Pours a muddy light brown tea color which then develops into a nice, shiny dark brown body with a finger of bubbly khaki head.

Aroma is powerful. I could smell it as I was pouring it. Overwhelming amount of chewing tobacco and bourbon, almost exclusively. Underneath it though lies some nice leather, oak, and grape tannin as well.

Flavor is insanely delicious. Similar to the nose, but it starts with mint and tobacco, followed by hot caramel, ash (politely welcomed here), bourbon, cinnamon heat, oak, more tobacco, and finally leather. It just keeps rolling around flavors in the mouth and savoring it is a real treat.

Feel is one thing I noticed even before the flavor kicked in. Delightful thickness but not like an imperial stout; more like a really creamy, warm, coating that wraps around the tongue and warms it like a winter's fire. The heat is about perfect and does not thin the beer out one iota.

Overall, this beer is an incredible offering. Best barrel aged lager I've had in a long, long time.

Bottle from Boise Co-op. Pours out a silky smooth dark brown with a small ring of head. Dark, roasty malts, slight bourbon aroma. Taste is super smooth, slides over the tongue. Roast malts, brown sugar chocolate, wood. Alcohol warmth comes in late and lingers. Excellent!

2015 Vintage

Pours deep ruddy brown body, dense and opaque, with lighter highlights at the surface, and topped with a half finger of bubbly beige froth; below-average head retention leaves a large, bubbly, and frothy collar, a few paper-thin islands of cap, and minimal lacing.

Aromas open with brown bread doused in milk chocolate and oaky barrel tones including vanilla bean, toasty brown sugar, and slight molasses; Fig Newton, grape, and cherry/raisin compote develop a fruitier aspect over time while a touch of smoked malt grazes the close.

Taste brings forth bready malts touched with a smoky char offering a heft to the profile upfront, softening with an extended grape and fig interlude; lightly spiced toffee and tobacco come around on the back end, becoming a touch leafy before a milk chocolate and cigar box exhale.

Mouthfeel shows a moderate-heavy body, smooth and consistent, with a low carbonation; silky mid-palate becomes almost creamy, with an extremely well-hidden booze holding just enough weight in offering a robust yet easy swallow.

A barrel-aged doppelbock touched gracefully by time, with 5 years in the bottle allowing no shortage of nuance and complexity to shine through while evening out any of the rougher aspects that may accompany the 11% ABV; a hearty yet easygoing sipper around its peak for aging and showing impressive intrigue for both the nose and palate as a result.

Probably 3 years on this bottle.

Poured into a Trillium glass a very nice dark brown color, very nice carbonation, with a very nice thick/creamy one-finger tan head, which leaves a pretty nice medium size island and some sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, with some chocolate/toffee, pretty nice dark fruit complex (cherries, figs, raisins, grapes, plums), some bourbon/oak, some roastyness. The taste is really nice, malty, with a really nice touch of bourbon, some oak, with some nice chocolate/toffee notes, roasty, pretty nice dark fruit complex (cherries, figs, raisins, grapes, plums). Full Body, ABV hidden very well, a pretty complex brew. Overall, still a very tasty brew. Thanks Bill!

I knew I had to buy this, a barrel aged doppelbock, oh yeah. The beer is from 2015. Poured into my Bruery Glass from the bottle. The hard pour produced a one finger head. The light tan head is creamy and foamy. The high alcohol content gave the beer's head poor retention. The color of the beer is dark brown. The clarity of the beer is opaque. When I put light on the beer, yeast spots are visible on the sides of the glass.

The barrel age in the beer pulls to the front of the aroma. Huge malty notes, caramel, little Maillard, vanilla, oak, chocolate, and bready aromas from the beer.

The barrel age on the beer is not overpowering, just the right amount of time. The flavors in the beer are chocolate, Maillard, vanilla, oak, bready, and toasted malts.

The mouthfeel of the beer is vicious. The body of the beer is medium-plus, light carbonation, and a medium-plus finish.

Seriously one of the best doppelbocks that I have ever tried. The Maillard in the beer is discernable but not overpowering. The barrel age on the beer gives it balance and harmony. The flavors in the beer are a delight. Probably the best beer from Grand Teton Brewing I have had. The alcohol is hidden quite well.

2015 edition, my bottle says 11% abv. this is incredible beer, one of the best i have had from grand teton, but i now know that these little bottles they put out are always fire, and to seek out at all costs. people may tire of their base beers, or at least forget about these guys because thats all you ever see, but let me tell you, its these releases that solidify these guys as one of the best breweries out there, and nothing exemplifies that more that this bock. its a deep deep mahogany red brown color with a frothing mature patient tan head, thick as cool whip and lasting in my little stemmed lambic glass, so pretty, crimson and glowing, thick though, wintery and heary, gorgeous! i get the bourbon right away in the nose, woody from the barrel and boozy, but less vanilla and caramel or toffee or maple than i usually find in these, the lager yeast seems to cut through that aspect, leaving the wood and even barrel char behind, along with the rich breadiness of the malts, slight soy in a good way, and birch wood or something other than oak to me, its awesome and complex and regal and all of that. the flavor is right there with the nose, rich is the first thing i have to say about it, theres a lot going in here and its all mature and intense, with the wood way up front, more bourbon, a hint of fresh ginger for a flash and the soy there with it, char, heavy caramel malt, english barleywine-esque, just awesome stuff all the way through. this is special beer, as good as the style get for me from anywhere. insanely good beer, perfectly barrel matured, and just so next level. aged brilliantly. how do i get more???

Poured from a single-serve into a tulip--just to focus the barrel-aroma

Pours an unexpectedly dark, nearly opaque brown with not much head but a strong, thin and persistent lace. A nice-looking beer for sure.

The aroma is deceptive. Sweet malts are very present, mostly as dark fruits, followed by a mixture of barrels and a surprisingly welcome dash of zesty grainy yeast. The barrels are dank and musty and inviting. Though the bourbon notes are present, they aren't overpowering as in many bourbon-barrel aged offerings. The bourbon is there as a flavor--it isn't boozy or spicy at all.

The restraint on the bourbon and booze present in the nose is contradicted by the flavor--but not in a bad way, just an unexpected one. Big, malty and surprisingly fruity flavors swim in a bourbon-barrel-booze mixture. The alcohol is noticeable, but isn't a 'burn". It's fairly well-rounded and warming instead of biting. Still, this one almost reaches "sticky" or cloying, though the barrels and grain/yeasty notes save it from disaster.

Overall, this is an intriguing take and an interesting combination of flavors, but it skews a bit boozy and sweet. Still and all, a nice unique brew. I'll try again to see if I'm being rugged.

L - Pours dark brown with a nice tan head.
A - Sweet smell of malts.
T - Taste is excellent with nice but not overpowering barrel, sweet carmel malts, and very good sweetness of dark stone fruits that you typically get from a very good aged Belgian.
M - Enjoyably sticky.
O - This was an excellent malt forward beer - highly recommended.

Deep, dark, tawny hued body; thin yet creamy light tan head. Very faint roasted grain aroma; caramel notes. Fig and date flavors backed with a boozy, roasted grain backbone; boozy with an oaken quality deep in the background. Heavy body; slick and chewy; vinous; warm.

The beer delivers a big, boozy, heavy doppelbock quaility with a decided bourbon fiery edge. It comes across rather bold and heavy-handed but ultimately pleasing.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown with a thin, light brown head that dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of caramel malt and bourbon, hints of dark dried fruit and oak. Flavor follows with caramal malt, figs and dates, bourbon and good vanilla and oak from the barrel, finishes malty and bourbony. Medium bodied with good creaminess, but light carbonation. Didn't know what to expect from a barreled doppelbock, but this was a good idea. It's like an English barleywine with a bock malt body and lots of bourbon to finish it off. Well balanced and flavorful. This is really very good. I was impressed by Double Vision when I tried it and it clearly has the substance to be the base for other great ales. Kudos.

Review No. 900, couldn't have picked a better local to review for this occasion, thanks for sharing Matt!

Half-grower of the latest GT variation of this brew, BA says 11% abv, BA picture and GT confirms this as 10% abv. Poured into a wine glass.

Pours a gorgeously silky smooth opaque brown-to-black with a subtle finger-and-a-half of dark tan head that recedes to a nice ring. Ample aromas of bourbon and sweet malt character pour out of the glass without a dose of hot booziness...caramel and vanilla are apparent as well as the big bready malt backbone...hard to tell if the small dark fruit component to this one is from the barrel, malt bill, or lager yeast, but it all combines for a freaking WIN on the nose and palate. Everything is so well integrated, the malt and the barrels work SO well together. Big full body without being cloying or boozy; alcohol spirit cuts the chewiness of the beer but just makes the overall experience more awesome. Bourbon-soaked bready malt for days...

Wow, I am blown away, and would recommend this to anyone who loves big, barrel aged dark beers. I think this may be the finest brew Idaho has to offer. Cheers GT!
