Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.40%

Availability: Spring

Notes / Commercial Description:
Author James Fenimore Cooper gave the name 'Glimmerglass' to the beautiful body of water that graces Cooperstown. Nestled between gentle mountains, it reflects any object held up to it, just as it reflects our joy at the arrival of each spring.

Deep straw to light amber in color with a thick, pure white head. The saison yeast strain gives off fruity aromas of pear, apple and slight citrus balanced with a delicate floral hop character and a touch of spiciness. Taste is very clean, with pronounced fruit flavors, delicate bready malt followed by welcomed spicing. Crisp finish with lingering yet subtle notes of yeast and touches of fruity pepper.

A big, billowing, fine white head overwhelms the Offero glass and lingers a long time before leaving a patchwork of lace. Random but continuous carbonation enlivens the clear (SRM 5) straw beer. Yeast was left in the bottle.

Musty horse-blanket aromas are accentuated by coriander, wheat, light floral, and some lemon zest.

Malt and bitterness were greater than expected of this style. Mildly sweet fruit brings out citrus rind and light pepper. The finish is lingering and dry. Warms well too.

A woolly texture compliments the medium-to-full-bodied beer. Alcohol is more prominent than expected, but still controlled. Overall this one is very dry with lively carbonation.

Glimmerglass is an excellent beer for relaxing and is almost sessionable. I enjoyed it on a cool summer day while reading on the porch.

Ommegang "Glimmerglass"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "BEST BY 01/2016"
$3.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Appearance: Hazy orange-gold body beneath a massive head of white that settles slowly to a thin surface covering. Wide splashes and large spots of lacing ring the glass.

Aroma: Quite yeasty. Dried apricot. Some plastic -like phenols. A bit of chalky mineral. Subtle sweet malt with a dandyish side that reminds me of Spree or SweetTarts.

Flavor: As the flavor indicates, the yeast is quite full-on; perhaps I should have let it settle for a few more days. The malt is not as sweet as the nose suggests, nor is it as candy-ish, but the apricot-like fruitiness remains along with some pear and apple. It's mildly bitter but the phenolics and a bit of peppery spice helps to round it out and bring it to a dry finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light in body and gently effervescent.

Overall: A pleasant saison although the yeast and phenolics are a bit on the high side.
