Style: Oatmeal Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.30%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Lovely, Dark and Deep pours deep black with a tan, creamy mousse-like head. Aromas of roasted malt and coffee with cream, coupled with subtle notes of chocolate and dark fruit from Ommegang’s house yeast prevail. Flavors of rich chocolate milk, and coffee and cream are impeccably balanced with restrained sweetness and hints of roastiness. The finish is silky smooth with a medium to full body.

Brewed with a rich blend of malts including chocolate malt, midnight wheat, and flaked oats, and given a small addition of lactose, Lovely, Dark and Deep has a hint of sweetness and a smooth body. The beer is hopped with Bravo and Styrian Golding hops and Ommegang’s signature house yeast is used in both primary and secondary fermentation.

I have to admit to being impressed by the beer name's allusion to a fairly famous Robert Frost poem. The new 12-fl. oz. bottle depicts a rider on horseback stopping by woods on a snowy evening, but I am curious by the steed's head being bowed down. The poem says that the lake is frozen so the question becomes: what is the horse doing? Of no matter. I took a course in American Literature as an undergrad at Pitt & then taught this very poem for many years as a high school English teacher. It is now time to drink some beer!

From the bottle: "Winter Seasonal".

Whoops! I am running a little late, but such is the nature of the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody. I Pop!ped the cap & began a gentle pour into an awaiting glass. Once this step was completed, a vigorous in-glass swirl produced just under two fingers of dense, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with moderate retention, leaving behind nice lacing in its wake. Color was stygian Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing ZERO light penetration. Nose was rather rich with notes of coffee, baker's chocolate and light smoke. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but on the approach. The taste had an interesting, unexpected treacle/anise sharpness to go along with the bittersweet chocolate and dark roasted coffee. Hmmm. Warming, I also got dried, dark fruits. Interesting. Finish was semi-dry, slightly bitter and a nice way to warm up on a chilly, rainy spring day. That said, I feel that one was satiating. Onward!

12 ounce bottle, stamp on bottle says best by 9/2017. Served in a Spiegelau stout glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch and a half tan head that stayed around for a while. There's a decent amount of lacing. The brew smells like oats, dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, dark bread and roasted malt. For the most part I think the taste is the same as the aroma, but there's also some coffee and cream flavors noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's smooth and easy to drink with a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought it was an enjoyable brew, certainly worth a try! $3.49 for a single bottle.

Pours nearly black with a half inch of fine, khaki froth. Mild aroma smells of toffee, nougat, and brown sugar with hints of nutmeg and Belgian yeast.

The taste features molasses, soy sauce, and a dash of herbal hops on the front end, succeeded by roasted malt and milk chocolate notes in the finish. The yeast lends a mild, bubblegum aspect, while nutmeg affords some seasonally appropriate Belgian flare. Medium body and high carbonation precipitate a lush, vigorous mouthfeel with a sweet, sticky afterglow.

Overall, this is a characterful Belgian "stout" that manages to bring some intrigue to this paradoxical style.

Bottle from a lazy dog,
Deep brown bordering on black with a tightly bubbled khaki head that persists, Earthy roasty, spicy on the nose with bits of chocolate and dark fruit. Taste is somewhere between oatmeal stout and Belgian Dubbel. Decent enough drinker, but not exactly working for me.

Pours a dark brown color with khaki colored head. Raw cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, and some bread on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium to full bodied. Finishes with cocoa and roast. Smooth.
