22 oz. Bomber

Pours a pretty nice brown color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy/foamy white head, which leaves some sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, with some chocolate/toffee, vanilla. The taste is malty, with some chocolate/toffee, vanilla, Medium body. Overall, a pretty tasty brew.

Aroma has smoke, dark chocolate, juniper, and sweetness. Assertive smokiness comes through in the taste, with a rich malt backdrop and a hint of chocolate.

2016 Vintage
Best by 2021

Look: Pours black with a quickly dissipating dark tan head.

Smell: Roasted malts combined with smokiness.

Taste: Following the nose, big roasted malt flavor, ever-present but not overpowering smokiness, sweet molasses and hints of chocolate.

Feel: Thick and slightly sticky, medium carbonation.

Overall: This is an awesome Porter. The smokiness is pronounced but not overwhelming. The flavors complement each other wonderfully. Very happy to have picked this one up, great tribute to smoke jumpers!

On tap at Swillburger/The Playhouse in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a fairly dark black, with a small white head, and a good amount of lacing.

Smells like sweet and earthy smoke, chocolate syrupy, roasted malt, and a hint of hops.

This is pretty great- Left Hand really knows their way around dark beers. The smokiness is slightly sweet, and pretty earthy, without some of that ashiness or plasticky phenols from smoked beers. There's chocolate, molasses, lightly roasted malt, and just a hint of hops. It's sweet without being overly so.

This is medium bodied, fairly creamy, with a good level of carbonation.

I liked this one a lot more than I expected to. It's really good and quite easy to drink.

2016 vintage. Poured into tulip glass. It pours jet black with dark walnut hues, and a full finger of creamy, khaki-colored head and extensive lacing with excellent retention. It smells of wood smoke, char, tobacco, burnt coffee, roasted malt, and a whiff of caramel. The smoke and char dominates the taste, along with burnt coffee grounds, baker's chocolate, and a hint of hops at the finish. There is also a slight taste of dark fruit that provides a note of sweetness. The taste becomes more complex and interesting as the glass warms. For a porter, it has a thick, creamy mouth feel, with mild carbonation, and its 8.8% ABV gives it nice substance without being overly boozy. Overall, this is a thoroughly enjoyable American Porter. The smoke is evident but it doesn't overwhelm the other flavors. I'll seek out Smoke Jumper again!

Presentation: 22 oz bottle stamped "Vintage 2016 Best by 11/14/21" poured into a pint glass.

Look: Solid black coloration with a one finger dark tan head. Good head retention.

Smell: Malts, hops, and some light smoke.

Taste: Dark chocolate, bitter coffee and a trail of smoke finish with some lingering alcohol.

Feel: Thick body, low carbonation and warming alcohol.

Overall: A very good imperial porter. Smoke seems to disappear as the beer warms.

Great for one try but very smoky in the flavor > aroma. Not quite ashy but close. A little more sweetness would help this beer, maybe some milk chocolate tones.

From the 650 ml 2016 vintage bottle with a best by date of 10/14/21. Sampled on December 12, 2016.

The pour is a deep dark brown to near black color with a ring of red at the bottom of my glass. Foamy tan head.

The aroma has a big smoked dark malt and charcoal character and a sweetness under that. Low to no hop profile on the nose.

Medium to bold but astringent body.

Smoky goodness erupts in the flavor like a bonfire with sweet dark malts, maybe some raisins, and then it ends on a high bitter note that does not linger - but really warms the senses.

A: Pours a near pitch black color with 2 fingers of head that fades down to a thin ring of lace

S: Lots of smoke up front along with some roasted malts and lighter earthy notes

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with a good bit of smokiness and some roast followed by some earthy and very lightly herbal hop notes. Finishes with lingering salty smoke and a touch of sweetness

M: Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation

O: A very nice smoked porter with plenty of camp fire smokiness. Not too much complexity behind the smoke, but it doesn't really need it. Worth checking out if you're into any smoked beers

Poured a black body with one-finger head and a smoky, meaty aroma. Medium-bodied beer that is sticky with hints of sugary sweetness underneath a smoky meatiness. Not a bad smoked ale but that is pretty much all I get.

Aroma – roasted malt, weak smoke
Head small (Maximum < 2 cm, aggressive pour), light brown, frothy/fizzy, quickly diminishing to a three mm ring and partial layer
Lacing - none
Body – dark brown/black, opaque
Flavor – roasted malt, chocolate, very weak smoke, all well blended. No hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl

Not so smoky, which was OK, and a delicious beverage on all counts, not too boozy, very smooth. Enjoyed this with friends, we only talked about Trump, made it hard to enjoy the beer!

Pours a very dark brown, almost black. Very smokey smell, with sweet malts. Very balanced taste, smokey, smooth, toasted malts, molasses, slightly bitter finish, with a the smokiness lingering. Lovely, flavourful, very drinkable porter.

Pretty dark color. Brown head. Low persistence.

Light bouquet, malt and cocoa. Ovaltine. Nice.

Flavors of dark, roasty malt, licorice, Demerara rum. Smoke is definitely present, but not overwhelming, it doesn't get in the way. Its a real beer, not a novelty.

Moderately rich mouthfeel, definitely pushing toward Imperial. Nice carbonation, not too much. 8.8% ABV is masked byt he depth of the beer.

Really well integrated finish. Clean. Cooca. Bitter, but not overly. Complex. Not super long.

-midnight black beer with little head
- very smoky chocolate notes with a sweet start to alcohol end
-light chocolate notes, lots of roasted grains and smokiness with a alcohol end
- thick and warming beer, doesn't over coat though in my opinion
-overall a very smoky beer pleasant but i expected less smoke from a imperial porter but top notch beer none the less

Had this on tap at the Pint Room in Carmel on Left Hand night. Excellent. The color is a deep brown, not mistaken for black which is good for a stout. The flavor is SUPER smoky, with a hint of vanilla in the aftertaste. Like you're in a burning building smoky. Loved it.

BBD 3/24/19. Yes, the stamp says 2019. Pitch black pour with an average head, below average retention and above average lacing. The nose is charred oak like smoke over a rich caramel sweetness with hints of dark fruit and chocolate. As it warms, light alcohol notes are noted and chocolate becomes more prevalent. Almost full bodied with a very rich creamy texture. Below normal carbonation with almost no effervescence in the finish. The World Class flavor profile is intense, yet masterfully balanced between smoke, caramel sweetness and mild bitterness. It is quite complex from the middle to the finish. It begins with a rush of oak like, rather than bacon such as in the Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbiers, smoke with a rough charred nature - just like a Smoke Jumper would encounter - that coats the tongue in an oily onslaught. The sweet caramel background, with hints of vanilla and heavy chocolate notes, melds with it and slowly the bitterness and roast characteristics emerge. The exceptional finish is a blending of all previous flavors and the dark fruit characteristics finally get a chance to emerge against a rich chocolate background. As it warms, the vanilla component becomes quite evident in the finish. As everything fades, a nice residual smokiness sweetly coats the tongue and a low level alcohol burn tickles the back of the throat. Truly a World Class offering from Left Hand and the most flavorful smoked porter I've ever had the privilege to drink.

Exceptional Porter.. ive had a few porters and this one is on the Best of "Left hand List" that ill store in my mind when i roam the shelves at total wine and AJ's.

Never had a smoked porter until i tried this one this passing June 2014.
after having left Hands Black Jack id say this is right up there with it but in terms of difference in taste this is the other side of the porter coin

Holy smokes! Yep, that's what you get with this beer. Tastes like you just pulled it out of the smoker, probably would go great with barbecue. Will have to try that sometime. Very strong smoky flavor, clearly the dominant taste here. Had this in a flight with other dark beers and it was a standout.

Pours black with small tan head.

Smells is loads of smoked bacon and coco.

Wow..this beer isn't shy with the smokiness which I love. Almost like a liquid good. Great hints of coco, coffee, molasses, and tremendous roastiness.

Mouthfeel is full bodied, thick and silky.

Overall this is such a great smoked porter in my opinion..some people might be overwhelmed by the amount of smoke but I love it. One of my favorites.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 3/24/2014. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, wood smoke, toast, molasses, light char, light dark fruits, herbal hops, and roast/smoke earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/smoked malt moderate earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, toast, molasses, wood smoke, light char, light dark fruit, herbal hops, and roast/smokey earthiness. Fair amount of herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, toast, molasses, wood smoke, light char, light dark fruit, herbal hop, and roast/smokey earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice balance, complexity, and robustness of dark/roast/smoked malt and moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth and moderately creamy/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent imperial smoked porter! All around great complexity and balance of dark/roast/smoked malt and moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Super black!! SRM 45+. The head had a nice tinge of brown. This looks like a treat!

Moderate to pushy in the smoke department. Smoked salt, French Roast coffee, cocoa nibs, earthy roast, campfire, bitter oats, black patent char, seawater, and cured charcuterie. Awesome nose. Still reppin' porters, not rauchs. Gets good marks!

Holy smokes! Smoked bacon, campfire, French Roast coffee, charred porter roast, chocolate-bacon bar, black peppercorn, mineral water, and an earthy bitter finish. Truly excellent. Opens up at sixty degrees more than you would believe.

Just bigger than medium, for body. Viscosity is pretty easy, however. Carbonation wants to give it some spice. Just a great feel for an Impy Porter. Booze? Yeah, I didn't think you'd answer to roll call.

Loves me a meaty, smoky imperial porter. Left Hand nailed it. For the ages!

APPEARANCE: This is one of the darker Porters I have seen. No light comes through even when held up to a light bulb. The brownish, off-white head fluffs up to about a finger’s worth of head before slowly receding into a beer-coaster-thick cap. Lacing is spotty up top, but becomes much more full throughout the glass.

SMELL: This beer has a wonderfully, smoky smell. A subtle coffee roastiness provides a backdrop for a very pleasant bacon-like smoked aroma.

TASTE: This is the closest thing to liquid bacon I have ever had. This is one of the few truly savory beers out there with plenty of Umami. Yum. Adding to the savory flavor is a touch of roasty malt and for balance, a hint of semi-sweet dark chocolate rolls over the tongue towards the end of the sip.

MOUTHFEEL: Incredible. Perfect might be a better word, particularly when it comes to balance – the savory flavors are dominant, but the perfect portion of sweetness comes in at just the right moment to create an exceptional give and take. As for body, this is certainly a big beer, but lighter than many other Porters. The carbonation provides a light tickle to go along with a creamy, but cleansing mouthfeel. I think there is only one other beer I’ve given a 5 in mouthfeel, but this if there’s a way to make one 5 stronger than the other this one is.

OVERALL: This is the best smoked beer I am currently aware of. Left Hand does a lot of things very well, but two of those things stand out – dark beers and smoked beers. It turns out, this might the best combination of the two they’ve ever done. For the style, this might be the closest beer to perfection I have ever had.
