Went and had a few there last weekend and the place was totally relaxed and inviting, with people spread out in all kinds of seating amongst the animal trophies throughout the place. It was a nice big open floor plan space with a very attentive and knowledgeable staff. While the prices are far from cheap, they had a ton of stuff on tap, a lot of 4-packs of cans to go, an a tremendous selection of bottles (mostly saisons and BBA stouts). The outdoor space was also very cool an it was the type of establishment I could have spent the day. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

Even with COVID restrictions, I loved the vibe here. Amazing mural work throughout the outside seating area, and the shipping containers give a cool industrial vibe that I enjoyed. Tap list was great; good variety, and I even got to snag a pour of their anniversary Grand Cru Sleeping Forever which was a nice surprise. Overall, definitely a spot I want to revisit down the line when I can walk around the inside taproom and ideally not be wearing a mask!

Richmond runaround day 2. Short attention span theatre and a need to see more and more. Saw some places I could have stayed at for a lot longer but you know this crowd is always on the move. Uber’d out and neighborhood played. And then we walked over to the Veil, ‘cause that’s how we so very slowly roll…

It’s a corner joint, that I’m thinking used to be a gas station maybe, or maybe not, or shut up, you’re drunk. Seating area out front in the parking lot; tables and benchings under a large canopy running between a pair of logo mural cargo shipping containers. There’s a dog out front barking, we think at (Evil) Davo because, well, yeah.

Muraled big brickiness with paneled garage windows. It’s a long narrow room that hooks around to the back there. It’s one of those ‘enter in, jump in line, wait on the ropes, belly up, get your beer, then stand clear’ kind of places. Long straight 2 tier bar of polished concrete, with a panel base & piping foot rest; seating for none. A large ‘The Veil Brewing Co’ marque light fixture sits over the bar. Above the barback, track spots on the mounted slat beer boards (beer, style, ABV, & pricing full and shorty), and others showing cheese & bread, nitro coffee, & merch. The mirror backed panel wall below holds 16 non-descript handles in a long row over a bar counter and glassware shelved below. A few more taps on stand up cylinder duos off a kegerator behind the bar, too. Shirts and swag displayed off to the right of the bar.

Concrete floors and black rafter ceilings with winding tracks across the room, cool white grape cluster lighting to the rear, and duct work throughout. Gray walls with paneled windows, mounted animal heads, & human hand lamps. So, now you’re thinking, “Yeah, but do they have a full size stuffed bear in the back corner?” Let me see, oh yeah, there it is. Check.

Large shared tables angled forward the bar and off to the side with some bar counter pieces along the wall. Small table and armchair action on the far end near the mural slat piece fronting the bathrooms. Cushy chairs around the bend back towards the rear with brew room views and the barrels stacked there.

17 beers up just now. It’s an interesting mix. Most of them are either IPA, DIPA, & TIPA hoppy (Toof Ache, IPA with Simcoe, Mosaic, & Columbus, 6.3%; Broz Broz Day Day, DDH IPA with Citra, 4.8%; Alone Alone, DDH IPA with Galaxy, 6%; Whiteferrari, DIPA with Citra & Galaxy, 8%; Dissect Me, DIPA with El Dorado, Citra, & Galaxy, 8%; Suspicious Treats, DDH DIPA with Galaxy & Motueka, 8%; Buried Buried Alive Alive, DDH TIPA with Citra, Mosaic, Galaxy, & Nelson, 11%), or sour, from abomination Tastee & Sour IPA, to Gose & American Wild Ale (Strawberry Swirl Tastee, strawberry vanilla sour, 5.5%; Pina Colada Tastee, pineapple & coconut sour, 5.5%; Boss Lady, Sour IPA with Mosaic & Nelson, 8.9%; Never Never Weak Weak, double strawberry & pineapple Gose, 5.1%; Never Fear, blackberry & apricot Gose, 4.9%; Unconditional, Trillium collab red wine barrel American Wild Ale with Galaxy, 5.5%). And then a few others to round out the mix (Child Support, Pils, 4.5%; Sentiment, Saison, 5.6%; Raspberry All That You Are, red wine barrel spelt farmhouse with raspberries, 5.6%; Double Peanut Butter Hornswoggler, chocolate milk stout with peanut butter, 7%).

As we were on the heels of hop-free Vasen, I stuck to the sour side (Never Fear, blackberry & apricot Gose; Never Never Weak Weak, double strawberry & pineapple Gose; Raspberry All That You Are, red wine barrel spelt farmhouse with raspberries; and Unconditional, Trillium collab red wine barrel American Wild Ale with Galaxy. They were all on point. Good sours are happening here.

I could do some time here (if that fucking bear in the back would just stop looking at me).

I don't like taxidermy, number 1 thing I remember about this brewery. The lighting was too dark everywhere. The mood of the place I did not care for. but the staff were fine. I didn't try an IPA here, I had a chocolate peanut butter stout, and a collaboration brewed lager. They were both good. The clothes for sale caught my eye, I liked the grey jacket and some of the shirts.

Arrived Saturday night, around 7PM. Pizza truck in the parking lot. Lots of people milling about outside. Inside was fairly crowded and DARK. Cool! Music was low-mid level, and popular.
Plenty of beer on tap, various stylesl The lines were a bit long, but hey it's Saturday. Staff was friendly, and quick to help out.

The beer was delicious. Can't wait to get back to Richmond.

V: This is a big, spacious building; this is a good thing considering it gets packed quickly. There's a long bar with a well-arranged menu above it. It has some seating in the center of the room, along with a large patio area (right beside the food trucks). As it is with a lot of brewpubs, The Veil makes everyone line up, and the line stretches around the wall to the door. Still, a cool spot.

Q: A high level of quality - everything's brewed on site. Nothing old or stale here.

S: The service was good and prompt, though I didn't quiz them on any of their beers.

S: A good array of beers (on about a dozen taps), but this being The Veil, it focused on IPAs (about half of them). They had a few random stouts, Belgians and pilsners as well. A solid lineup.

Located in Scott's Addition, this is probably the most hyped brewery in Richmond.

Vibe is industrial, with a large, almost barren room with a long bar with a bank-like line and tables on the floor and along the walls. There is also an outside area with very little lighting, which was a bit of a problem in late November. Service was quick and friendly, but the line system doesn't lend itself to a lot of small talk with the crew.

Selection is pretty varied, but leaning mostly towards IPAs and sours. I for one think The Veil don't get enough credit for their sours, because they really are excellent. They are obviously very good at the hoppy stuff.

Overall, I really enjoy the beers The Veil put out, but the place itself was a little bit of a letdown. Too loud and bare and a line system that was a bit too business-like. Not bad in any way, but I would probably come here to buy stuff to go rather than drink in if I lived in Richmond.

The Veil is a strange space. Overall it is decorated with a modern industrial style, though there are also stuffed animal heads and taxidermy positioned throughout the space. Inside is a variety of seating. Outside there is a patio area between shipping containers with seating and areas to stand and put your drinks. Based on the smell, I assume dumpsters are located fairly close to this space. Signage is not clear between lines for cans and pours to drink there. Merchandise is also haphazardly displayed. Menu is composed well however, and generous half pours are available. Beer is quite solid, around 25 choices of good beer- IPAs, fruited sours, and stouts mostly. The staff gave me a weird vibe that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Regardless they were quick, efficient, and accurate. Can take away process is efficient as well. The Veil is a must visit if you never have been. Its not a place I see myself spending all day at, though I would like to return for a few drinks.
