Queen of tarts?!? More like Queen of Farts!!! Actually had twice. Once really good, once terrible. Not the same beer, different flavoring. The first was a well balanced, nice pumpkin sour, that highlighted the sour, not the pumpkin. The second was a sickly sweet cran/apple mess that was sour enough to be interesting, but not good enough to be memorable. I really didn't enjoy it, like I did the first time and don't believe they were the same thing. Never been a fan of KS beers, but their buildings are beautiful. I hope their beers can catch up some day.

Draft into snifter at KnB Wine Cellar’s in San Diego, Calif., on July 18, 2012. Dark mahogany color, a bit like prune juice. Less than a finger of head when I got it. Tan lacing. Quickly dissipated and poor retention.

Smelled Coca-Cola, Bottle Caps (the candy), Captain Morgan & Coke, bourbon, liquor, plum, dark fruits, cherry, Diet Cherry Coke.

Tasted a lot different (and better) than the smell. Got cranberry, blackberry, liquor, a mix of Captain & Coke and bourbon.

Medium body. Slick texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish.

Very good beer, not what I was expecting at all.

On tap for Churchill's Renaissance at Churchill's Pub & Grille in San Marcos, CA.

Pours a slightly murky crimson brown with a tan head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. No real lacing to speak of. Smell is of tart cranberry and apple aromas with some funky and woody notes as well. Taste is somewhat woody up front with tart and slightly funky cranberry and apple flavors on the finish. This beer really isn’t too sour however. There is a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but nothing too great.

On tap at Churchill's. Snifter. Imperial stout aged in oak barrels for 2 years with sour cherries added.

A: Very dark brown with a reddish tinge and an inch of beige froth.

S: Tart dark cherries with a pronounced lactic presence. Smells like tart cherry pie. Lower moderate sweetness. Light vinegar presence.

T: Cherry pie flavor with a light tartness and a light lactic sourness. The fruit is vibrant and expressive. Lightly acetic with a pleasant vinegar presence. Alcohol is well hidden.

M: Upper full body with upper medium carbonation. Sticky smooth mouthfeel.

Overall: Another good beer from Karl Strauss. This brewery is stepping up their game.
