Style: Hefeweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.75%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
Also known as Schell's 2014 Weiss

First brewed in 1984, Schell’s Hefeweizen is made with a blend of wheat malt and barley malts. We use an authentic wheat beer yeast culture, which gives the beer a fruity ale character dominated by a citrus-like tartness. Refreshingly light character with a higher than normal carbonation level. Straw-colored and cloudy from the unfiltered yeast left in suspension. Notes of banana and clove with a slight bready malt flavor.

Schell's Hefeweizen, 4.75%. Pours medium viscosity and hazy gold, with a two finger white head. Nose is yeasty/bready, taste follows, with the usual bananas and cloves. Decent carbonation so excellent mouthfeel. Overall Excellent - nowhere as good as Weihenstephaner, but better than others I've had.

I poured this from a bottle into a clear teardrop glass. It pours a very light yellow with a one finger white head. It almost tastes like a saison, sweet but barely. I taste the hint of banana. I'd buy it again.

Clear straw colour, with aromas of fruity banana weiss yeasts and wheat; nice, light and crisp to the nose. A light and crisp heffeweizen taste. Notes of clove and banana yeasts present, slightly fruity and sweet but refreshing and lighter-bodied overall. Very sessional and flavourful.

Bottle dated 072615 at 42 degrees into shaker
Aroma of yeast phenolics
Head average (three cm, aggressive pour), white, frothy, diminishing to an irregular two to three mm ring and layer
Lacing – none
Body light yellow, hazy
Flavor, definite yeast phenolics, somewhat harsh and unpleasant, lacking the smoothness of a good hefeweizen, unlike any hefe I’ve ever had; no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate medium, creamy, lively carbonation

Appearance 4, Aroma 3.5, Flavor 2, Palate 4, Overall 3.5

Bottle into Pilsener glass. A very pale orangish-gold, heavily carbonated, a bit hazy. 2 inch slightly off-white head from a moderate pour. Head hardly fades at all over the first few minutes, and then fades very slowly. Sweet aroma. Slight fruit scents, perhaps banana (but I'm not too good at sorting out 15 different fruit odors in a beer... ). Nice initial taste, banana again, not much bitterness at all initially. Not too thin, and the carbonation contributes to a good feel. A bit of hops bittering in the middle and into the aftertaste, but the predominate taste is from the malts and yeasts, it seems to me, fruity banana. Just a bit too sweet to be considered crisp. This is a refreshing beer, great for just coming in from doing yard work (like for me, now). I'm not familiar with how the style is "supposed" to taste, so I can't comment on how faithful it is to the German style; but it is very good.

Look: Cloudy light gold-peach with very little head
Smell: sweet yet sharp clove and banana
Taste: sweet, mellow banana and spices
Feel: light and effervescent

Overall: A pleasing, mellow and refreshing hefe with a tendency towards a tasteful sweetness and a clean finish
