16.9 oz. bottle poured into wheat-beer glass

L: red-brown ... ruby red-brown, not quite purple ... too much brown for that; clear enough for light to pass through visibly; pushes up a 2-inch head of tan foam is sticky at the top, and it's keeping a thick collar and skin; slight lacing but the pour is the highlight; beautiful beer

S: sweet dark dried fruits, prunes, dates; dusty plums ... very sweet, almost a caramel-maple syrup pancake or french toast with powdered sugar on top; buttery, lightly so, but like a buttery-chocolate donut; slight sour grain; chocolate

T: follows the nose but a bit watered down; dusty dark dried fruits, dates ... the dusty flavor turns into a nice oak-wood finish, a little smokey but just a little; raisins; the dusty/smokey/wood aftertaste is consistent

F: very light, crisp at first but softening into hefeweizen range quickly ... perhaps a tad soft and watery, but it's still enjoyably drinkable

O: fantastic beer; the nose is particularly special, and the oak-wood finish highlights a good range of darker-malt flavors; a beer I will buy again and again

Best before: April 3, 2016

L- Very dark brown, one can barely see through it. Tan foamy head with medium retention. Leaves a thin layer of foam.
S- Very weak. Malt grains, oat cookies, wheat.
T- Also fairly weak. Wheat, some spices, raisins and a very faint coffee note.
F- Carbonated, rich, full, silky.
O- Smell and taste are too weak for this to be really good. Just decent.

L: black like porter, but you can see through a bit, tanned foamy head.
S: roasted malt, banana/cloves
T: roasted malt, some metallic flavor, some sour notes (from roasted grain?), faint banana and cloves in the background, wheaty silky malt finish
F: medium body
O: looks wise it has some impact (never seen this dark dunkel or what they call "schwartz" weizen).

Had to really mess with this one for a few seconds to get the bottle open with its three-part hinge clasp!

A : Coffee brown-black with cranberry hues when held up to the light. 90% opaque. The head is beige, 3 fingers, and porous. Sticky lacing adheres to the sides of the pint glass.

S : Fresh whole wheat bread out of the bag, with the sweetness of the crust and perhaps even oats. Deeper whiffs yield horehound and anise, with a light beery aroma. The volume isn't very loud so deep nosing is required.

T : Much like the nose. Although somewhat weak in the flavor. Dark bread crusts, sharp and snappy black licorice, a mildly sour tang of yeast underneath, and finishes with "what's like" a singed hop leaf with a torch. Some mild coffee also can be tasted.

F : The mouthfeel is largely creamy, dense, and sticky. Ends linear.

O : A nice bready, oaty, dark-crusted beer with some notes of anise and light roast coffee. I think I'd rate it higher if what was present here was just a little stronger. However...I'd buy this again. I'm not sure how much I paid for it, I don't think it was much, maybe $6.99? Yeah I'd get it again. This was sweet. Not the best Dunkel but still not half bad.

Pretty bad beer, I think I might got a bad batch because it has good ratings. Very acid in the taste and a bit astringent in the after taste. Smells and looks right for the style.

Poured from a 500 mL swing-top bottle into a weizen glass. Stamped 2320174.

A: Deep brown body that take on an opaque black appearance in the glass. 2 fingers of slightly rocky, off-white head. Good retention. Light lacing.

S: Nutty, chocolate notes with underlying banana, raisin, plum. Light coffee. A bit of port, a touch of smoke.

T: Lightly tangy, roasted malt notes open, intermingled with sweeter, fruitier wheat notes. A tempered, noble-type hopping arises late for a semi-dry finish. Minimal alcohol presence. Lingering wheat-fueled fruit and spice in the aftertaste. This one starts a schwarzbier and ends a hefe.

M: Moderate carbonation with a light to medium body. Feels like a hefeweizen.

O: Struck me as an above average hefeweizen with some flourishes of schwarzbier-like malt that are more present in the nose than on the palate. A bit different from other dunkelweizen that I've had. More of a nutty, tangy roasted malt than the typical dried fruit, raisin. Easy drinker. Good stuff.

Prost!
