Boi Friendz was brewed in collaboration with our friends @bluebeecider. To celebrate their Grand Opening of their new location in our neighborhood Scott's Addition, they asked us and the other booze producers in the neighborhood to create something special. Together, we brewed a 100% Brett IPA fermented with two Brett strains in two different wine barrels. One the wine barrels previously held Jeune(our single barrel young spontaneously fermented ale). The other was a freshly dumped VA red wine barrel. Right before we brewed the wort, we filled the barrels about 30% full with unpasteurized Gold Rush apple juice(that had begun wild fermentation). We brewed the wort with a heavy addition of Mosaic and racked it on top of the juice. It femented/conditioned in the barrels for 5 weeks. We then extracted the beer from the barrels and onto a ton of Citra dry-hops. The result is an incredibly complex, funky, hoppy, slightly acidic, full of tannins, IPA. We are very pleased with the results of this collab.

32 oz crowler purchased at the brewery on 10/18/16. Poured into Belgian ale glass.

Just read the description of how it's made above. Pretty crazy and a lot going on.

L: Pour results in 2F head with OK retention. Lots of lacing and a thin cap and ring. Beer is a cloudy golden orange.

S: Yeast, tropical and citrus notes from the Citra and lesser from the Mosaic. As you'll see from the taste, it's surprising the apple doesn't make much of an appearance in the nose.

T: Verrry interesting. The apple, slightly sour, is most up front, which is very odd for a beer, giving it a bit of a cider quality when the yeast comes in. But then the tropical quality of the Mosaic and Citra hops comes in, taking it in a new direction. The yeast comes back with the dankness of the hops as well. Finishes slightly bitter and dry. Lots going on.

F: Light body, light carbonation. Good construction and decent balance. Good drying.

O: Quite an innovating and interesting sour IPA. Not an every day thing and probably best suited to summer, but glad I got to give it a try.

The Veil have shown that they know how to brew a sour IPA, but a full-blown brett IPA aged in wine barrels? Yeah, judging from the aroma, they've got this down. The apple additions really pop once this opens up, working well with the Mosaic hops, gentle brett qualities, and barrels - they even nailed that hard-to-land blueberry character from Mosaic. There is a ton that's actually occurring within the nose and it doesn't come off as a clusterfuck. It doesn't fully translate to the flavor profile, however. The apple notes get a bit lost in the mix, but the brett funk is nicely nuanced (impressively so considering how young it is). Even better, the blueberry-laden Mosaic hops DO translate to the taste buds nicely, with a nice kick from the wine barrels finishing it off. It's a dry yet substantial beer that's incredibly easy to drink. More excellent work from The Veil.

On draft @ Blue Bee grand opening @ new Scott's Addition location.. pours golden color with fluffy white head. Aroma is somewhat funky w/ light malt, apple, white grape, gooseberry, other fruit.. Sorry not more detailed here, reviewing two days after drinking. Flavor basically followed the aroma with light bitterness, very slight tang, funk and oak. Feel is light, but with some body, and generously carbonated. Really enjoyed this offering. Great collab! Worth making this one again imo, just maybe with a little more age on it. I'd love to be able to buy it in bottles.. hint hint.
