look: 2.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 3 | feel: 3 | overall: 3

Pours an effervescent straw with 3 fingers of cream colored head. No head retention & some lacing

S: Perfumy, lemony, & soapy hops

T: Grainyness, soapyness; too much (rinsed the hell outta my pils glass)& lemons up front. Soapyness dominates until this warms way up, then herbal & lemon hops sneak through. Finishes with a whisper of honey malt, a bit of pear fruittyness & then lemony & more soapy hops.

MF: Light bodied, so-so balance, with fairly hard carbonation that softens as this warms. Okay balance

Drinks okay, my advice, let this get to ale temp before drinking. As it was it warmed up quite a bit prior to sampling. Otherwise, you got a a blah, Czech Pils here

500ml brown bottle. no date. tasted in mid-may 2009.

clear golden straw color. 1-finger head fades to thin wispy layer. lacing is pretty sparse except for the bottom 1/3 of the glass.

aroma: bready malt, faintest hint of apple, lots of aromatic and floral/herbal saaz hops. but then... the apple comes in strongly again towards the back. whiff of sulfur (but bordering on skunk... uh oh...)

taste: similar to aroma, but a bit watery. moderate bitterness from the saaz, but not as fresh as hoped, mixing with possible phenol/fusel, and again that apple. green apple, to be precise - acetylaldehyde? "uh oh" again...

light body, smooth, with hint of astringency for a flash in the finish before smoothing out again. crisp, moderate carbonation.

i'm burping up skunk though...

i have a feeling this is an old bottle. the lack of a date or batch numbering scheme is almost never a good thing.

Got this 500mL bottle from Hoosick Beverage in Troy NY for $3.99. Served cold in a chilled pint glass.

This clear straw yellow brew initially gives an inch of eggshell head that sticks around quite well, settling to after a few minutes to a thin whispy layer and a thick meniscus around the glass. Pretty good, for what it is. Leaves a respectable amount of lace throughout the session.

Smell is a bit of pungent pilsner skunk on a hearty background of thick raw grains and silage with a tiny bit of diacetyl. The skunk fades eventually to reveal a little metallic twang and more sweet-ish silage.

The dry finish is of lightly buttered corn. Mouthfeel is light/ light-moderate (3 out of 10) thickness, slightly zingy carbonation. Taste is pretty unremarkable, I guess a bit of caramel and silage.

Poured this Czech style Pilsener from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. This Pilsener poured a clear golden color, produced an average white head and featured below average retention and left very little lacing on the glass. The aroma consisted off fresh baked bread, and grassy hops. Medium in body, this Pilsener had a base of malted husky malted grain, touch of lemon citrus, white pepper and bitter hops. Decent example of a Czech Pilsener, I believe this to be pretty authentic. Prost!

Zatec.

Another gift from the neighbor. He just must not have liked these brews since he seldom gives any thing away at import level prices. A clear bottled Czech Lager? iI must say I am a bit skeptical but let's see how it has held up.

Look - Pours a bit of darker golden than your average Euro lager with a fingers worth of bubbly white head that doesn't stick around for more than seven or so seconds. Carbonation appears to be on about medium with this one, and no lacing is anywhere to be seen. 3.25

Smell - Musk straight off the bat with a surprising though welcome dosage of clean maltyness without a hint of skunk. Grass is apparent without consuming the nasal passage. 3.25.

Taste - The musk is clearly on the forefront upon the time it touches your lips. The grass fades a bit and is only noticeable if you really choose to look for it. Once again no sign of the skunk in any way, shape or form. 3.25.

Feel - Carbonation is moderate and it sits a touch watery and easy going. No frills in this category. Flavors completely turn off. 3.25.

Overall - A bit above the average . Clean and easy drinking without any of the notorious off flavors. Not too shabby at all. If the price were lower I'd drink it as a go to when I need something to wash down beerlf brisket. 3.25.

Pours a clear golden color, nice foam and lacing. Skunky aroma, a bit husky, and decent use of hops. Spicy hop flavor, grainy, husky, lots of cereal flavors. Crisp, fairly easy to drink, but not a fan of the flavor, so wouldn't want too many in a sitting. I've had much better Czech beers.

Poured from a 500ml brown bottle with no date code. Served in a pilsener glass.

A: Clear, golden color with a white head 4 fingers high that had a nice amount of lacing. Lots of bubbles streaming from the bottom of the glass.

S: Crisp and floral hop aromas are dominant, with a citrus or lemony character. Very little in malt aromas, but there is a touch of malt sweetness smell.

T: Taste was clean and mainly about the mild hop bitterness. Something also had a souring aspect that was unpleasant.

M: Mouthfeel was a light bodied beer, with a medium amount of carbonation. Dry finish with a lingering bitterness.

D: I wasn't too impressed by this pilsener. The off-tasting sourness didn't leave me wanting another.

Classic Pilsener appearance, clear golden colored beer with no trace of chill haze and a good puffy white head. A little more head and it would have received a higher score.

Sharp Nobel hop scent and it isn't exactly shy. Herbal, grassy, spicy and a bit bitter smelling the malt is completely secondary here. Mild Pilsener malt, it mostly just stays out of the way.

The taste begins sweet and grainy, not what I expected from the smell. Malty for the style the hop is mostly a bitter aftertaste.

The mouthfeel is OK.

It is always a shame when a beer scores so well in appearance and smell but doesn't deliver in the taste department. This is an OK beer but just not a great one. I cold see tasting this again in Europe but there is no reason to get a six pack of this stuff.

16.9 oz bottle

Pours a clear pale straw color with a small white head that thins. Nice lacing around the glass.

Light, crisp pilsner malt aroma with a hint of spicy hops.

Light pilsner malt flavor with a very slight bitterness and touch of spicy hops. Clean, dry, bland finish.

Light body, decent carbonation.

Not a great Czech pils, but passable. Maybe the more aggressive American versions have spoiled me a bit, but this could use just a tad more "uumph". Even though, it slides down with ease.

Czech Pilsners are one of my favorite styles,
so I had high hopes for this one.

But I'm a bit disappointed.

The water character seems a bit minerally,
and the malt character seems weak.

Maybe the bottle isn't very fresh?

I think I'm getting a touch of sourness
from it also; not a good sign.

Poured from a half-liter bottle.

A- Golden with a creamy, snow white head.

S- Somewhat hoppy, but not as fresh and floral as many.

T- Refreshing, hoppy and citric, but not overly so.

M- Thin in body, but well carbonated.

D- Good for a nice warm day, but not as good as other Czech Pilseners.

Received from my salesman as a sample.

Served chilled and poured into a Weizen glass.

Appearance is good. Bright gold color with one finger worth of head on top. Decent amount of lace fills the inside of the glass. Many carbonation bubbles rapidly moving to the top. Spot on for the style.

Smell is average. Grassy hops jump out with an earthy malt background that evens things out.

Taste is average. Grassy again. Earthy malts again. Not much else. Finishes clean and bland.

Mouthfeel is above-average. Nice lively presence when it hits the pallet but finishes very thin.

Drinkability is above-average. To call this beer an easy drinker would be an under-statement. Incredibly smooth. Too bad the flavor and thin mouthfeel makes me not want another bottle.

Overall: A run-of-the-mill lager that does nothing to excite me. Not so bad for the style, but then again, it's not a style I'm into anyway.

(Notes of Aug. 2010) Tasted by a pint at a pub in London, served cold in a straight imperial pint glass.

A: golden in colour, a good white foamy head leaves nice lacing behind, lively carbonated.
S: understated notes of grassy hops plus light malts... very normal, or, a bit too light to be honest.
T: a clean palate of malts and weak hops is followed by fruity undertone of malts+hops, leaving a semi-lingering aroma of Saaz hops & grassiness in the end with a semi-dry palate.
M&D: clean, crisp, medium-minus bodied - all good, but pasteurisation has somehow taken away the real charm of a Czech lager that could be enjoyed more fully while being served unpasteurised in its homeland.

Gold color, with a thin white head that fades quickly, leaving some thin patches and a ring around the perimeter.
Smell is lightly spiced, bready malts with a very subtle touch of roasted malts and and buttery notes. Little bit of grassy hops in there.
Taste very lightly spiced malts with some faint grassy hops. Touch of spices towards the finish. A bit lackluster at the finish.
Mouthfeel is fairly smooth, with a little bit of crispness at the finish. Light body.
Drinkability is good. Nothing too exciting, but it drinks easily enough.

pours with a respectable pils head. lacing is damn fine! .. smell is of a fresh picked hop and honey corn flakes ... refreshing drink, good amount of bitters .... Not bad, would love to try fresh on tap! Goes down smooth but there is something just a tad off about it that makes it a good beer and not a great one..

A: Pours a bright straw color with a substantial white fluffy head that fades to light lace.

S: Mainly grain and grass with just a hint of Saaz hops and a touch of sulfur. In some ways closer to a Helles than a Pils.

T: A sweet start goes to a blast of hop bitterness in the center. There's an unusual puff of dryness just after the center, before a minerally-dry finish.

M: Medium body with minimal carbonation. A typical (Continental) Pils oil coating on the tongue.

D: A classic Czech Pils in some respects, but sweeter than I would expect. (That said, this is perhaps closer to the standard than the skunky bottles of Pilsner Urquell we can get in the US.) There is, however, a spice note that calls too much attention to itself to make the overall drinkability exceptional. (The spice note does lessen as the beer warms, FWIW.)

Clear, golden-yellow beer with a thick, white head that dissipates quickly. Moderate aroma of malt, noble hops. Crisp, classic pilsner taste with a slight metallic bite. Soft mouthfeel, low-moderate carbonation.

Overall, a pleasant pilsner. Very drinkable.

A - Poured out a clear, golden yellow color with a bubbly, white, three-finger head. It left small amounts of lace.

S - It smelled of grains/corn and a light malt.

T - It tasted of sweet corn and had a slight hop bite. Again, a light caramel taste.

M - It was crisp and smooth. A light-bodied beer.

D - Not great, but an average Czech Pils. Maybe a little over priced at $3 for a 1pint 0.9oz bottle.

Poured from 16.9oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: translucent, medium-straw colored with very limited head; practically no lacing.

Smell: very subtle aroma; the hops seem to have a very light floral smell.

Taste: not a whole lot of bitterness. Flavor is tipped toward the malty side of the scale, with not a lot of complexity; still not bad for a lager.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a lower level of carbonation than I would normally expect.

Drinkability: highly drinkable, although I think the unbalanced maltiness would get to me after a little while.

Pours with a frothy, initially three finger thick, light tan colored head. The beer is a brilliantly clear, rich gold color. Aromatic notes of sweet, butterscotch malt, grassy grain and spicy hops. This has a really inviting aroma to it, I really like the mix of hop and malt notes, though it could perhaps use a touch more hop aromatics.

Fairly dry, with an almost tartness, though not really. Biscuit like malt and a fresh grain character are accented by a hint of butterscotch. The beer is fairly well carbonated which provides an extra tingle on the tongue and a touch more palate cleansing character. Herbal hop notes evoke thoughts of lemon grass, hints of mint, fresh cut hay, and an almost green basil like thing. A touch of bitterness in the finish, as well as a touch of lemon-like tartness. This is on the dry side for a traditional Czech Pilsner, it seems to be lacking that malt fullness and even the diacetyl is a touch on the lower end. Still this is a decent beer, one which I would happily consume a few pints of.

Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle into a pilsener glass.

a - Pours a pale golden color that is very transparent, with high carbonation and an inch of white head.

s - Smells of wheat, bread malts, and a little yeast.

t - Taste again is mostly wheat and bready malts. Not too much going on here.

m - Light body and light carbonation. Very crisp.

d - Very easy to drink with the low ABV and light body, but there isn't much to the smell and taste...just some like wheat and bready malts. Not bad but wouldn't really look to buy again.

Poured from a 500 ml brown bottle into a clean, clear Sierra Nevada Anniversary Ale glass. No date that I could find on the bottle. Proudly centered on the top of my label is the interesting "Since 1004"

A Basic Lager look. Very light brown, yellow head ...almost white... with a clear yellow body with plenty of bubbles rising from the bottom. If someone poured it into a Bud pint then no one could tell the difference (on look alone!).

S Not much but what is there smells like a stronger version of Bud. Sure enough, they are both Lagers. There are grains, malt, not a lot of hops but it is notable.

T Nice lager. Grains, malt, some hops. Not dramatic but a very solid Lager taste. It is very much like a stronger, more flavorful Bud.

M Light, "refreshing." There is some softness that I appreciated later but overall the mouthfeel is not impressive.

D Really good (like I suppose most if not all Lagers would be).

Notes: I am not a fan of Lagers. This beer certifies that for me. It is just fine but that is the point...it is just forgettable. Life is too short to drink such uninspiring beers.
