Style: Belgian Dubbel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Abbey was Ommegang's first beer and was styled after Dubbels produced by Belgian Trappist monks. A deep, rich and malty ale, Abbey uses several Belgian specialty malts and spices resulting in a very aromatic, flavorful beer.

Deep burgundy in color, topped by a dense tan head, Abbey Ale is rich on the palate but with a dry finish. Suitable for cellaring, Abbey develops wonderful caramel, fig, and currant notes with age.

Boom! Fantastic Abbey with just the right amount of snap and everything else. Decent value as well. Malty, sweet, bitter, creamy, beautiful and satisfying. One of my favorite brews to enjoy later at night. Winner...Winner...Chicken Dinner! Try some!

A: Pours a 2 finger head that dissipates rather quickly. Color is a rich deep burgundy with yeast suspended throughout.

S: Smells intoxicating. A mix of malt, chocolate, coffee, and overripe fruit. Raisins, prunes, figs

T: Dark fruits with cloves and pepper yield to a creamy chocolaty malt which sets up a dark roasty bitterness and finishes clean.

O: Wow. This is my first Ommegang beer and it will be the first of many more. This beer is such a delight, complex and rich, perfect for a chilly autumn day. The alcohol dangerously well hidden. This is

A: crystal clear; dark amber, but beet red if held to the light; 1 finger big bubbled tan head that receded to a wispy cap; no lacing;

S: pancake batter first, then cough syrup;

T: rich and complex; mostly malt; dried fruit; mold bitterness on the finish;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish; alcohol is warming, but appropriate;

O: the cough syrup aspect of the aroma was not especially inviting, but the flavor was very enjoyable;
