Style: Baltic Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.90%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
In a nod to our 19th century brewing traditions, this limited edition beer was barrel-aged and naturally cooled in our historic ice caves located deep below our 1860s brewery. Before the days of refrigeration, our caves were used to keep the beer cool during the lagering process and today they still can serve that same purpose! Number 4 in the series, this batch was aged in bourbon barrels from Four Roses distillery and has hints of sweet caramel, oak, and vanilla.

Big tan head that eventually settles. Dark brown black color.

Big anise/black licorice and molasses flavor. Dark fruits like plums and red apple skins. Caramel, cocoa, and toffee. Very malty. Medium to full bodied for a lager. Bourbon and oak with a hint of vanilla. A bit of roasted malts.

Definitely another winner in the series. Extremely drinkable for the abv.

Got in a trade with The-Adjunct-Hippie. 12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 3/23/2018. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger fairly dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, vanilla, toffee, brown sugar, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, nuts, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of molasses, licorice, smoke, leather, raisin, plum, fig, herbal, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, bourbon barrel, and light fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, vanilla, toffee, brown sugar, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, nuts, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of molasses, licorice, smoke, leather, raisin, plum, fig, herbal, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Light herbal/roast/char bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, vanilla, toffee, brown sugar, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, nuts, dark/brown bread, light molasses/dark fruit, herbal, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, bourbon barrel, and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with an awesome roasted bitter/sweet and bourbon/oak spiciness balance; with zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky/tannic mouthfeel that is great. Mildly increasing warmth of 10.9%, with zero barrel booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic Baltic porter! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, bourbon barrel, and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV. Very clean lagering, not overly fruity. Very rich and complex malts, with awesome barrel integration/balance. Not overly roasty, bitter, or drying. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

12 oz. bottle. Black and a little transparent at the edges. Smells of lots of bourbon. Strong corn bourbon aroma. Oak. Vanilla. Sweet chocolate malt. Tastes of bourbon up front also. Some sweet chocolate behind it. Sweetness lingers. Oak and bourbon in the finish. Medium heavy and pretty sweet. Good, but just about as sweet as I can handle, maybe just beyond that.

Sent to me from a good dude in Iowa.
After checking out projected ABV, I ignored my lager glass and opted for my snifter as I see this was barrel aged as well.
The appearance was a nice looking for dark brown color in the pour and looked closer to black when held up to the light in the glass. Just a cap of a little white foamy head that slid off immediately.
The aroma preached of a fine blend of rich sweet milk chocolate, dark chocolate, light vanilla, woody/barrel spice, then the woody/barrel sweetness, sly earthiness, dark fruits and ended with some bourbon sweetness.
The flavor took the sweetness meshing from the bourbon and milk chocolate and moved into the dark chocolate bitterness (which was exceptionally light). Barrel spices started to overtake as it continued to warm. I went looking for the "lager yeastiness" but seemed to have never found it, I'm not disappointed, but I'm wondering if the bourbon barrel may have hidden it. Light bourbon to rich milk chocolate and vanilla aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality behind it. Bourbon character showing some strength but not becoming distracting. It's a nice "mobile to smooth" heat that I liked. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt close as projected by the brewer.
Overall, a very nice Baltic Porter that I may have liked a bit more for me, but I was hoping for some of that "lager yeast" to show up. Still, it's quite good and would recommend.

Love this beer. I have gone through a case of it and will finally five it a score. Dark brown color with a finger of head. Some lacing is left behind. Aroma of bourbon, oak, chocolate malt, and some earthy and herbal hops. Nice flavor balance of sweet malt and barrel character. Notes of bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, char, and some licorice. Very slight hint of boozy heat. Full bodied and nicely carbonated.

The beer had a strong smell of bourbon and was a bit sweet for my tastes.

Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, licorice. Tall tan head, receding fairly quickly to a spotty cap and ring, leaving sticky, stringy lacing. Completely black color reveals itself to be a deep ruby with a back-light. No visible carbonation. Body is smooth. Rich flavors on a substantial malt body. Flavors as in the aroma: bourbon, vanilla, licorice, with hints of chocolate. Alcohol is noticeable, but even so, it goes down very easily. Very well done. Needs to be consumed as a slow sipping beer, but as pleasant and smooth as this is, this takes discipline.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter.Pours a deep brown/black with a 2 finger tan head. Head doesn't last long and forms a thin ring around the glass with some lacing around the glass. Soft and sweet whiskey smell, with oak, vanilla and some chocolate, great aroma The taste is a nice vanilla and bourbon flavor. I get oak and some bitter chocolate with sweet and roasted malt. Mouthfeel is medium for a porter, but it is creamy and rich. Carbonation is soft and spot on. A delicious and tasty Baltic Porter with good amount of bourbon and vanilla. Really glad I picked one up!

Great looking beer with two fingers of creamy tan/khaki colored head. The beer itself is a dark-very dark brown.
The smell is of bourbon, vanilla, oak and barrel are very present.
The taste is very much the same. A nice bourbon with sweetness. Caramel, vanilla. Barrel is balanced but with a good presence.
Feeling is dry, leaves almost as quickly as it enters while the taste stays.
Overall, I didn't know what to expect from this but it ended up being a treat.

Dark chocolate pour with a creamy, frothy head of 1/2 finger.

Rich aromas of molasses, dark chocolate, bourbon, caramel, leather, and hints of sarsaparilla. Smells like a damn top shelf barrel aged stout.

Flavor starts out with coffee bean, ash, earth, and bitter chocolate - this makes up 90% of the flavor. The end brings in some calm sarsaparilla, hints of molasses and vanilla, and a decadent finish of smooth dark chocolate. Still the ash remains. The beer is simply incredible, but the only personal problem I have is that I'm not a fan of Baltic Porters. Especially ashy ones. Still, the barrel flavors are impressive even if the Baltic flavors get in the way a bit.

Feel is light-plus to start, and brings in some creaminess, leading to a carbonated and roasty finish.

Overall, Schell makes outstanding barrel aged beers. I wish this year's cave aged would have been a Doppelbock like last year, which made my eyes pop out of my head. I'll look forward to next year's...maybe it will be a stout? I guess we will see!

I'm a little surprised this is a Baltic Porter and that it's as big as listed. As it doesn't taste or drink that big.
There is a great vanilla and bourbon to both the aroma and flavor. A smooth clean malt flavor is the base and solid background. Bits of coffee and toffee and maybe in a little chocolate and licorice in the taste.
Really smooth with a great clean lager feel. Hints of dryness on the finish but short lived with the sweetness of the drink cutting the dryness short.
Nice dark color with solid reds in the dark browns. Rather short lived head.
This is dangerous as it drinks quite easily for it's size. I like it a lot.
