Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a standard pint.

A: Black. Pours a 2 finger, frothy, brown head. Settles slowly, but not completely. Some thick beer ring lacing.

S: Roasted malt grains, molasses, chocolate, and butterscotch.

T: Roasted coffee. Bitter unsweetened dark chocolate. A little black licorice.

M: Full and hearty. Bitter finish. High alcohol feel.

D: Sip and enjoy.

Atmosphere is pretty strong. Really nice head, and some persistent lacing. Nose is roasted malts with sweet components characteristic of the style. Charred coffee beans, bittersweet dark chocolate and licorice. Overall, this is a pretty good quaff.

This is a review of this beer on tap.

Pours to a 1 inch light tan head that settles down to a 1/4 inch permanent head leaving ample lacing. Clear and ruby black. Aroma is creamy, chocolatey, mocha-like and malty with spicy, citrusy hops peeking through the grains. Flavor is standard American porter: strong on hop flavor and bitterness, roasty and on the dry side. Medium-full mouthfeel and nice roasty and pleasantly bitter/hoppy finish. A very "American tasting", well-made porter. this is what a porter should be.

Bottle > Hop Sun 16oz'er

A - Pours a dark ruby brown, thin fizzy head, no lacing.
S - Big earthy roasted aroma, some light hop tones, a little chocolate.
T - Follows pretty uniform to the aroma, but there's a decent amount of bitterness here, big roasted malt taking the fore, some darker dried fruit flavors and chocolate.
M - A little on the thin and fizzy side, not too good.
O - Not a bad porter, but not something I'd go to again.

A: DARK brown. Finger of head that dissipates slowly.
S: Chocolate. Lots of Hershey's Chocolate flavor. Malty. Sweet Malt.
T: Roasty at first. Lots of chocolate ends the flavor. Wow. Exceptional for a porter. So much flavor. Malt sits on palate for a bit.
M: creamy... small carbonation. Smooth finish that allows for plenty of after taste.
O: Wow. Very impressed for their porter.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a New Belgium tulip

Appearance: pours pretty black with just a little brown around the edges when shown to the light. . Little tiny bubbles form a 3cm head that dissipates rather quickly.

Smell: the roasted malts are kicking up some coffee and chocolate.

Taste: A lively combination of carbonation/chocolate/coffee dance on my tongue. It actually has a dry bitterness at the end.

Mouthfeel: Nice carbonation that you definitely feel on the tongue. A slight drying factor.

Overall: Got this in a beer of the month package and most of the time I am fairly disappointed with them. This one I am not. Pretty much has everything you want in a porter.
