Mosaic Session IPAMosaic Session IPA
Notes: Formerly Mosaic Session Ale

Before the Mosaic hop even had a name (back when it was just known as “HBC 369”), our brewers couldn’t wait to get their hands on some. Mosaic Session IPA is bursting with vibrant grapefruit aroma and flavors of citrus and tropical fruit. Our signature dry-hopping technique delivers an incredibly drinkable lower ABV beer without sacrificing hop appeal. From a small test batch to the bottle you now hold in your hands, this isn’t a one-and-done beer. Sit back, have a few, and enjoy your session.

Light copper and clearly filtered with moderate carbonation and a half finger of white head.

Smells of malt, and a touch of caramel and children's aspirin.

Taste of light tropical fruit, blueberry, and caramel.

Light body with a little foamy carbonation.

I got this in Roseville, CA and am drinking it in Redding today. Decent, light, and perhaps I got a bottle past its prime.

Great session IPA. Pours a slightly hazy gold color with a small foamy head. Average head retention and thick lacing. Aroma is very good. So much tropical fruit aroma that you would describe it as much floral in addition to citrus. Flavor is good too!!! Average IPA bitterness and a variety of tropical fruit flavors including passion fruit and mango. Mouthfeel is crisp, mildly bitter and rich enough for an IPA, without having to say "session". I had it on tap at the Sea Salt restaurant in Torrey Pines CA. Would look forward to drinking it again.

12oz can, date stamped 3378. Golden body with slight chill haze, frothy white head hangs around for a minute or two. Juicy Mosaic aroma of tropical fruit and citrus. Juicy hop flavors hitting bright notes of passion fruit, grapefruit, lemon-lime, and tangerine; malt base is mild but adds sweetness by means of light caramel & biscuit. Medium body, tart bitterness, fairly clean and balanced finish. Great flavors, easy drinking, and a good one when you want to sit and have a few.

Color is very light yellow/amber with minimal head. Notes of melon, tropical fruits (guava, papaya, pineapple, etc.), pine, hops, and perhaps lemon grass. Taste is very light with bitterness well balanced. Very clean, light, crisp IPA. Great for a hot summer afternoon.

massive white foam but with coarse bubbles, seemingly a little overcarbonated - do they bottle condition? yellow with orange, lots of carbonation, slight haze when sediment is poured.
Good Mosaic hop aroma, sweet mango, blueberries, vanilla even
Taste is rather simple with clear hop long lasting hop bitterness with some fruity touch to it. The malt is hardly noticed.
Quite fizzy but not watery thin which is nice for a session beer.
Remarkeable session ale.

Pours a tan gold color. There's a nice almost melony note to it with a crisp finish. Easy drinking and enjoyable. I wouldn't mind drinking another one of these.

Poured from 12oz can into Spiegelau IPA glass. Canned on July 10th 2017.

L: Pours a clear, light gold, with a big fluffy off white head that retains quite well.

S: Aroma is mainly the Mosaic, giving off very fruity and herbal notes, seems as if there is a nice malt backbone for this too.

T: Again, there is a lot of Mosaic present here, nice clean and refreshing flavors, of grapefruit, light herbal grass flavors, and a nice light biscuity like malt. Very nice.

F: Light, crisp and semi-dry.

O: Definitely sessionable, the hops don't hit you in the face like many IPAs today, they are nice and light flavors. I have always loved Mosaic hops and Karl Strauss used them very well in this brew.

A: Moderately high hop aromas of tropical fruit, berries, and slight earthiness.

A: Light golden color, totally clear with a thick white uniform head. There is light lacing in the glass.

T: Moderate hop flavors of tropical fruit, berries and earthiness, there is a light malt presence, coupled with a moderately light bitterness. The beer finishes semi-dry.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: Pretty solid; the beer has a light clean malt presence and really lets the mosaic hop shine.

Poured from the bottle into a pint glass at CoCheese in Shanghai, China.

A: the beer is a clear golden color with an off-white head that last a minute or so.

S: Citrus hops, honey, light grass, bread. Very fresh!

T: Very balanced. Floral hops, fresh taste with some light bread and a little sweetness

Overall: I usually don't like lighter beers like this but this beer has a great balance and a refreshing lightness while still retaining a lot of flavor.

From XXXII. In Teku glass. After dinner. Body, bittermess and fruityness at perfect levels, in both mouth and nose. What envy give me those yankies that can have easy access to it!

Stumbled on this in a dive/hipster bar in San Diego while traveling. Drank with some fish tacos. I knew it had to be hyper-local, but am a bit stunned it only has one other rating on here!
In any case, this is a great beer. The mosaic pale/ipa has become a popular sub-style these days and I'm a big fan of mosaic hops with all their citrusy goodness. These beers can go too far, though, becoming like IPA soda in their fruitiness. This beer, however, avoids that entirely. It has all the good of the Mosaic, but it stays within bounds. Smooth, tasty, and refreshing, as a session should be.

Poured a golden yellow, slightly hazy, massive sticky off white head that left tons of lacing. Aromas and flavors of tortilla chip malts, grapefruit and lime-zest, pineapple...pretty much a dreamy mosaic ale. It's not the best mosaic ale I've ever had but it gets the job done nicely. Paired excellently with chips and spicy guacamole.

A: A little hazy; light gold/nearing straw. Copious tight head.
S: Ridiculous amounts of grapefruit. Some pale malt.
T: Goddamn; if I didn't know any better I'd say this was a radler. The mosaic is off-the-charts prominent with grapefruit...and more grapefruit. Very bright and flavorful with a kick of resin thrown in. Crisp and a forever finish.
M: Mid-weight on the palate; feels like a great West Coast IPA but a little lighter (go figure).
O: Super impressed. This is the fourth beer I've had of Karl Strauss and it makes me want more. Extremely well done if you like citrusy sessions.

Call it a pale ale damn it! The smell is great but the taste doesn't follow. It's not bad, don't get me wrong. But the smell is really fruity with mango and litchee and the taste is more on the bubble gum

I am a bit surprised at the high rating this beer has received. It seems to promise a nice bright fruity offering of mosaic hops but it ends up just a so-so pale ale with some non descript bittering and over carbed malty finish. Not all that impressed with this one. It's not a bad beer - don't get me wrong. It's just that I don't taste any of the awesomeness of the mosaic hops. If you really want to taste true mosaic hops, try Fresh Squeezed IPA by Deschutes.

Out of a 12 ounce bottle, on to the beer;

Below the big soapy head lays a yellow orange body with lots of perky bubbles racing to the top. Good head retention on top.The aroma hits you with generous doses of pine, pineapple, and mango with an alcohol percentage around the area of a pale ale. Mosaic Session Ale delivers the hoppiness commonly found in an IPA. I taste orange, pineapple, pine, clean and flavorful in character and it goes down very easy. Simply put, one of the beer world's better kept secrets in this category.

Received as part of a Christmas bundle from a friend in Los Angeles.

Pours a bright, slightly cloudy orange with an almost gauzy head. It smells exactly like fruit snacks, which should be weird but is instead quite inviting. It's toasty, wheaty, and has a thick body of apricot and grapefruit zest - yum! Unlike most other hoppy beers (and it is QUITE hoppy), this stuff doesn't zap the inside of your mouth and is quite refreshing. The name is quite accurate, I would gladly knock back several of these puppies.

Slightly hazy orange color with white head. Fresh hoppy aroma with citrus fruits. Taste is also nice and fruity with a bit of dankness but mostly fresh and fruity. Body is crisp and slightly mineral. For a session IPA it's quite tasty.

Golden hued with somewhat murky quality that doesn't let much light through. A half inch of off white rests on top. The aroma is amazing mosaic floral hops. I taste a blend of the mosaic floral hops and tropical hops that are reminiscent of overripe pineapple. The mouth is slightly stick and chewy.

First, 5.5% is a session ale now, eh? Hmmm. Also, no bottle dates? C'mon, Karl! This one tasted a touch dated, some honeyed malt coming through, not super unpleasant or anything but not adding to the beer either. Nose hints at something good, some light pineapple goodness. Body is a bit thin/hollow, especially for the ABV. I dunno. Heard good stuff about this, and I feel like lurking beneath the surface there's something going on (there's the faintest hint of an interesting herbal/savory malt finish), but this particular bottle, whether from age or whatever, just never quite got the motor revving.

This is a really good session ipa that is stellar showcasing the hop. Lots of citrus grapefruit comes thru. Body is fuller than most session ipas and at 5.5%, it isn't simply hop water. By far the best I've had from Karl Strauss and top 5 in session category, and probably the best

Drinking this one from a 22oz. bottle. Pours a thick tight head and a bright hue similar to Budweiser. Lots of grapefruit smell but there's something in the aftertaste (kind of a cardboard flavor) that keeps me from wanting to take another sip. This beer is not for me.

Wow do I love this one!

L: pours a light golden color with a 1 finger head and reasonable lacing.

T: grapefruit comes across very strong without any sweetness. It reminded me a lot of easy jack, except that its grapefruit flavor came across in a really interesting way I can't seem to describe.

F: feels light and refreshing like a session ale should.

O: I wish Karl Strauss was more widely distributed. I no longer live in California, and this one just isn't available to me anymore which is a shame because I really like it!

(2) 12 oz. bottles from Vons poured into a 16 oz. Ballast Point tulip glass.

A: Golden colored with a mostly clear/slightly hazy appearance. Well distributed steady stream of tiny bubbles emanating from the bottom of the glass reminiscent of Champagne.

S: Juicy Grapefruit aroma comes through as soon as the top is opened and intensifies as it is poured into a glass.

T: Hops taste is a Tropical blast of Mango and Guava with and Earth and Water Finish.

M: Mouthfeel is Clean and Refreshing.

O: Mosaic is the star here and it really shines in this Session IPA definitely one of the best beers ever brewed by Karl Strauss and one of my favorite beers from San Diego. If you like this beer you should try the Mosaic DIPA from Saint Archer.
