This beer was brewed at Liefman’s in Belgium. It tastes almost exactly like the old Liefman’s Kriek, which hasn’t been produced in years. Cherry flavor is perfect; not cloying, artificial, or syrupy. Excellent balance of acidity and mouthfeel. Almost impossible to drink slowly. Awesome sour beer, and my new favorite cherry beer. And at $9.99 / 4pk, I consider this a great deal. The original Liefman’s Kriek was $7 for a 375ml.

Not at all sure what to expect here. Picked it up on a whim. 33 cl bottle into the work snifter.

A - Much darker than I expected. A deep ruby red that becomes brown in the glass. I good sized khaki head with tiny bubbles. Looks almost like a quad.

N - Yeah, plenty of cherry. Smells exactly like Wisconsin Belgian Red. Maybe bordering on medicinal. Overpowering cherry.

T - Interesting! Not terribly complex, and finishes very clean. Lots of cherry, but I also get the Belgian-style candi-sugar. It really tastes like a fruity dubbel. Refreshing, actually.

M - Like a shirley temple just a little thicker. This is really very pleasant; I get cherry coating all over the place.

O - To me this is like Three Philosophers lite with extra cherry, and that is not a bad thing at all. Well done.

another great ommegang product, they really never miss. this is different than normal kriek types, as it has a richer malt base, and is quite a bit darker, almost more of an oud bruin blended into a kriek, with elements of the sweeter bigger grain bill and some cherry notes in the souring to go along with the real fruit. red to brown in the glass, great big belgian looking head on it, stands up well. it smells like sweet pie cherries and nutty sweet caramel malt, with a hint of fruity vinegar on the back end and some lacto. the flavor is a lot like the nose, fortunately a little less sweet, and anything but one dimensional. while the cherries might lead the way. its god a nice sour brown base, like the liefmans goudenband blended in or something. the cherries love the darker malt, and it ends up being a very flavorful brew with a lot of different elements coming together. nto real sour, maybe a four or five on the spectrum to ten, but enough acidity to cut the fruit sugars in the finish, and plenty of bubbles to keep it moving. maybe a touch too sweet to drink a lot of, but its delicious beer and is a nice addition to the ommegang lineup.

appearance: light brown (is this a lambic or an oud bruin with fruit?). head lasted longer than most sours, but it's all relative... head lasted 60 seconds instead of 15.

aroma: i detected some tartness/sourness along with the unmistakable smell of cherries.

taste: does not follow the smell as much as i would have wanted it too. sweetness is just barely stronger than the tartness. this beer has been pasteurized and sweetened. cherry flavor is prominent.

mouthfeel: i bit of viscosity that lingers on the tongue. carbonation is a shade under medium.

overall: an easy-drinking, very lightly sweetened oud bruin on cherries. ommegang/liefmans are trying to shoot the moon here and i'm not sure they're successful. it's not sweet enough to appeal to the lindemann's crowd, and it's not tart/sour enough to reel in the sour-heads. i'm happy to hear that this is a year-round offering. i suspect this will be many people's "gateway sour." for me, i suspect this might become my Goose Island IPA of sours: i'll happily drink it when available in non-beer-nerd bars; but given a choice of other decent beer i doubt i'll be reaching for Rosetta very often.

Type: 750-ml. bottle
Glass: Karl Strauss 26th anniversary .25L tulip
From: Costco in Grossmont (La Mesa), Calif.
Price: $5.99
Purchased: Nov. 14, 2017
Consumed: Dec. 31, 2017
Reviewed as: Flanders Oud Bruin
Misc.: Best before January 2022

Had this in the fridge for a long time after Rachel picked it up at Costco. Would be my first review from Brewery Ommegang, which I’ve kind of refused to review since its location (Cooperstown, N.Y.) was so close to my prior location (Oneonta, N.Y). Description read, “Ale aged on cherries. Traditional Belgian Kriek, pleasingly tart with a touch of sweetness. Brewed exclusively for Brewery Ommegang by Liefmans, a sister brewery, in Belgium.”

Poured a reddish brown murky color with 2-to-3 fingers of frothy off-white head. Lots of bubble streams coming up along the sides of the glass. World-class uneven foamy lacing. World-class foamy retention. (Sight - 4.50)

Smelled black cherry, cherry pie, red apple, brown sugar, plums, dark fruit, chewy cherry candy, honey and raspberry. Had me really looking forward to trying it. (Smell - 4.50)

Taste following the nose for the most part. Wow. Got that chewy cherry candy up front. Also cherry cider, black cherry soda, sugary cherry pie, red apple, dark fruit, brown sugar, raspberry, plums and purple grape. (Taste - 4.50)

Medium body. Oily-to-sticky texture. Average carbonation. Sugary sweet finish. (Feel - 4.25)

Wow. This was just awesome. Not sure I’d need the whole 750-ml. bottle by myself, but it was delicious. (Overall - 4.50)

Pours a murky brown color with burnt orange highlights, capped by an inch of fine, khaki froth. Robust aroma smells of tart cherry, toffee, concord grape, and lightly toasted bread—almost like French toast smothered in preserves.

The taste is similarly tart and sweet, yielding copious amounts of sour cherries with dilute apple cider vinegar. Hints of caramel and bread malt lurk unobtrusively in the background as the sourness does its thing. Warming reveals additional toasted bread in the finish. Yeast lends a light spiciness in addition to the obligatory Belgian mojo. Medium body and high carbonation make for a full, prickly mouthfeel that serves its purpose of scrubbing the palate on the back end.

Overall, this is quite a nice oud bruin that exceeded my expectations. It doesn't necessarily distinguish itself from other high quality peers, but every facet is well executed and to style. Would be a great gateway beer into oud bruins for the uninitiated.

I saw this the other day and figured I would try it based on the description on the bottle. I was not sure what to expect being new to the whole Gose style. Nose was nice, definitely detected cherry and I know its weird but almost detected the sourness. The first sip was kinda weird there was the cherry but then I was hit with the sourness, was it vinegar? No I don't know what it was but it subsided and made this beer enjoyable. The cherry and sour mix was very mix of sweet and tart. I was very surprised with this beer and will be back for more. Living in FL I can see this beer being a staple for the next few months while it is warm.

An excellent beer! It's mostly sweet, with a (great, but not too great) touch of tartness from the cherry. The fact that it is not so tart make it a very drinkable beer in any situation. No hoppiness at all.

L: Pours a brownish-red with a sizeable, off-white head. Effervescent. Head retention is superb, as is the norm for Ommegang-brewed beers. Abundant lacing.

S: Tart cherries, vinegar, toast/baked bread, I also get a bit of a medicinal note on the back end.

T: Sweetness upfront fades rather quickly into a tart cherry flavor. Mild acidity, and toasty malt on the back end. The sweet and tart flavors balance rather well here.

F: Medium carbonation, light-medium body, a bit of prickly carbonation, but feels very smooth and silky on the palate. Semi-dry on the finish.

O: A very nice beer. The balance between the tartness/acidity and the sweetness is very nice. The toasty malt works quite nicely with the rather dry finish.

A burgundy brown pour in the glass with about a finger of off white/tan head

The initial aroma is sweet and malty, with those sour cherry and raspberry notes in the background

Flavor is mildly tart but very balanced, the cherries take center stage here, but it's not overpowering by any means. There's a very light floral hop aftertaste to complement it

The feel at first is a bit bland, it kinda just coats the mouth until the swallow, but it eventually goes down

Overall this is an enjoyable Flanders, though it's only my second of the style, I still much preferred Red Poppy, though that should be expected due to the price difference lol. This is good and sessionable for the abv, but maybe a little sweet to have more than a few

One year old bottle 330 into a tulip glass. !/2 in beige head, only lasted a few minutes. Pronounced aroma of vinegar. Also a vinegar taste on the back of the throat after swallowing. Not my favourite style but we'll see how it develops over the next several years.
