Howling Wolf Weisse BierHowling Wolf Weisse Bier
Notes: Howling Wolf Weisse Bier is an unfiltered Bavarian-style Hefeweizen. Brewed with a hearty amount of wheat, this Weissbier pours a light clouded golden color with a generous head. Gently hopped to balance the malt sweetness, Howling Wolf’s flavors and aromas are subtle with a hint of fruit and spice. At 5% alcohol by volume, this light-bodied ale is a refreshing session beer for any time of year.

Poured from a single-serve bottle--born 9/10/15, so about a year old.

Look--Lacks the classic "rocky" head. More of a "fizzy" look.

Smell--Checks the boxes for the style, but that is about it. Banana, coriander, and wheat.

Taste--As expected for an American take, a little out of balance--in this instance, a strange bitterness, with an equally jarring sweet aftertaste.

Mouthfeel--Probably the best aspect of this brew. A nice crisp dry finish.

Overall--I'm a big fan of this brewery, but this isn't my favorite offering. This isn't a "miss" for me by any means, but it isn't their best effort.

Flavor is definitely there, but the appearance is lacking. A good weizen should have a thick, fluffy head. This does not. Aroma and taste are spot on, taste(banana and bubblegum)is a little sweeter than the German native varieties A good effort, but a little ways to go.

Strong chemical/ artificial taste which other reviews have mentioned. Particularly agree with the review by rawfish, it tastes of detergent powder, is over carbonated, and the malt lies dead flat on your tongue, this was one of the first beers I have ever poured out the rest of instead of finishing and I will finish almost anything. particularly disappointing for me because I love wheat beers and always hope to find domestically produced ones that compete with the Belgians and Bavarians, this is NOT one of them.

Underrated. One of the more surprising beers I've had in a while.

Pale yellow to dull orange in color from bottom to top, depending on thickiness of swirly haze, capped with fine, fluffy, off-white head of medium retention and amazing webs of lace. Strong buttered bread, spicy yeast, just barely banana, and maybe a little Band-Aid aromas. Very bready and a little tart throughout, with more so bubblegum than banana notes, though balanced well with wheat character. Mild cloves in the middle. Also in the back, but combined with gentle hoppiness. Very bready finish and aftertaste. Medium-bodied, creamy, smooth, with medium level of mostly sudsy carbonation. Very refreshing hefe. Have not had one in quite some time.

I had the fancy 22 oz. bottle with the ceramic cap and it was completely flat. Here I am reviewing the 12 oz. bottle and it was OK.
A: Pours hazy gold under a 2” frothy white foam collar that grips the side of the glass.
S: Light fruit, a hint of banana, very minimal clove, whitwe bread.
T: Yeast driven. Has a rich yeasty malty sweetness with light fruit. The banana flavors are medium light and the clove flavors are light.
F: Creamy, medium full body, medium high carbonation.
O: This is an easy to drink hefeweizen. Those looking for big banana and clove flavors might want to look elsewhere.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a slightly hazy golden-orange color with a small head of bubbly white foam. The head fades super-fast, leaving almost no lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is heaviest of a yeasty smell along with other aromas of a more wheaty and bready smell. Mixed with these smells are some aromas of fruit and spice, with the fruit being a mix of orange, banana, and pear and the spice being of a clove and coriander nature.

Taste – The taste begins as a blend of fruit and wheat with the fruit being of an orange and pear nature. There is also a decent showing of some yeast and spice from the start with these flavors getting stronger as the taste moves onto the end. The spice is heaviest of a coriander nature upfront with more and more clove and pepper joining later on. Other sweeter tastes of banana and a slightly candied sugar taste join the flavor profile later on, leaving one with a rather sweet, yeasty, fruity, and nicely spiced flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thinner side with a carbonation level that is rather average. For the fruity, sweet, and yeasty tastes of the brew the feel was rather nice making for a rather crisp and refreshing but flavorful brew overall.

Overall –A rather nice easy drinking and slightly sweeter and yeastier hefe. Not a bad summer style brew.
