Notes / Commercial Description:
Tower 10 IPA boasts hops from beginning to end, and everywhere in between. We fill the brew kettle to the brim with assertive Chinook hops, giving the beer its intense grapefruit and pine flavors that linger through its dry finish. After fermentation, we dry hop with a blend of Cascade and Centennial hops for a floral citrus aroma. A touch of lightly kilned caramel malts make Tower 10 a well balanced, full flavored IPA.

Mission Beach, the late 1980s. Amid a sea of neon bikinis, Tower 10 marked the spot where two college grads and a 75 year-old master brewer drew up plans for the first local craft brewery in San Diego since Prohibition. Named in honor of our first good idea, Tower 10 IPA is brewed to inspire the next one.

Growler into a pint glass, the Tower 10 pours a clear amberish golden. Carbonation is a bit light but one never knows with a growler really. Does develop a cap and drop off some scattered lacing. Offers nice clarity.

Touch of subtle caramel on the nose along with a nice hop presence. Lightly piney and with some background citrus. Not too earthy and more like a thin tangerine at times and a bit spicy through the foam when first poured.

Favor is a bit thin relative to the aroma with pale malts and just a hint of spice on the back. Offers a decent carbonation yet there is a lack of supportive bitterness on the close. Offers a nice hoppy aroma initially, getting subdued with time. Touch of citric bitterness on the close is brief and lacks any malt depth. Average to perhaps a slightly thin feel. A smooth and hoppy pale ale for my palette, well done yet cautious....But then this is a beer for the masses, and not for the die hard IPA seeker..

Consumed 6/9
Poured in to a pint glass

A: This beer pours a hazy, copper color with a two finger of off white creamy, rocky head. Head recedes slowly leaving big clumps of lacing behind.

S: Nose pretty simple big piney hops and an equally big caramel malt.

T: Taste is big piney hops at the forefront before moving quickly in to a large caramel malt presence with some minor bready, biscuity notes. Finish is an over abundance of floral hops that really hang on the tongue.

M: Medium body, medium carbonation, oily on the tongue.

D: Goes down ok, mildly filling, mild kick, this is an alright IPA but could have been better blended and I would opt for others of the style.

A - Pours a traditional slightly hazy orange color with some golden hints. There is a nice 0.5 inch head that is frothy and dense with some nice off-qhite cream color.

S - Slight citrus notes with some malt grain backbone. There is some slight tropical notes to the nose as well. Mild nose but with good flavors. Quite bready notes in the nose. It seems more like a APA.

T & M - Taste starts off with some toasty and bready grain notes. Good malt sweetness present with some nice slight grassy hop notes. There is also some slight tropical notes with some mango and some citrus dryness. The taste is more towards an APA than an IPA. Or it could be more of drinkable/accessible American IPA. Still has some good crafted flavors.

O - Overall t is a good drinkable beer. Refreshing that could be drank from the bottle if needed. A flavorful lawn mower beer.

Fresh bottle waiting for my flight at John Wayne Airport. Around 3 weeks old.

Classic dry and crisp west coast ipa. Piney, resinous hops with good amount of grapefruit and orange flavor. A bit of lime in there too. Great balance of malt to hops. Nothing unique. We' ve all had this beer before, but this one does it pretty well for a fresh specimen.

Poured from 22oz bottle.

A- Pours a semi-hazy golden copper color. One finger white head shows alright retention. Nice thick sheety lacing as I drank this one down.

S- Simple enough...big caramel malts dominate a light piney hops. I think this one might be a little on the old side. This was just from the aroma being more malt forward of course.

T- Piney hops kick out in front (nice surprise). This dies into a malty caramel biscuit middle which lingers long into the ending. Floral notes from hops just fade out on the ending with the malts coming out on top.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation was good for the style. Piney hops left on the palate with a caramel bready malt long into the aftertaste with light alcohol notes. Flavors were a little stale and bland at best. Alcohol dryed the palate with each sip.

D- This was a interesting IPA. Interesting because it didn't taste old but at the same time it did. Maybe this beer wasn't the first one to try from this brewery.

Another gift from friends (thanks!). Poured from a 22oz bomber into my Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

Slightly orange-tinted amber body, clear but not brilliant topped by a healthy finger of soapy ivory foam. Ropy crenellations of lace circle the glasss. Good retention.

Tangerine juice, orange zest, and pine in the nose - faint peppercorn and guava as well. Gentle but nice.

Potent hoppiness on the palate - chock full of citrus with some herbal flavors and rosewater as well. Strong but not aggressive bitterness leading into a faintly spicy, earthy finish with a touch of pine. Faint perfume notes as the beer warms take away some of the crispness, but it's clean over all.

Medium-bodied, well carbonated, brisk yet creamy. More warming than the ABV would suggest - though this impression may come from the hops themselves.

A decent example of the style, but it can't hold a candle to its superlative San Diego peers.

Looks: like new pennies. The beer is a beautiful shade of clear copper. A frothy head of grayish-white about half a finger recedes to a thick, foamy layer that never really leaves and deposits large walls of spattered lace as I drink.

Smells: like bright citrusy orange, strawberry, pineapple and grass, along with some light honey sweetness.

Tastes: maltier and toastier than the nose would suggest. I'd almost classify this as a red or hoppy amber with these flavors. Toast, bakery bread and a light nuttiness all show themselves. The hops are an afterthought, offering a slight pop of pithy orange and grapefruit. Acrid bitterness tickles the back sides of the tongue.

Feels: medium-light in body with a muted carbonation. Just a bit watery and runny.

Drinks: like exceeded expectations. I hadn't banked on much performance out of this one, but was pleasantly surprised. A nice, solid IPA that paired very well with fish tacos.

Tap @ downtown location. Poured clear copper with a short white head. Minimal lacing. Light, grassy aroma with piney hops, white pepper, and citrus. Watery mouthfeel. Refreshing taste, mostly grapefruit and a light bitter resiny taste. Some mineral and bread flavors, dry finish. Came across as an IPA-lite.

Pours a chill-hazed medium orange with an off white head that melted quickly to just a thin covering with a bit of lace on the side. (possible use of a rinse aid when washing this glass).

Nose is a nice, bright citrus on the orange and tangerine side with some malt sweetness. Clean and refreshing.

Mouthfeel is creamy with lots of tiny carbonation pretty typical for the style when brewed right. I've been drinking mostly Kolsch and Milds this summer so the carbonation was a bit of a surprise but it is where it should be for an IPA.

The mildly sweet malts are balanced very nicely by the hop additons. Again, a little orange, a little tangerine, and now grapefruit.

A quickly drying aftertaste of bitter grapefruit peel follows the swallow and you begin to feel the heat of the alcohol about 1/3 of the way through a glass.

In all, a wonderful IPA to get your feet (and tongue) wet with and just perfect for me after a long summer of more traditional summer type beers.

Poured from a bottle; into a tumbler.
Appearance - gold, cloudy; thin, foamy head that leaves decent lacing.
Smell - pineapple and mango, faint juicy fruit.
Taste - not bad, but falls short of the nose, lacking with a strong pineapple and mango presence. A bit too boozy after it sits.
Feel - this goes from an enjoyable, drinkable IPA, to a weird after taste, funky IPA.
Overall - I'm in and out on this one...which means I'm out. Too funky when it's all said and done.
