and malty. Just kind of blah but that's alright I guess.

T- Malty, and for some reason I get some corn here, Taste good, a gateway beer I would think.

M- light bodied for a darker beer, and that's good because it's served in a fishbowl and it's cheap

D- very drinkable, helps that the price here is under 3 bucks for essentialy 24 or 25 ounces. Will have again someday

Always get this on-tap at the Gerst Haus in Evansville, IN. At $2.75 a fishbowl, you can't go wrong! Served in a frosty, this has a straw-gold color, smell is mild hops. Taste is very crisp, grassy and cheesy. Nice hop balanced with a good malt back. I can drink these all day. Nice thing is I can afford to, as well.

On-tap into a frosted mug. Bad form Gerst Haus.

A: Poured a clear orange with 2 finger head and very little lacing. Head receded fairly quickly to just a little surface froth.

S: Very bitter, plenty of alcohol scent.

T: Not impressed. Tasted like a macro lager with more alcohol and a dash more hops. Or a Boston Lager with more alcohol and less hops. No malts to speak of.

M: Very thin and watery.

D: It didn't help that this was served too cold. I had also finished an IPA moments before. I would like to try this one again on a fresh palate but for the time my advice is to not wast too much time seeking this one out.

On tap at the Mojo Grill in Nashville. Poured a light chestnut with nominal head. Rather thin mouthfeel, with a little bit more huskyness than would expect for the style. Average balance of malt and hops, but devoid of any real Bavarian characteristics. The only thing Germanic about this was the name.

On tap at the Sportsman's Grille in Nashville. Pours a clear amber with a medium off-white head. Light malt aroma. Medium bodied with a kind of bland malt flavor, along with a little caramel. Finish is short and sweet. Not too great but a nice find.

This beer was originally formulated and brewed by the Gerst Brewing Co. of Nashville, TN, circa 1890 but that brewery has been closed since 1954 and the beer has hopped around different contract brewers over the years. Today it is brewed by Pittsburgh Brewing, but is sold only on draught and only in Tennessee. It pours a deep amber with flecks of red and bears an off-white head that rapidly shrinks to a cap. Aroma is scant but sweet. Caramel malt dominates the taste but there's also a nice touch of roastedness, perhaps from the addition of Munich malt. Hops are there only for balance and do not provide any flavor. Mouthfeel is medium-light. There are richer examples of this style to be had, but this is a highly drinkable brew, excellent with food.
