Smoked Goosinator Doppelbock...surely one of the quirkiest names in beer. Here we go:

A - Poured into a goblet, it looked like a Belgian dark, with the 2-3 finger head and murky brown. Head stuck around for a while. Looks very nice in the glass.

S - There was no mistaking this one as soon as I popped the cork. Sizzling bacon, chocolate, and outright smoke. Some esters in there I'm struggling to identify, maybe juniper? This reminds me a bit of the way Aventinus smells minus the hefty smoke presence, and that is a very good thing.

T - Well done. Plenty of smokiness and BBQ'd meat in the flavor. Some bitter chocolatey hop rounds it out to a dry finish.

F - Appropriate. Medium-to-full bodied.

D - As always, with beers of this type, you'd better be in the mood for a smoked beer, or else it won't be very drinkable at all. I don't have the visceral reaction to smoked malts some do, but let's be frank, this isn't exactly a thirst-quencher. Expensive, but a good occasional treat. I paired it with a few morsels of stinky, sharp blue cheese, and it went well, as you would expect it to.

I found this beer back in the small cooler Larry has at Pipe and Pint and knowing it might be a bit outdated still grabbed knowing it was bottle conditioned and still likely in good shape and yeah I was right.Poured into a .5 liter stein a hazed russet color with a larege blooming white head that settled slowly into a creamy/frothy mass never completely settleing.Light hardwood smoke and caramel in the nose with a slight iron edge to it,nice full mouthfeel but it still goes down very easily.Flavors are caramel and anice upfront with the smoke being morein the background a bit of sweet dough is there as well.I think a well made doppelbock the smoke isnt strong but this bottle was a little dated,I liked it.

Wow I didnt know there was two Goosinators,this was the 2007 edition.

When in doubt, smoke it. Smoked beer is gaining popularity and with extreme beer not losing ground, Left Hand smoked this German-style Doppelbock.

Semi-clear tawny brew glows in the light, the head drops a good amount of lacing all the way down the glass. Soft but prominent smoky nose with a substantial dry malt character and faint whiff of alcohol in the aroma. Full jacket of malt, on the dry side, but layers of malt unfold with each sip and more so as the brew warms up a tad. Clean lager palate. Toasted grain with a hint of caramel is the base, the even-keeled smoke flavor sticks to the palate but is never enough to trump the malt. Hops are light but some bitterness comes through in the middle. Alcohol is clean and somewhat deceiving. Finishes with a long, faded smoke and toasted grain flavor.

Smoked beer is an acquired taste, you may say it is a love it or hate it character. All we have to say is thank you very much for such an exceptional beer.

The beer pours a hazy brown color with a white head. The aroma is great. I get a lot of ashy notes, but there is also a nice malt backbone behind the smoke. I get some toffee, caramel and some brown sugar. The flavor is heavy on the smoke. There is also some a nice amount of malt as well as some sugary sweetness. A very nice beer because you can get the doppelbock notes as well as the smoked notes. The smoke is dominant, but the malty sweetness is also a big player. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A 2007 bottle-conditioned, corked and caged, bomber.

A: Pours a beautiful copper orange with a thick off-white head and nice carbonation action that endures.

S: Holy campfire and bacon, batman! It's tough to get through the smokiness on this one. There are some sweet malts in the background but they are almost impossible to distinguish.

T: The palate is not quite as smokey as the nose, but that just means it's a step down from forest fire. You pick up a lot more of the sweet malts, with tendencies towards the darkest of chocolates. The finish is nice and warming, showing off it's higher alcohol.

M: A heavier beer, but not thick and chewy. It's got enough carbonation to give it a refreshing crispness for its medium to full body. The alcohol content helps cut through the texture as well.

D: Well, if I left this at first sniff and sip, I may have rated this beer poorly. You have to let this one warm up to you. At first I found the smokiness offensive to the nose, and only acceptable on the palate. As you progress through this doppelbock, though, the beer really begins to open up, especially on the taste buds. A unique beer that will be fun to show off of have at a bonfire.

750 ml. bottle, corked and caged. "2007 Bottle Conditioned".

Pours a slightly hazy dark chestnut body with copper highlights and an orange glint. The frothy tan head holds remarkably well and leaves craggy rings of lace with each sip.

The nose is clearly smoky, expressing beechwood, amidst a sweet, bready, toasty, and caramelish maltiness.

In the mouth it's medium-full and lightly creamy with a very fine-bubbled, natural, median carbonation that leaves it smooth and easy to drink.

The flavor is as the nose suggests, with a good amount of smokiness, but not soo much that it's overdone. It works well to complement the maltiness, and lends an overall depth to the beer that would otherwise not be possible as it enhances the complexity of the malt. Some floral and spicy hops make an appearance at the swallow, and it finishes dry. Surprisingly, the smokiness doesn't build on the palate in a negative way. It lingers, but very nicely.

Really nicely done. Quite enticing in its balance and complexity. Certainly worth seeking out for fans of beechwood smoked malt - one of the best I've had!!!

Poured amber/caramel with 1 finger of offwhite head. Good head retention & lacing

S: Rich smokeyness & bready notes

T: Breadyness & intense smokeyness up front. A bit of caramel & malt sweetness fight through the smokeyness. Finishes a bit dry with caramel sweetness & more smokeyness that works

MF: Medium bodied with excellent carbonation

Drank really easy but after about 2 or 3 I'm sure the abv & smokeyness would get to me

A- Almond brown and transparent. 1 finger of white head and lacing is not present in my snifter.

S- Very smoky like smoked salmon, just without the salmon. Somewhat nutty and burnt. It smells and tastes like a campfire, which is what LH was going for, I think.

T- Smoky as hell with woodsy tones like burning wood in the fireplace. The nuts carry over well from the nose.

M- Thin, and high on carbonation.

D- Low. Definitely not for sessioning. The smoke gets to you after a while.

Overall- I think they accomplished what they were shooting for with the smokyness. It was definitely that. All in all, not a bad beer, and a great experience for my palate.

Out of a 750ml tightly corked and caged bottle. Pours a fairly clear brown color with a nice fluffy khaki colored head that left some nice lacing on my dimple mug. The smell is smokey, burnt charred wet wood. The smokey aroma pretty much kills any other scents that may be present. Starts off with a hint of smoke which is quickly followed by a rich malty flavor. A chocolate and roasted meat flavor, with hints of prunes. This is followed by more smoke. The feel is well bodied with prickly carbonation, finishes malty sweet with a slight roast bitterness. Quite the hearty brew; great to pair with any roasted meats or smoked ribs and cheese. Definitely a nice beer to sit by the fire. Tastes good just not sure I could drink more than one in a sitting. Another excellent Big Mo brew.

A- Pours a slightly hazy deep chestnut with an ample yet bubbly tan head.

S- Definitely a Rauchbier. Initial carbonic tang quickly gives way to the distinct aroma of beechwood-smoked malt (sort of jerky-like, sort of barbecue-like... you know, what anything smoked over a hardwood fire smells like). It's distinct but not overpowering like Schlenkerla Ur-Bock.

T- All sweet up front... mainly brown sugar and molasses. As the beer rolls over your tongue, the smoke hits. Much like the aroma, the smoke is definitely there but not overpowering. As the beer is sweet but not heavy, the smoke flavor is right where it needs to be... any stronger and it would be out of balance. The beer finishes clean and dry, with just enough bitterness to keep things in check. No real noticeable alcohol burn, though it does leave the smoke flavor lingering on the roof of your mouth.

M- My main criticism of this beer is that it's rather thin-bodied. I expect a Doppelbock to be much fuller. Fortunately, as I mentioned above, the smoke malt is in balance with the mouthfeel. Nonetheless, I would have preferred a fuller beer with more smoke malt, and I think it would be truer to style.

D- The positive of the thin mouthfeel is that it makes the beer remarkably drinkable for a 7.8% beer.

Overall: A nice beer if you can get your hands on it. For those used to drinking smoked beers of the porter variety, a beer like this--with its lack of roast malts--is definitely worth trying. That being said, it needs to be a little fuller-bodied to compete with its Bamberg brethren (admittedly a lofty goal).

A: Pours a beautiful dark and burnt cranberry red with a huge 3 finger firm, dirty beige head that was sticky and left a good lacing behind. Visible carbonation was very high.

S: a soft roasted caramel and smoky nature.

T: The initial flavor was malty, semi-sweet which soon yields to a dark, smoky and bready caramel palate. A nice burnt caramel and roasted nature with smoky campfire notes truly highlight this beer. The flavor, although strong was well refined and smooth. On the finish was a beautiful lingering light burnt woodiness and smoky charcoal fade.

M: full and malty with some fizziness from carbonation with a warming roasted malt lacing that was moderately lasting in length.

D: Great smokes, a very rich and smoky treat limited to moderation of course and very good per style.

Bottle: Poured a clear deep amber color ale with a huge foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of of sweet malt with a side of toffee and light lingering finish of smoke malt. Taste is also very interesting with a well balanced mix between some smoked malt with some toffee and caramel malt. Body is full with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I very much appreciated the balance between smoke and caramel and toffee malt.

750ml bottle into mug.

Cloudy brown hue with a bit of a red tint and a one finger tan head that settles to a thick cap.

A lot of the toasty malt aroma is masked by plenty of smokey aromas.

Again in the flavor, the smoke is the dominant flavor, giving way to some caramel malts and a little chocolate. Full bodied with a good amount of carbonation. The smoke lingers for a while.

Probably a little too smokey, but still rather enjoyable. Rather complex after a year. Recommended.

Pours out a cloudy dark brown with tan suds at least 3 fingers worth.
Smell is smoke and lots of smoke. I can detect some raisin and fig in there with some caramel but mostly I just smell the smoke.
Taste is a bitter smoke with a caramel hint, then the flavor stops and you get a fizz on your tounge. The aftertaste is smoke and oak and caramel sugars.
Mouthfeel is quite nice with the fizzyness always present. Other than that there is a buttery smoked ham feel but that might be my imagination.
I like this stuff. It's not as good as Alaskan
Smoked Porter but it is still a very nice change from normal beers.

I grabed this 2005 bottle in Ohio on my last trip through, it had been stored in the fridge for a while and I was all over that. 750ML vinatge 2005 bottle was served at cellar temperature in an oversized wine glass. This one was consumed on 09/16/2008.

The pour was very nice with a rich dark brown being presented in the glass. Nearly opaque, though I could definitley see some sediment floating around in the glass. The head was nice, about tow inches at first but settling down quickly after that, leaving behind some nice side glass lace in its wake.

The aroma was much lighter and much sweeter then I would have thought it would be. Lots of smoke, for sure, however there was a ton of caramel malts mixed in that were actually quite dominant. The flavor was quite the same, well at first anyway as I picked up some nice light peat flavors that were wrapped up in a caramel infused ale. Rich would be an understatement as it warmed it go oh soo subtle, and even more complex. Some dark fruits started to show their head, fig, maybe grapes even, providing a subtle, yet definitly definable tart character to the mix. Smooth, creamy, borderin on full bodied feel was nicely carbonated any anything but thin. It was a sipper, though I have to admit that by the end, i was gulping the big bock like it was nothing.

Overall this was a seriously good beer that held up very well with time. I would have no issue with paying the 12 bucks for this one again as it was rich, lightly smoked and delicous. One of the better beers i have had from them for sure.

2007 Vintage, gifted

a: Pours into my snifter with a 2 finger off-white head. Slow recession, decent retention, light lacing. The beer is a ruby hued brown in color.

s: Aroma of cooled beechwood smoke, like walking into a salmon smokehouse on an off day. Smoked ham with a brown sugar crust. Underneath are German malts, probably some Munich in there, with an herbal hop aroma. When warmed, I get some subtle aromas of caramel, toffee, and date...nice level of caremelization. Great.

m: Carbonation on the high side of medium, with a medium body.

t: Nice smoke flavor lingers over a base of pale and German (Munich?) malts. Malt comes out more after the swallow, with some more toasted caramel coming through. Light-moderate, papery noble hop flavor. Long finish with a moderate bitterness.

d: very enjoyable...750 was a breeze

Nicer as a smoked beer than a doppelbock, so I've taken that into consideration...quite good but it could really use a bigger dark fruit presence (especially on the tongue), which I believe would make it phenomenal. The base beer itself seems just a little lackluster, and the smoke really pulls it through.

My 3rd and last American beer on 4th July 2008.

This cork and caged 750ml bottle (2007 brew) cost me an arm and a leg, from Utobeer in London.

As I eased the cork out the bottle hissed at me and an aroma of German Smoked Ham hit my nose.

I did a single pour, firstly into a Westmalle Trappist Chalice, when that filled I transfered without interupting the pour, to a Hoegaarden Grand Cru stemmed Tulip glass. Sadly I didn't see the sediment rise, so the Grand Cru got a Gnats Foreskin of sediment within its tulip.

The Westmalle glass held a lightly hazed dark mahogany brown/red liquid, the Grand Cru, a cloudier mix of the first glass. Both had a weak fading tan head that retreated to a wisp and collar.

As mentioned earlier, the aroma was of smoked ham, malts were also there. It reminded me greatly of Bamberg (Northern Franconia) and the Rauch (smoked) beers produced there.

The taste followed on from the aroma, with the alcohol coming into the taste, obviously hidden in the smokey smell. This is a beer to have with smoked meats or a cigar (I am not a fan of either). Having said that, it is also the sort of beer any self respecting beer student should try at least once. I am glad I have.

Like most Lager based beers, there is always a body/richness/thickness/smoothness issue. This was fine, but the same sort of beer using a top fermenting ale yeast would maybe have had more presence about it.

Most enjoyable and a fitting end to my 4th July American evening (Colorada evening really).

Pours a light brown , small head, no lacing.

Smell is malty sweet , some bread , a hint of smoke.

Smoke comes through on initial taste , some licorice , maltiness is in the background. Aftertaste reminds me of smoked salmon.

Mouthfeel is medium/thick. Decent carbonation.

Overall a very nice beer , somewhat different, but I like it.

2007 bottle.

Clear light brown lager with a tall light brown head.

Smell is sweet and smoky with a strong "Band Aid" scent. Smell is a bit nutty mostly pecan. Bit of caramel candy smell but this is very much a smoked beer.

The taste starts out sweet and very smoky with pretty much a barbecue flavor. Stout bitterness in the aftertaste. The usual Doppelbock flavors seem to be absent here.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Perfect Barbecue beer. Very much a smoked beer and probably should be listed as a Rauchbier. Probably would buy to bring to a cookout.

750 ML bottle purchased caged and corked from Buy Rite on Oak Tree in South Plainfield...
This Goosinator Doppelbock has an extremely smoke-filled essence - the smoke factor is very prominent on this one, both in the nose and the mouth... So much so, that this one could easily be construed as a Rauchbier rivaling Aecht Schlenkerla instead of its intended label as a Doppelbock...
Pours a gorgeous purple-colored hue with an immense foamy and frothy head which exhibited enormous staying power and refused to recede...
Strong, pronounced smoky aroma and rich caramel...
Taste strongly complemented the smell, with a noticeable essence of rich, smoked Beechwood malts, crispy rye, caramel,figs, prunes, and bread and butter notes...
Rich, creamy mouthfeel, slightly bitter with a small touch of sweet...
For the 7.7% ABV, the drinkability was likewise very good and solid...
Overall, another teriffic big-bottled beer from Left Hand, and although the price was steep, the flavor and character were certainly there...

On-tap 11/25/07 at Pitcher’s Pub in Cumberland, RI, served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a medium brown color, with a thin off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of chocolate, lager yeast and a touch of hops.

T: The taste is malty and extremely smoky, with a strong flavor of smoked sausage, which had me taken aback. There are some other flavors of chocolate, dark fruit and spice. The hops presence is mild with a strong background of smoked lager yeast. The after-taste is smoky with a touch of sweetness. The smoked sausage flavor completely dominates the taste and I didn’t like it at all, to the point where I couldn’t finish it. Therefore, by default, I can’t give a score in this category higher than 1.0.

M: Crisp and not very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, slightly sticky finish.

D: It’s flavorful but not very tasty, doesn’t go down too easily, it’s an ok representative of the style aside from the smoky flavor, but it actually seemed to get worse as I drank it. My thanks to the bartender that allowed me to return it and drink something else instead.
