Hopcat has quickly cemented itself as one of my go-to places for beer, and somewhere I can reasonably expect to enjoy a meal as I imbibe. Ever had Old Rasputin as a nitro tap? They might still have it!

Newish outpost of the Michigan based bar chain.
Large space, graffiti murals on either side make for an interesting contrast, visually loud. The noise level was up there too, had to yell across the table a few times.

Selection is where it's at, 140 taps is pretty ridiculous. There's 30 dedicated local taps, and the rest are organized by style, for better or worse. The highlights for me were the coffee variants of Big Bad Baptist, and a few Shorts beers, including an exclusive DIPA made for HopCat.

Food wise, it's mostly burgers and sandwiches. Had a reuben which is pretty hard to screw up. The corned beef was thin sliced rubbery deli meat, the sandwich was maybe an inch thick including the bread. For $12, not a great value. The fries were pretty good.

Service was good, our waitress was able to handle our group of 12 and split checks easily.
Overall i'd return if there was something on tap to try, but would skip the food next time.

The fries are crazy good. The beer selection is a little too focused on local (which the old fashion a few blocks away has a better selection), and doesn't have too many hard to find beers. However, with 100+ taps you can find something to love.

Attended the grand opening. The inside reminds me of BW's but with a better bar, food, and much better beer selection. Plenty of TV's for watching games. 2 floors makes it nice to escape the 1st level if it is busy. Even during the grand opening the 2nd floor was pretty relaxed. Waitstaff have always been friendly, knowledgeable, and relatively quick. The food is pretty solid and the menu offers a wide variety of American food. Half price burgers for happy hour is a good deal and the burgers are tasty. Crack fries are over rated; not bad but I couldn't finish a order on my own. Also, they overpower any beer you're drinking.
To the important part: the beer. 100 rotating taps including 30 local taps at all times. Occasionally a rare tap or 2 will show up but usually nothing over the top. With that said, it is still a great selection. Prices are moderate to high depending upon the beer. They keep an up-to-date beer menu with prices on their website.

I planned to checkout the Hop Cat when I finally got around to visiting Grand Rapids. Several beers and years later, I still hadn't made it anywhere near Grand Rapids, so it was a pleasant surprise to see a Hop Cat open in Madison. I visited recently for lunch, on my way home from the New Glarus R&D release. The vibe and overall atmosphere were just fine. It wasn't too crowded, so the server had extra time to be more attentive. She was knowledgeable of both the food and tap list. There were over 120 beers on tap, so there's definitely something for every beer enthusiast to enjoy. The food was very good. The crack fries lived up to the hype. I had the fam with me, and despite the lack of a kids menu, they were quite accommodating. Everyone in our large booth was very satisfied with the entire experience. I will definitely be back again. Yippee ki yay Mr. Falcon!
