Great beer. It was like a great Schwarzbier but with the added flavors and tickle of a great Weizen. Almost like Monchof Schwarzbier made love to some Vitus and had a healthy offspring. I had it in a glass as always, but it was funmny to read the text on the back which read something to the tune of: "Hefe-weissbier should always be enjoyed from a glass, never the bottle". Looked nice and dark with substantial aromatic head. Carbonation was nice and the drinking was refreshing. Good stuff.

Appearance: Pours with multiple fingers worth of rich creamy head which settled at about a finger and was present while drinking. Above average active carbonation in the glass while drinking. Some light gets in along the edges revealing a dark brown color.

Smell: Balanced wheat and some mossy, earthy hop aromas hit first. A big bready, doughy body follows up the initial nose. Lots of sweet toffee and brown sugar warm up as the beer does.

Taste: Lots of the sweet malt tones picked up in the aroma pop out first in this brew. Decent wheat body carries throughout. Medium bodied fruits ride this one out.

Mouthfeel: Light, smooth carbonation makes this a very easy drinker. Sweet malt tones leave a pleasant sugary texture on the palate.

Overall: Really easy drinking but nothing about this beer really grabs the drinker. Overall malt sweetness really makes itself known throughout.

Slightly different than a Dunkelweizen and not quite a full Schwarzbier, but firmly in the middle. The bottle was one of those cool German flip tops that made a loud pop when I opened it. It poured an opaque dark brown with a full head with great retention. Overall the palate was light and thin for such a dark beer and the flavor was subtle with roasted malt, caramel and a bit of wheat. The flavors became more pronounced and complex as it warmed. This was definitely a lighter beer than I was expecting, but a solid German beer nonetheless and highly drinkable.

Pours an ebony black with a two finger khaki head that settles to a thin layer that mostly sticks to the rim of the glass. Aroma is nothing but dark malt: roast, chocolate, coffee, toasted wheat bread, and a good dose of yeasty tartness with slight spice (allspice?). I get some sweetness in the flavor that isn't apparent in aroma, otherwise all the other malt characteristics come through in taste. Bitterness is mostly lacking in this beer with more of a light tartness coming on the back end. The feel is creamy and full bodied, with a sweet finish.

If I didn't know better I'd swear there was some oats in this brew. It's creamy and varied in flavor/aroma. And it's not too heavy. One of the best Weizens I've had in a long time.

A: Big foamy off white head, reminds me of a root beer float. Pitch black with hints of dark brown around the edges of the tall hefe glass. A thick yeast cake at the bottom of the bottle.

S: Light fruity aroma, (very traditional german lager like). a hint of roast. woody, earthy hop precensce.

T: Earthy and woody with very low wheat flavor. I don't detect any of the clove/banana esters that come with traditional weizens. Spicy hop vibe that lingers at the end.

M: Moderatly dry with high carbonation. a bit of a mouth drying astringency

O: If I didn't look at the label I would have guessed this as a straight Schwarzbier. Not bad, but I do like the esters the come through with hefe yeasts which i didn't get in this beer.

16 oz. swing top bottle poured into a snifter.

Pours out almost black, shows a slight ruby color in the edges. A nice 2-3 fingers of light tan colored head off the pour that eventually fades to a thick retentive layer. A bit of lacing. Maybe cloudy, somewhat hard to tell cause of the dark color.

Predominately fruits, plums mostly, they come out nicely as it warms. Fruity esters

Sweet toasty, slightly dark bready malts. Plums with some fruity esters, maybe a bit of blueberry and chocolate. Finishes light with just a hint of tartness.

Light body, somewhat smooth and creamy.

A fairly decent beer, tastes authentic but not really a favorite style of mine.

This is an excellent dark wheat beer.

Not quite fully black, it has a huge, creamy tan head slowly shrinking.

Aroma is rich coffee candy, chocolate.

Taste is balanced, zesty-winy, roasty grain (gentle but long-lasting), not strong but well-rounded and very engaging, a little like a schwarzbier.

Pours an opaque, murky dark brown-black with a 1 inch foamy dark khaki head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of roasted malt and some slight cocoa bean aromas. Taste is of dark roasted malt, burnt coffee, and slight cocoa bean flavors. There is a very mild roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but the smell is somewhat lacking compared to the taste.

Kapuziner Bavarian Schwarz-Weizen has a very thick, roiling, beige head and a cloudy, dark-brown appearance, with a little bit of lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of dark, brown wheat bread, banana, and white pepper. Taste is also of brown wheat bread, charcoal, some subtle banana, white pepper, yeast, and bitterness. Mouthfeel is mostly watery, and Kapuziner Black Wheat finishes wet and raw. Overall, this beer is just too watery in taste, although it does get a little better as it warms up. I suppose it’s worth trying.

Pours a molasses/cola deep brown, with a half finger khaki head. It fades, but laces the sides as I drink.

The nose is incredibly sweet. Not QUITE plum/fruit-ish, but kind of a molasses/gingerbread dough sweet. Undertones of wheat and chocolate.

The taste is underlined by wheat mustiness. There's some faint chocolate in there as well. Maybe some roast, and that kind of sickly sweetness present in the nose.

Thinner than I expected. Good carbonation, quite drinkable. Overall it's a decent beer, but nothing to write home about. Probably won't get one again, but would drink it if someone offered me one.

Appearance: Dark brown/black with a creamy tan head. It's a nice head but could hang around a little longer and lace better.

Smell: Licorice, brown sugar, toasted malt, sweet coffee.

Taste: Mollasses, sweet toasted bark.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nice carbonation and stinginess.

Overall: This is a great, tasty beer. It's sweet, but not too sweet. Nice blend of tastes. I'm impressed.

Appearance: Poured into a Weizen glass is a very dark colored beer with a rocky three finger head.

Aroma: Banana, figs, wisps of molasses, plum, raisins, grape.

Taste: Light smokiness, figs, dark bread, raisins, some grape towards the back. The mouthfeel is smooth with a malty bite to it.

Notes: This is amazing very drinkable anda very smooth finish. Cheers.

Dark, rich looking like a stout. Surprised how thin it tastes, almost watery. It certainly looks like the type of dark beer for a cold winter's night, but the taste is closer to a thin pilsner or even a Hefe. It just felt like it was missing that richness a dark beer usually delivers. Even so, I thought it was pretty enjoyable, and is great if you want a dark beer without that dark beer weight in taste. But it can be deceptive if you want a dark beer and all the elements a dark, heavy beer delivers.

Poured a half inch beige head which faded fast. Dark raw umber brown body, almost coffee. Smells of malt and bready yeast. The tast is an interesting combo with roasted malt, cola, sour rye, even a little tart fruit. There's an interesting acidic sour zing which reminds me of the start of a mild sour beer. The body seems creamy like a stout yet is very light. Finish is fairly long. I was really pretty impressed.

A: Poured from a bottle to a weizen glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick, muddy texture. There was a big, off white, long-lasting, creamy head. Average lacing.

S: A nice and sharp aroma of wheat and malt.

T: Tasted of wheat, malt, and that a hint of that typical bubblegum you get with most weissbiers. Not a terrible flavor, but very thin in the finish.

M: A good amount of carbonation with clean, smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: A bit uneven beer, but drinkable nonetheless.

Reviewed from notes.

Its...dark chocolate both in color and in primary aroma, one finger foamy white head with really amazing retention time. Holding the glass up close to a light source reveals that there is actually a remarkable lack of sediment for something so chewy and toothsome in texture. Smell mostly like a turbo charged chocolate malt and very little of the expected banana bread. It may have been mentioned before, but this beer really DOES smell more like a Schwarz profile (chocolate, chicory, roastiness and a certain level of acridness) and taste more like the cloven banana bread of a Weizen profile. Not that I'm saying that the Schwarz-like flavors aren't there, they just push back further into the background while the wheat comes forward for a turn. Its really odd how they take turns on your tongue like that. Body is well carbonated, medium thick, and manages to remain refreshing for it despite the relative boldness of the flavors contained within. Well worth trying just on novelty factor alone, but also exhibits some real care and craftsmanship behind the scenes. Straight 4's across the board.

Blackbier, the literal traslation from German. There is no mistaking this Bier for anything else. I am normally a fan of dark bier, and the one was very good, but the only thing is it really is black as night and it a bit more challenging for me to drink because of that. If you say the blacker the better, than buy this!!

A schwarz-weizen, you say? Well, okie dokie then

Pours a dark ruby red, which is mostly seen around the rim. The body is dark, slick brown...almost black. Nice foamy, rich, thick head, off white. Lacing is thin

Aroma is schwarz-y. Rich and full. Not much 'weizen' going on. Caramel and chocolate. Maybe some candied black plum

Now the taste is different, in that the weizen comes out a bit more. Banana and clove are there to dance with the chocolate and caramel. This isn't a flavor bomb, however. It seems a bit gooey up front, but the spice and yeast come in to thin it out.
The feel can use a bit more bubble to cleanse the palate and give more weizen character. Other-weiz this is a nice beer with a bit of a twist on the style

Code 2119124 stamped on bottle, but unclear what this means.
Poured into a Weihenstephaner weizen glass.

Pours a very tall (>4cm), self-sustaining head of a gray-tan color, a bit like the color of snow after it's been plowed out of the street. Head has very strong staying power, reducing very slowly to a 1cm cap atop the body. Leaves fairly good lacing, small swirls and streaks along the side of the glass. Body is dark chocolate brown, nearing black. When held up to a light, it's opaque, with the slightest bit of orange-yellow highlights along the edges. This is the darkest dunkelweiss I've seen, probably indicating a higher than average use of roasted malt. The very dark color of the beer with the gray-tan head looks very good in the Weihenstephaner glass.

Aromas are of wheat malt, some roasted malt lending charred and weak coffee scents, and clove-like phenols. The noticeable roasted malt character adds a fairly distinct scent profile to this beer, as no other dunkel I've tried has captured this. What it lacks (or gets covered up) from a typical hefe- or dunkelweiss, it makes up for with this specialty.

Taste opens with some malt sweetness and toasted malt flavors on the tip of the tongue. Mid-palate reveals the usual banana esters, but they are subsumed under the roasted barley and wheat malt flavors. There's a brief moment of slight, typical wheat beer tartness near the close, which normally lasts through the aftertaste in a classic wheat beer. Here, it's cut very short by the return of roasted malt and faint coffee-esque flavors. In general, think of a lighter wheat beer flavor joined to some roasted malt flavors (light coffee, smoke, char) and you have this beer.

Carbonation is medium to medium-high alongside the medium bodied beer. The combination goes fairly well together, perhaps a bit high in terms of carbonation. The effect is a fairly effervescent, crisp mouthfeel with a semi-dry finish.

Overall, I really enjoyed this variation on the weissbier theme. The components were unique and enjoyable. One I would drink again.

A- Dark opaque black/brown with a light cream colored head that had rather good retention.

A- Wheaty with a light fruity banana bubblegum aroma.

T- Wheaty banana bubblegum flavor. Faint bit of spice. Very slight amount of roastiness. Sweet malt. Finishes with a bit of a wheaty aftertaste.

M- Smooth medium body with light carbonation.

D- Quite enjoyable, but nothing special.

Swing-top bottle... very nice. America should really take a hint from the Germans and bring these back!

Fills lower tiers of my glass with a dark and murky brown thats almost pitch black once it settles in the glass. A large fluffy and dense cream colored head tops it nicely.

Aroma hints at toasted bread and grain upfront. Further exploration reveals the Weizen yeast withs its banana and bubble gum fruitiness and a moderate spice character.

A bit more roasty and toasty than your average Dunkelweizen, but tasty nonetheless. Some malty sweetness as well. Yeast character however plays a dominate role with a healthy dose esters and some clove like spice mixed in.

Mouthfeel is rather light and bubbly but finishes nicely. Overall, Kapuziner is a excellent authentic German weizen but it still leaves you wanting a bit more.

Pours black with a somewhat slight head that fades t a ring and leaves just the barest lacing. Smells bready, with a slight tang of the grain, and a note of caraway. A very light beer, one of the lighter dark beers I've had. The problem here is that there is a slight (very slight) roastiness, which doesn't add a lot to the beer in itself, but does negate any yeasty flavors, and once again there aren't a lot. For me, one of the great pleasures of a German wheat beer are the esters from the yeast with it's hallmark flavors of banana and clove, set against the backdrop of the soft wheat. Unfortunately I don't get that here at all, and there is no great roastiness or maltiness to compensate. Easy to drink, but doesn't hold my interest.

Pours a deep dark brown. The pour produced an abundance of frothy tan head that was dense and mousse like. Large hole would fill the foam like swiss cheese holes, get the idea.
This very realy opaque beer is also nicely carbonated.

Aromatics are simple and understated with wheat malts, yeast and roasted malts. There is a sutle presence of cloves.

Taste is wheat malts some clove and hints of roasted malts. The roasted malts also have some smokiness to them.

Mouthfeel is a bit thin and lite with some creamy slickness at the end.

A good dunkel and would drink more no problem.

Poured into a weizen glass.

A - Pours a medium brown, forming a fluffy off-white head. Medium spots of lace on the glass.

S - Bready malt aroma on the nose. Not the typical dunkelwiezen aroma as expected.

T - Light malt flavor, a hint of cocoa and a slightly wheaty aftertaste. No hop presence.

M - Light bodied with a typical German wheat beer mouthfeel. Average carbonation and very smooth and clean.

D - Flavors aren't the usual German wheat beer taste such as clove and banana. Still, the beer is enjoyable, clean and refreshing.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle (with a swing top) into a pint glass, unsure of the freshness.

Pours a dark brown almost black color with a large tan head. Smells of roasted malts, coffee and brown sugar. The feel is sort of light. The taste is also a little light, I get lots of coffee and a little roasted malts but its also a little watery. Overall not bad but I expected a little more from the look.
