The Ratskeller is one of my favorite places in Muenchen. I've been going here for a brew and a meal since I was 16, and its really quite a unique place.

The atmosphere is great, it is a neat place located in the basement (celler) of the Rathaus (city hall). Always liveley with excellent food. The ceilings, woodwork, etc., make it a fun place to eat. Unlike many german restaurants or beerhalls, the tables are small and intimate; its a nice romantic place to esentially get away from it all, while still being right in the middle of town on the Marienplatz.

The beer selection is limited by some standards, but no more so than most other German bars/restaurants. Maybe half a dozen or 10 beers. Usually various brews from Loewenbrau are available, which you really can't go wrong with.

The price for food is high, but well worth it. The portions are large and absolutely delicious

I just saw a review here for this place and remembered it well on my last trip to Munich. We ate breakfast here one day and the place was great. Typical Older Bavarian type of restaurant with great food and a great atmosphere. We enjoyed a buffet here around 10:30 in the morning and I remember being somewhat surprised at seeing so many people drinking beer that early. But thae again, that's Munich for ya! I recommend this place also.

This is one of our favorite places to get away from it all in Munich...why? Well, it's just plain romantic, that's why. After a long day of running around, doing the bier hall thing, sometimes you want to relax at a table for two, in a cozy setting with a candle on the table, and order up a fine Lowenbrau beer.

The Ratskeller is located right on the Marianplatz, so it's very easy to find. It tends to be our last spot for the evening, so I've never been here during the day, or had dinner here. The place is large, and very nice traditional German style (ie dark wood). We always sit in the weinstuebe part, as it's the cozyiest part of the place. Intimate little tables, low light. Then we get the drink menu and check out the beers...fresh Lowenbrau in basically every style. We've had the hefeweizen, the schwarz, and the pilsner, and never been disapointed.

I would recommend this place for couples who are interested in enjoying good beer in more quiet, relaxed, and intimate setting. Stay in the weinstuebe part, and you will avoid the hustle and bustle of a traditional German bier hall.
