This organic dark lager from Neumarkt, Germany is a brilliant example of the dunkel style. It pours a crystal-clear dark chestnut body at around 22 SRM, and offers up a frothy head of tan foam. The head retention is good, and it leaves large spots of lace about the glass.

The aroma suggests toasty, almost roasted malts. It's sweetish, bready, and a bit caramelish. Floral and softly grassy hops round out the nose.

In the mouth it's medium-light bodied with a starting gravity of 12.5 P, and just delicately tingly on the tongue with a very-fine bubbled moderate carbonation that leaves it smooth and subtly creamy.

The dark malts give a quick hint of sweetness up front, caramelish and doughy, before it dries across the middle as the bitterness rises. It then becomes toasty, and it even has a suggestion of roasty smokiness. Floral, grassy, herbal, and even a bit spicy, the hop flavors appear just before the swallow and then fade in a short lived finish that leaves only a thin coating of bittered malt sticking to the tongue and teeth. Remarkably well-balanced and rounded.

Complex enough to keep it interesting beyond one serving, it's also quite easy to drink as it's not overdone with flavor, and its smooth carbonation and body don't fill you up. Certainly worth trying!

Pours a clear dark-brown color, with a small top off white head that disolves rapidly. Aroma is off slight roasted malts, caramel, nuts and some dried dark fruits. Flavour is off strong roasted malts, some hints off coffee and caramel with some sweetness upfront. Has a slight bitter finish with malts strong in the back. Good length in the aftetaste but a little watery in the flavour. Medium carbonated with a medium body. Smooth and clean mouthfeel. All in all is a good and enjoyable dunkel lager

The colour is dark brown, the liquid is clear. The three finger head is beige and compact: it sinks slowly down to a thick lid leaving no lacing on the glass.

The clean smell is nutty and roasted with some hay and crayon. Metal and minerals in the background.

The taste is clean and semi-sweet with growing roasted notes: Cashew nuts, caramel and grilled meat. It tastes a bit like a dry version of Coca-Cola. Medium body. The aftertaste got growing hay-like hops, clean bitterness and malty brown flavours of caramel and a hint of cocoa. The long aftertaste is rather sweet with chocolate and a slight metallic bitterness.

The carbonation is mild, more like an ale than a lager. The many bubbles are mid-sized, smooth and long-lived. The liquid is medium smooth.

I didn’t like the slight metallic taste. Not a bad Dunkel.

500 ml bottle w/march 17 bb date from local Getränkemarkt in weizen glass; very mild aroma--mostly a little bit of molasses and some light dry wheat husk; taste is very watery with mild raisin and mild alcohol and a tiny bit of toffee; feel is pretty balanced with a medium body and moderate carb with very little cloy/syrupiness; really a forgettable beer imo with very little aroma or taste but good appearance and above average feel

A stunning in-house dark malt steals the show. Robust sour breast malt, dark wheat, slightly sweet. Amazing fresh and clean feel. Very classic Dunkle all around. Easy to drink and very refreshing even as a dark malt. Light and soft feel makes the 4.8% and easy.

I've only had 2 Dunkels before this little bottle came my way.
The first was an amazing black walnut dunkel, then a more commercial offering of a Dunkel that was awful. This one was much like the first. Nutty, a little weak coffee like but a nice over all balancing act of hops and maltiness.
Nice Lager taste under a dark flavor like that?,..... , I'm going back for another!

Hazy dark brown with two fingers of off white head.
Smell is brown bread, plums, and some molasses.
Taste is similar to the smell but less so.
Mouthfeel is low carbonation very soft on the tongue. Finish is slightly sweet. Light body.
Overall a tasty sipper without much zing. I think it might be old. The code on the back label is: 11:14..C13.

Pours a clear dark copper with thin off-white head. Aroma is so much malt and nuttiness - lovely. Flavor is slightly thin, but does resemble the aroma, just lighter. If this was more full-bodied it would be much better. Still very tasty.
