BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Brewery Ommegang

ommegang.com

Style: English Oatmeal Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.30%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Lovely, Dark and Deep pours deep black with a tan, creamy mousse-like head. Aromas of roasted malt and coffee with cream, coupled with subtle notes of chocolate and dark fruit from Ommegang’s house yeast prevail. Flavors of rich chocolate milk, and coffee and cream are impeccably balanced with restrained sweetness and hints of roastiness. The finish is silky smooth with a medium to full body.

Brewed with a rich blend of malts including chocolate malt, midnight wheat, and flaked oats, and given a small addition of lactose, Lovely, Dark and Deep has a hint of sweetness and a smooth body. The beer is hopped with Bravo and Styrian Golding hops and Ommegang’s signature house yeast is used in both primary and secondary fermentation.

After reading the entire label,I should have been ready for the disappointment that followed.
The bold headline " Lovely, Dark and Deep, and the buzz words,
Oatmeal Stout, and keep them coming, Winter Ale, had my taste buds and taste memory dialed in.
Lovely; Lousy, Dark; yes like a pot of left over coffee, Deep; is that like " Heavy Man ", or in over your head.
I managed to give this brew a 15 minute, multi sip review and must admit the last taste was that of a well balanced Light Ale. For, it was still Oat without the Meal, Winter without a storm.
Lesson learned. I was sold a used car. Final note: perhaps the beer was improperly stored.
Nah, Just All Shout, No Stout! All Sale, No Ale!

12 oz bottle. Pours black with tall, creamy, beige head and nice lacing. Aroma is of toasted malt, dark fruit and coffee. Body is medium and slightly crisp. Taste is sour of toasted malt, coffee, brown sugar, dark fruit and chocolate. Finish is long and sour. Probably there is something wrong with this bottle.

Showed signs of oxidation. A little bit astringent as well. Flavor and aroma seem to lack depth

Look: Black, 1.5 fingers of head

Smell: Stoutish

Taste: Very slight hint of sweet stout upfront that quickly turns tart:
Slight earthy tobacco note and hops in the middle, with the tartness lingering
on the pallet.

Feel: A hint of creaminess, but a little thin overall; prickly on the tongue.

Overall: This is one where the label description just doesn't materialize for me,
much to my own chagrin. (Thought this would be in my wheelhouse. More of a
tart ale then a stout, that's lacking sweetness. Wouldn't drink again.

Appearance: Black body with a thick creamy light khaki head comprised mostly of small fine bubbles. It looks inviting.

Aroma: I get a nice coffee aroma with a bit of roasted nuts in the background. There is a slightly odd aroma that I can't quite put my finger on. Mostly it smells good though. It doesn't have an aroma that just pulls me in but again it doesn't smell bad. I get some charred popcorn in there too.

Taste: Right up front there is that charred popcorn flavor I got on the nose. If you like charred popcorn you'll probably really like this. Personally I do like the flavor but in an oatmeal stout I'm looking for more subtle and easy drinking flavors. There is some chocolate that makes it through.

Mouthfeel: This is probably the greatest downfall here. The body is medium with a slightly crisp finish...a far cry from the smooth velvety finish that is often attributed to oatmeal stouts.

Overall: I was really looking forward to a new offering from Ommegang that was a departure from the usual. I was especially excited to find out that this would be an oatmeal stout. I don't feel that my excitement has led to any lofty expectations but I do somehow feel letdown by this beer. With a name like "Lovely, Dark and Deep" I was wanting more lovely and deep and a little less "plain old dark." I won't be looking for this in the stores again. I'm actually happy that I'm finding out how this beer tastes now instead of being let down around Christmas. Average at best.

A Belgian Dark, not an Oatmeal Stout...

Meh... I'm not a huge dark beer lover, but it's ok for what it is as a Winter Ale. Somewhat over-carbonated, or maybe my pour sucked. Nice lacing. Good spice character. Taste holds well after you drink.

Poured into an Ommegang goblet.

Look: Dark chocolate blackness with ruby to brown hues on the edges. Mocha colored head that recedes to a healthy thick film. Thick sheets of lacing that dissipate to a world map.

Aroma: Faint Belgian yeast gives way to earthy tea leaves and ultimately a cocao nib kind of chocolate. Lactose sugar in the finish.

Taste: Strong notes of Belgian yeast up front -- a bit musty with cardboard. Somewhat toasty with faint charred grains and bitter chocolate, with a hearty oatmeal note. The finish is sharp and tangy.

Mouthfeel: Medium to light, on the thin side.

Overall: I liked thus less and less the more I had it. The Belgian component overtook the other flavors I was looking for.

12 oz bottle

Black in color, not much head. Roasty aroma, a little bitter chocolate. Taste is too bitter and acidic for my preference. Could be thicker too.

Also, over priced for a standard oatmeal stout.
