Appearance – This poured a thick, bright but not overly radiant orange in color with some good carbonation and a big, beautiful puffy white head that showed great retention.

Smell – The hops come roaring loudly at the nose. There is a lot of complexity here owing to the wide variety of hops used, a real “kitchen sink” hopping. There are big PacNW piney hops in here along with some strong citrus, grapefruit, and lighter fruits.

Taste – The many hops are surprisingly balanced at the taste. GA did a great job of managing the insane complexity of this ale. The pine is there but not overriding, the grapefruit and orange peel stand out, and there’s even a hint of sweetness like watermelon or melon.

Mouthfeel – This is nearly full-bodied with a good amount of dryness up front but nothing that will scare away the SNPA crowd. It is incredibly smooth considering the hop load in the recipe.

Drinkability – As drinkable as a DIPA can be, GA hit the nail on the head here. It lived up to its name but isn’t just a mishmash of random hops. This was carefully planned and perfectly executed. My first taste of Grand Armory – hats off!

12 ounce can into tulip glass; no can dating, but is a recent release. Pours slightly hazy deep golden amber color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and rocky off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, citrus peel/rind, pepper, pine, honey, toasted bread, light caramel, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of huge grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, citrus peel/rind, pepper, pine, honey, toasted bread, light caramel, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, citrus peel/rind, pepper, pine, honey, toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance; and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/sticky, and fairly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Mildly increasing warmth of 10% after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic DIPA! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and bready malt flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV; with the modestly bitter/drying finish, never aggressive. Outstanding Mosaic, Citra, Copper, Centennial, Cascade, Columbus, Amarillo, and Zythos hop showcase. Extremely juicy, dank, and earthy balanced hop complexity; nice sized bready malt backbone, but not overly sweet/heavy for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering, and amazing style example for the ABV.

I am a big fan of this style so I was excited to find a DIPA on tap last night at the brewery. Pours a very similar hazy golden, amber into a pint glass. Nice frothy, 2 inch head. Looks very similar to Bell's Hopslam. Smell is slightly subtle citrusy and piney. I think the tap list board had this one listed at 100 plus IBU's. Lots of hops, but nicely balanced by the sweet malt backbone. A very well done DIPA, that doesn't rely on variants like so many other breweries. Well done guys!!
