The place is in a strip mall on Laskin Road in Virginia Beach, not much to look at but neat and clean with a beach going vibe to it. They serve hand tossed pizzas that , honestly, outshine the beer. I was very excited by the German beer style offerings, but they all fell short. I was there for the grand opening and I intend to go back and see if they've dialed in on the beer a bit.

Been to both Tapped locations “Tapped Gastropub and Tapped Crafthouse”. All dogs Got to Tapped is a smooth lager. The graham cracker malts pair perfectly with the spicy hops. There is no bitterness, great taste, is a perfect lager! Not to heavy not to light!

Of all of the places that I visited in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Richmond on my recent beer excursion only two breweries really stand out in my mind, and Wasserhund is one of them.

It's very down to earth and relaxed, very much like a beach-type place should be, although they're not really on the beach but about 3 miles out on Laskin Road. It's not a lot to look at, as so many of these places are, but it's OK, and certainly better than many I've been to (and I'm not just referring to brewpubs, but restaurant/bars in general).

What made it different was the vibe, the food, and the beer.

Normally I frown upon employees hanging out at the bar if they're not working (and especially if they are working!), but the comedic banter and camaraderie that I saw displayed was quite enjoyable and really gave the place a wonderful vibe. the chef coming out and asking people about their orders was exceptional, and my server Jordin was fantastic. I really felt at home, and I'm not at all a regular, it was my first visit! I truly felt as if my business meant something, and I haven't felt that in a very long time.

Beyond that, the beers were excellent. I sampled 4 and was pleased with every one, especially the "Getting Figgy With It" dunkelbock with raisins and figs, and the "Noble Threeway" amped up hefeweizen. As a professional brewer myself I can tell when a brewer knows what he's doing, and this guy knows his stuff.

For food it's pretty simple, and I also appreciated that they have a Deutch bent to it! Vorspeisen, salat, und spezialitäten pizza (shouldn't that be flammkuchen? No, that's the other kind of pizza!). You can hardly go wrong with the pizzas, but you can't go wrong with the brats either, and everyone can use a salad now and again.

I'd highly recommend a visit, and seeing as how it's not far from Whole foods, Total Wine & More, Trader Joe's, and Beercraft you could stop and pick up some beer while you're out.

Setting:
Went to check this place out on a weekday a few days after they opened. Location is in a strip mall setting in a retail area with shops and restaurants. Nice vibe with welcoming decor, moderate size L-shaped bar, other tables and high top seating.

Beer:
There were 7 beers on tap, mostly German style offerings. As it was the first time here, we got a flight to try everything. Most of the offerings were quite underwhelming. Below average to average across the board. The best of the group was the Dunkel but nothing to write home about.

Food:
German, featuring pizza? It would have been nice to have the German beer styles come through more in the food offerings. The pizza was again average.

Staff:
The staff was very friendly, however they seemed uneducated on the beer they were pouring.

Overall:
Disappointing. In the local crowded micro / nano brewery market there is room for German focused beer but Wasserhund has missed the mark. Perhaps it is early hiccups but it appears that the focus is too broad and the beer quality has suffered.

Went on soft opening so this review isn't even based off when place officially opens; I bring this up b/c this place could easily be more packed and/or make alterations. Went in on Saturday afternoon and place was busy but not overly packed. Service was busy but friendly and attentive and willing to talk shop as much as time permitted them to not stand around. Local vibe with some classic rock playing (heard some Floyd and Beatles among others) with sports on the TV (that's a plus to me). Food is alright and that's not criticism with faint praise, but honestly I just found the pizza and cheese sticks "not bad". Beers were good, nothing rock star great but nothing even remotely drain pour so you won't have a bad beer drinking experience. I was a little surprised that for a German themed brewery that they didn't offer up some more German food (there's more sausages than brats (sidenote: I'm a vegetarian so this wouldn't have mattered to me anyway)) or serve some beers in proper glassware i.e. a hefe in a hefe glass or an altbier in a stange (this does matter to me). Still, nice to see a new brewery open up in Va Beach and this place is worth checking out.
