My second birthday beer is yet another bottle, but I am excited to try this one. I am more of a fan of the hoppier Czech Pilseners, but a German Pils will do. It also gets me one more step closer to the eradication of the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody.

From the bottle (translated from German): "Brewed according to the Bavarian purity of 1516."; "Our Edelherb is the first Kulmbacher Pils and is brewed according to the original recipe. In memory of the brewer's family. [undersigned] D Reichel"; "With noble aromas. Brewed according to the original recipe. Quality is no accident. Over 40 ongoing checks ensure that our noble heritage is always the most demanding. [undersigned] R. Wallace Head of Quality Assurance".

I Pop!ped the cap and began a moderate pour, but it was rich in carbonation & quickly formed a finger of dense, foamy, bone-white head with great retention, forcing me to back off. Color was Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 -5) with NE-quality clarity and I girded myself for the arrival of the Gelt Gang of Mammon, Midas & Croesus. They surprised me with a modest entrance, carrying a cake with candles & some balloons for me! They even allowed me to drink first before starting in, in earnest. Nose was more metallic than I am used to, but it still had a bready quality. Mouthfeel was medium, but very carbonated. The taste did not really follow the nose as I did not sense anything off about it. Instead, the taste had the honey-drizzled biscuitiness that is the hallmark of the style. Finish was clean, crisp & dry. A very refreshing drink on an unseasonably warm day in late-Febrewary.

$ 2.64 (Including tax)/11.2 oz bottle ($ 0.236/oz) at The Lager Mill, Frankenmuth, MI.
Standard euro export 330mL bottle marked 2624172 stored at 42 degrees. Served at 42 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Aroma – grassy and grainy.
Head large (Maximum six cm, aggressive pour), white, dense creamy froth, average retention, diminishing to an irregular ten to eighteen mm frothy ring and a frothy partial layer fed by the effervescence.
Lacing – partial rings of thick froth.
Body – golden, clear, effervescent.
Flavor – lightly grassy with a little hop bitterness and just a hint of malt. No alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate – light, watery, lively carbonation.

A very good pils, something I no longer consider an oxymoron.

Appearance 4, Aroma 4.25, Flavor 4.25, Palate 4.25, Overall 4.5.

A very heavy, thick brown bottle. I appreciate good glass.

The beer itself pours dark gold with a minimal head and decent fizz. The aroma is that of a rather fresh-seeming Munich pils: grassy and floral with some light, spicy hops.

Tastes like a classic example of the style, but that classic-ness is made all the more conspicuous by the fact that it's so fresh-seeming. I don't know if I just lucked upon an especially recent shipment, or maybe if the heavy-duty glass does some good work in lessening the effects of time. The recipe is simple: grass, hay, flowers, hops, and then a dry finish with zero esters. It's just done very well.

Overall, this lacks the "oomph" factor found in my favorite versions of the style, but it was nonetheless a very enjoyable and well-made beer.

Poured in to my pilsner glass a dull golden with a nice big, fluffy white head with a nice bead.Aromas of toasted grain a touch of iron with an odd and interesting teaf leaf-like aroma thats subtle but noticable. This is one dry ass pilsner and very crisp, a light spicey/peppery bite hits in the finish very firm dry bready malt backbone stands up to the very dry, spicy finish.Damn fine pilsner my father in law from Hanover,Germany loved it as did I.

Poured crystal clear, golden, with a short-lived white head that left some spotty lacing.

While the light malt dominate the hops in the aroma, the reverse is true of the flavor, with the hops more prominent even in mid-taste.

M: medium+ carbonation; medium body.

O: no flaws but nothing stands out either.

Clear and golden with a decent white head, some retention, and sparse lace. Aroma is full of bready, grainy malt with a little tea, spice, and mild floral hop. Refreshing as expected. Taste is malty, lightly sweet, quite dry, and floral and spicey. A nice mild bitterness is apparent too. Mouthfeel has a good amount of crispness along with some grainy grittiness mixed into the smooth. Mmmm drinkable.

Great pils. One I would like more of.

A drinkable crisp drink. Floral hops. A touch of creamy head. Nice subtle bitterness to it. Smooth, with spice on tongue. Malty finish, went well with dinner. Light to Medium mouthfeel. Good carbonation, Good summer beer, good German pils. A good find.

This one pours a very clear, light straw color. There's nothing particularly special about the color. But, the head is a very impressive foamy white monster that's about three fingers tall. It never completely dissipates and left a sticky web of lace behind. Not bad.

It's a little weak on the nose. Grainy and grassy notes are prominent. It doesn't smell vegetal in any way, which is a very good thing. Hops are noted and are mostly floral and earthy. They're not very strong, but I'm pleased just to report their presence. There's just enough malt to give it a slightly sweet smell. A little more strength might reveal some finer nuances, but it's just not here.

This is a pretty damn tasty Pilsner. Grain and grass flavors start things off nicely. A touch of malt sweetness is noted. The hops are the best aspect of the flavor. They're mostly floral, but there's some spice variety here. Citrus lemon and orange flavors are a little buried, but they're definitely here. It finishes spicy and a little dry. It's pretty straight forward and uncomplicated, but is impressive nonetheless. I like it.

The body is medium and is nearly smooth. Carbonation is active and crisp. The hop spiciness tends to convulate the feel a little toward the end. It's tough to tell just how smooth it really is. Drinkability is above average. I like the flavor pretty well and it's easy drinking. I can't say there's enough here to captivate me for more than one bottle. But, it's far from bad.

Premium Pils is a nice German Pilsner. I wasn't expecting it to be great and it's not. But, it is probably more impressive than I expected. It could use a little work on the nose. More punch is needed there. It's a minor problem, but it's the most notable. Otherwise, it's not too bad and is a nice take on the style overall. It's definitely worth picking up if you bump into it.

On tap at Tap and Table in Emmaus, PA for $5 a pint. Appears a clear, brilliant gold with a white head. The aroma is a little muted, but the lightly toasted grains shine through. The flavor is classic German Pilsner with hard, hard mineral water that tastes like it came from a well. There's just a mild herbal hop note in the background in this otherwise crisp and bready beer. Try this beer if you dig the style and love German brewing water.

Kulmbacher Edelherb Premium Pils brewed by Kulmbacher Brauerei AG, with an ABV 4.90% This brew pours nice amber color, with a nice white head. It has the look of most Pilsener brews on market. Not saying that is a bad thing. The smell of Kulmbacher Edelherb Premium Pils, is rich with malts, grains , and hops. The smell is nice and inviting. Now for the the taste, it is bold with flavors. I like the taste of this brew. You pick up on the hops and malts , in this brew. There is nothing overpowering about Kulmbacher Edelherb Premium Pils , it has a nice balance to it. The mouthfeel of this brew is rich, full bodied, and clean. This is a nice smooth drinking brew. Overall I'm giving Kulmbacher Edelherb Premium Pils a 4.5 out of 5. I would buy this brew again.
