When I visited Great Notion, I had the privilege of trying everything GN had to offer on tap, and from the roughly 20 offerings I tried, this was my favorite. I loved it on tap, but I am stoked to try it from the can. Let's dive in.
Canned 1/21/19. Consumed from a 10oz Great Notion flute glass.
L: Pours that bright, vibrant hazy golden color that I have grown to love. The hue is perfection. From a very slow and straight-centered pour, about 2 fingers of a creamy white cap rapidly formed, consisting of bubbles of various size. The head retained for a nice amount of time to boot. The lacing on this glass has me salivating. Heaps of sudsy lacing cling to the glass, further increasing my anticipation. Look-wise, this beer represents the way I prefer NEIPAs to look.
S: Extremely fruit-foward. Bountiful aromas of tropical fruits, such as mango, pineapple, banana and passionfruit. There is a great deal of peachy/apricot aromas coming off this beer as well. Citrus present, but not nearly in the amounts as the afore mentioned fruits. Hops are bright, grassy and slightly floral. This beer smells awesome.
T: The taste lives up the nose. Grassy hop complex with slight crackery yeast flavor sets the foundation from which the fruit complexity build upon. As in the nose, the tropical fruit flavor is there. Tons of mango, pineapple and banana. Orange, tangerine, pear and peach also in abundance. The finish is loaded with stone fruit flavor with flavors of pink starburst, bubble gum and tropical fruits. The aftertaste is pleasant and lingers for quite some time, resonating grassy/fruity goodness mentioned before.
F: For a single IPA, this is damn near perfection. Medium weight with a slightly lower than medium body. It has the right amount of heft to lend a smooth texture. It is soft, border-line pillowy and smooth as can be. Carbonation is at the sweet "goldilocks" spot. Not too high, not too low, just right. No ABV detection.
O: Though I might have a slight bias compared to how much I enjoyed it on tap, this beer didn't let me down from the can. The flavor is abundant, the smell is stellar, and the feel matches perfectly. 4.75 swept across the board for me. My only gripe is that I didn't come home with more of this. I would definitely drink again and totally recommend. I am very grateful to have tried. Cheers!

16oz can, tulip glass. Cloudy, pulpy straw yellow body, slight copper hue, one and half finger frothy white head with good retention and bits of lacing. Smell is a sweet pulpy orange and grapefruit presence, a bit of spicy tropical fruit, light sugary caramel malt, slight herbal resin. Flavour follows the nose fairly well, it's a fairly herbal take on a NE IPA style. Medium in body, good carbonation, nice and easily drinkable with enough bitterness for the hop heads out there. Good balance, not particularly bitter, but with a nice floral and herbal resin.

Tasted in a Spiegelau IPA glass from a one pint can on November 28, 2018. Brewed with Citra and Mosaic hops then combined with a legendary NE yeast strain. Notes of juicy mango, papaya and pineapple, with a smooth dry finish.

i have not had nearly enough beers from these guys, but every time i get into one, i walk away impressed. this is an all citra new england style, but its not as heavy and dense as so many of them are, and it even has a little bitterness to help it be more complete. bright yellow in the glass, uniformly hazy but not messy looking to me. the nose is so obviously citra, a fresh greenness to it, lemon and pineapple notes, soft and oily, simple really over a rather basic grain base, but sometimes less is more, and i like this as much for what it isnt as i do for what it is. its not over hopped, no green pellet dry hoppy bite that you get when you put too much hops in, this is the trend in the style right now and i hate it. it also isnt overly thick or starchy for the sake of it, it seems to be more of a protein haze here, nothing that slows down drinkability in the least. the hops have great fruitiness, freshness, and seem perfectly dosed. a little more carbonation would set this off, but i like everything about it. better than just about all of the citra only takes on this style.

Sample at Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen 2018, Blue Session. Hazy pale yellow color. Aroma has really zesty, citrusy and dank hop notes. Taste has milky yeast, dank hops and a sweet malt background. Really well balanced IPA.

Ripe. Pours like ripe fruit juice. Opaque, yellow to orange, white washed, bacon fat, juice. Creamy fluffy white head, tons of lace, perfect for the style.

Mango, papaya, lemon, lime, orange, and vanilla, then somehow a little weed. Something I don't think I've personally smelled in an all Citra beer, but it's there, and all of these aromas blend seamlessly into the flavor. Like a mimosa on steroids. And weed.

Creamy, juicy, smoothie, sweet fruited madness. Though that minor hop bitter bite is insanely welcomed.

Overall, this would make any juice/haze/crazed hop head piss their pants. It's the perfect single hop hazy IPA. Cheers.

Boise Beer crew weekend in Portland. Taster at Great Notion. Yet another hazy IPA, minor piney hoppy aroma. Hops bitterness up front, citrus. Some more resinous hops. Tangy.

Orange, peach, dank grass, pink grapefruit, papaya. Both nose and palate. The malt base does just enough to push all the flavors to the outermost limit of the envelope but at the same time keep them all in check. Imagine Kate Upton, but with Katrin Davíðsdóttir's abs, and Tia-Clair Toomey's thighs in a micro-thong and that pretty much describes how juicy, sexy, and clean (pun intended) this beer is. And clean, this beer is: for being a Northeast-style IPA, it's got an unbelievably crisp and dry finish, all the while retaining its sticky-icky chewy flaked oats body.

I wish I had more to say about this beer, but I'm tired of writing the same IPA review over and over, and there's not much else to say other than that it's got everything going for it and it doesn't fuck it up. This is a NEIPA both new and old money IPA lovers can get behind; regardless of whether you fall in the #hazebro or the #westcoasttillidie genera of bitter beer drinkers, Ripe will never let you down, like Rick Astley. Utterly relishing the opportunity to buy a case of this beer and just cracking one open everyday so I don't have to solo-dome a 1QT crowler on a Thursday evening.

Judge me all you want, I couldn't give two shits.

2018/updated: This pours a glowing pale orange. Amazing aroma. Lots of juicy pineapple right upfront, with a crisply effervescence that makes the beer pop on the palate. Utterly delicious.

Hazy as all heck. Light mango and guava makes its way into the party. Slightly more bitterness than their mandela, but still smooth and velvety. It's juicy and slick.

Crowler pour into a tulip glass. Pours hazy bronze orange with 1.5 fingers of medium density white head that dissipates quickly and left scattered spotted lacing. Nose is very tropical and citrus laden, apricot, cantaloupe, orange galor...could be a bit more prominent though. Taste follows the nose to a T, very juicy but left me wanting a bit more dynamic flavor. Finishes with just a slight bit of astringency, non-detectable bitterness. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy but a little thin, slight tingling from the astringency, and carbonation on the lower side. More carbonation may give it a slightly bigger mouthfeel. It's a very enjoyable brew, just wanted more dynamic attributes to the taste and a bit more body.

Look: hazy, much like east coast ipa's like the ones from Treehouse
Smell: fruit to the max. mango, guava, papaya, pineapple even, just bursting with fruit flavors
Taste: Fruity as all hell, with that classic ipa bitter bite to finish
Feel: velvety and smooth, very much like other cloudy ipas I have had

This might be my favorite great notion beer, they had some damn good beers, i don't think i had one that wasn't very, very good

Part of a NBS BIF. Crowler less than a week old.
As soon as I cracked the can, I got huge aromas of pineapple, citrus and dankness. Pours a hazy lemon/golden color with a big fluffy head. So much fruit! White grapefruit, mango, papaya, orange and lemons. Dankness and pine come into play here too. A lot of flavor with the right amount of bitterness to tip the scales for this hophead. So crushable too.

Juicy oranges, creamy a bit of Tang drink, pineapple, a bit of pine and earth, green on the finish. One of the best IPAs I had at the brewery. Again, another banger that one could associate with Trillium.

My good buddy brought me a crowler of this all the way back to Vermont.
Poured into stemmed tulips.
Pours an impossible hazy/cloudy medium honey color with generous white bubbly head.
Aromas are quite possibly the most enjoyable aromas I've ever experienced from any beer. As soon as I cracked the crowler, unbelievable amounts of juicy citrus and dank sticky hops radiated everywhere, before it was even poured.
Flavor is fantastic. Sticky tangerine, grapefruit and wet hoppiness abound.
Mouthfeel was very nice. Almost a bit gritty in the back of my throat.
Overall. This beer is world class. One of the best IPAs I've ever had. Stands with the best from Tree House, Hill Farmstead or Alchemist, IMO. Bravo!

Hazy golden orange.

Juicy fruit. Some much orange, mango, and papaya. Tropical bomb all the way. Citrusy and earthy. Some resiny.

Light bodied. Some stickiness.

Great IPA. East coast style.

This is by far one of the best beers I have ever had. After having treehouse beer, I've craved something like it for the longest time and no other IPAs would do the trick. My craving was satisfied last night at the GN taproom. Came out super cloudy and a beautiful deep straw/orange. The smell like all great notion beers was huge full of tropical aroma. And the taste left me needing to drink more and more... so I left with a crowler and drank that. I have only given out a few 5's and this is definitely deserving of it. I don't know how anyone is giving this a low rating... I would drink only this for the rest of my life and be happy.

Like Double Stake, I had a pretty good pour of this from a crowler.

A: Pours a near opaque hazy orange with cloudy suspended yeast. A one finger white head forms and recedes after a minute. Light lace.
S: Yep, juicy is a word I would describe for this. Makes my mouth water a little. Citrus, pith and lemon rind. Bursting with fruit juice, berries, passion fruit. Light to no malt character, and the fruit can be a little over ripe, but very good.
T: Not nearly as complex and bursting as the nose would suggest. Though still a good amount of berry, passion fruit, and lemon/citrus rind. All up front, and finishes with a watery filmy blahness.
M/O: A light body with moderate carbonation. No finish to this at all. It fades to nothing, and watery is the name of the game. Saying that, not harsh bitterness or off flavors. Really easy to chug a lug. Surprisingly so in that regard.

The nose is bursting, and juicy. The rest leaves some to desire. The finish is nonexistent and watery. Almost the opposite of some of the overly bitter for bitters sake west coast IPA's. There is a middle ground, and this seems just a little week in that regard. Still enjoyable to drink, and not bad at all. Though outside of the nose, I just don't find anything exceptional here.

The crotchety bitching of the northwest is coming through on the ratings and reviews, not just the forums. Price isn't one of the components of rating folks! This is what it aims to be; reduced bitterness, big orange and citrus pith, juicy and zesty. Needs to evolve, probably a bit of complexity to the yeast and maybe more importantly to the malt bill (some wheat or dextrine in there?) but this is on the road to being great.

Had this at the grand opening. Ripe IPA is a good name as it smells of overly ripe almost rotting fruit. Taste is ripened fruit with the traditional NW style hoppiness. Mouthfeel, like most of their beers I tasted, was less than desirable. Some of them tasted like they had lots of artificial flavoring.

This beer just placed #5 on Willamette Week's "best IPA's made in Portland" where like 8 supposed beer aficionados drank 75 IPA's out of plastic cups in like 5 hours. I'm not sure what is more ridiculous, how they conducted the tasting or that this beer actually made the top 10. Suffice it to say the hype around this new Portland brewery is overblown(and most of it was probably paid for) and I will not be visiting Great Notion Brewery again.

Thick, cloudy orange haze with a great nose of citrus fruit. This beer is a taste of the Northeast in Portland.

Could not stop drinking it once I took the first sip, and have been thinking about when I'm going to go back and get another every since I left the brewery. This is a serious hard-hitter from a brand new brewery in a beer town that has more IPAs than you could drink in a decade.

Go. Drink. This. Now.

Beautiful golden orange color. Hazy but not murky. Tons of peach, mango, pineapple on the nose which is followed in the taste. Very low bitterness, this is definitely a fruit heavy IPA. Possibly a bit more bitterness wouldn't hurt, but it is still very good as is. Mouthfeel is a bit light and crisp. Really delicious stuff, one of my favorite IPAs out of their lineup.
