Glad I am getting a chance to try the original recipe.

The obvious difference is that the original is filtered and thus a pretty clear beer. Orange hued gold. A nice layer of white head with good retention and lace. Active carbonation in the glass.

Flavor profile: This beer reminds me a ton of the current hefe. A lot of bananas, cloves, yeast, wheat, and some bubblegum.

Mouthfeel: Here is where I notice the biggest difference. The current is creamier and this seems to be a bit more dry. Light to medium bodied. Good amount of carbonation.

Overall, a solid wheat beer that is easy to drink. This one seems to be a bit lighter and easier to drink than the current version, but not as dominate in the flavors.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a hefeweizen glass.

Big hefe pour into my glass shows a lovely, clear golden beer with a nice foamy head that slowly compacts and leaves some nice lacing all down the glass.

Nice aroma, lots of banana and spice and a touch of underlying hops.

The taste is quite nice. Banana and clove and a bit of hop bitterness at the end.

Mouthfeel is a little thin.

Overall, a very good beer but a bit harsher and less refined than the 2014 version. Still, very tasty!

Appearance: Clear gold, good head.

Smell: Nice banana aroma.

Taste: Mildly sweet with a little banana and touch of lemon. Easy drinker.

Overall: Beer #1 in the Schell Weizen mixer. The 1984 is pretty tasty but not as intensely flavorful as the 2014 weiss. Could be because of the filtering/style. Touches the usual hefe bases but not as strong. Interesting to try.

Thanks to Matt for the bottle line-up, but mostly for the proper glassware.

Poured this into a August Schell hex-base weisse glass. Clear, golden color, with a huge white head that filled the top of the glass, appropriately. Aroma of banana and clove, yucky wheat malts. In the taste, rotten banana, white bread, bubblegum, clovy spice. Just off-putting overall...I didn't care for it. Medium body, mouthfeel was slick and grainy. I'm not a huge fan of the style, but I've definitely had better than this.

12oz bottle out of the sampler

Smells like those old root beer cap candies. Seriously, exactly like that. Harsh, gritty feel... wheat gives way to cream, lemon, confectioners sugar. Tart, maybe a little pepper.

Unremarkable, besides the nostalgia inducing smell.

Poured into a reidel wheat beer glass.
Soft phenols (a little spiciness with some clove, and banana. Also not crystal clear. Clean but some cloudiness. Full white head.
Subdued aroma but nice.
Nice prickliness from the bubbles yet still really quite soft. Dries out quite nicely too for a long finish. A tad on the thinner side after the carbonation - certainly makes it a quick drink if hot and thirsty enough.
Cleaner flavor than typical hefe's yet still certainly flavors for style. Wheat flavor is milder as are the yeast notes, but it's still a hefe. Others have noted there might be some corn in here. I can't quite tell (and I"ll probably kill it before it warms up enough to tell with more certainty).
Certainly not as good as the more contemporary recipe, but still a nice drink.
