DATE: May 16, 2019... OCCASION: watching the first installment of Barron's Pivotal Players series--St. Francis of Assisi... GLASSWARE: Duvel snifter... pours an intense, velvet red body that shun light and explodes with a finger's worth of fuzzy pink bubbles--no doubt there be fruit in this one... raspberry, blackberry, a bouquet of wild flowers, bright oat and hay--nothing punchy or arresting, but all the same, a meaningful draw that encourages a first sip... the blueberry flourishes late... some candied elements make this seem imbalanced... that first sip is dry yet robust, acidic and lively--a drink worth sipping but not too tough to accelerate through its sixteen-ounce can... its base suggests a combination of a brown and Belgian pale ale... the berry is tart, mouth-wateringly so, and well above its malt base... this is punchier than its aroma suggests, chewable like a Wonka candy, and subtly winelike... cherry seeps into the blackberry, blueberry, and raspberry, while the grains ground this in a real, appreciable way... I didn't plan to purchase this when I visited CM, but I am pleasantly surprised this has given me a nice night of slow, flavorful drinking at a modest yet recognizable ABV...
