Pours a pale straw with well over a finger of head. This offering is quite effervescent and there is also a healthy dose of floaties. The nose is a combination of hops and funk. The flavor follows the nose. There is clearly a hop presence on the finish but the funk cuts into the enjoyment of the hops.

Foggy straw golden color, foam is rich and very fine, lacing on glass. Smells honey, lemon, caramel Fuji apple, coriander smells. That’s a zesty, hoppy and ripe fruity smell. The beer is light body, bitter and dry. There’s tangerine, pineapple, lemon custard, white pepper, Fuji apple, roast sweet potato, pomelo pulp, coriander and ginger aromas. The beer also shows toasty bread aroma, more like a light burn caramel, and then hard candy’s sweet aroma. The aftertaste is bitter, like cheese molds, which is bit peppery and spice. The beer have a bread, wheat grain backbone. And there’s hard candy malt character (or maybe candy sugar added). There’s floral fragrance like mix of chamomile and mild jasmine. It’s also hoppy, shows zesty citrus aromas. It also shows Belgian wheat ale’s coriander, ginger spice. To me, this doesn’t taste like Belgian IPA. It taste like a mashup of Belgian wheat ale, Belgian Tripel (candy sugar, floral yeast; it’s like chouffe’s earthy Belgium golden ale), with extra hops.

May 8th, 2016 - Long before D&D absolutely wrecked the Game of Thrones hype, Ommegang was on the hype train in a first class cabin, putting out some interesting brews themed to the show. This one starts oddly, with corn chips and pineapple juice, and then gives way to a touch of blood orange on the nose. A bit like a fruity salsa, I reckon. And then the taste, which is very Ommegang in its heavy Belgian notes. It reminds me a bit of a Unibroue beer, both soft and velvety, and with an intensity of flavor.

750 mL corked and caged bottle from the LCBO; best before Mar 15 2017 and served well chilled. Given how, um, 'expired' this beer is, my review should be taken with a heaping spoonful of salt... that is, unless your bottle has also been sitting in a cellar for two years too long. On the other hand, old bottle-conditioned beers have surprised me in the past...

Pours lightly hazy, pale golden in colour and very effervescent, crowned with one finger of resilient, lumpy white head that seems to maintain cohesion indefinitely. Successive bands of lace coat the glass as its level drops; I have high expectations for BIPAs, visually-speaking, and this one looks fantastic in spite of its extreme age. The aroma is still reasonably enticing too - quite yeasty and spicy, with a fair bit of clove alongside hints of orchard fruit and rather wheaty, grainy pale malts. Slight touches of green banana and subtle, unobtrusive phenolic character; I've smelled better, but this'll do.

It took a few sips for my taste buds to acclimate to its intensity; nonetheless I enjoyed this beer right from the get-go. The underlying malt backbone has an understated grainy, bready wheat sweetness - but it's the spicy, fiercely peppery yeast character and floral, fruity hops that take up the lion's share of the flavour profile. I'm getting clove and peppercorn, with hints of bell pepper, green banana, apple skin and citrus zest. More phenolic towards the back end, which bends back towards floral hop bitterness and spiciness; the aftertaste is a little too persistent for my preferences, but that's a minor issue at best. Medium in body, with assertive carbonation that remains prickly to the end. The alcohol does become a little noticeable as it warms, to the extent that I'm thinking maybe the abv has crept upwards? It is (or was) a live product, after all.

Final Grade: 4.15, an A-. Considering that this is an IPA that was purchased 2 or 3 years ago, and thenceforth neglected on a concrete cellar floor, Seven Kingdoms has held up with remarkable grace. Perhaps a dungeon floor would've been more appropriate, but either way I'm shocked at how much I still enjoyed this one. At the end of the day, I wish I'd tried it fresh... but since my glass is still half-full, I'm feeling optimistic! I've always wondered how a Belgian IPA holds up in the cellar, and now I know: that's valuable life experience, right there.

Pours a golden straw color with an almost snow drift like head. Classic Belgian yeast esters in the aroma with clover and herbal hops. The taste is hop forward with herbal tones. Bready malt crispness. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied. Medium bitterness.

Appearance: Cloudy golden, with a huge white head and fine suds. Lace is small but present.

Aroma: Bright and floral, very nice.

Taste: Belgian yeasts present up front, with spices, and packed with bitter and floral notes. I get lemony hops and spicy, peppery flavors here, melded artfully into a tasty and flavorful ale. Solid and very drinkable.

DATE: July 17, 2017... OCCASION: Game of Thrones Season 7! GLASSWARE: Affligem chalice...pours a golden body with reasonable effervescence... head is snow-white and smooth, creamy with a finger’s worth of lacing... grapefruit, banana, peppercorn, bubblegum, orange peel, lemon, ginger, and enticing floral hops that welcome more deep breaths... light, refreshing, crisp, and dry at the finish--a phantom 6.9% with a lingering honey, bubblegum, and flowery hops... through each sip, the glass laces in a wash of white... the flavor profile is respectfully hoppy, with flowers, orange and lemon piquing early... a light bubblegum, pepper, and honey mix is secondary, with banana and clove also apparent.... a late malt push suggests this seeks some balance, though it refreshes with its aromatic overtones... much like the first episode, this beer is solid--no surprises, just a re-establishment of a style with subtle nuance... worthy of a chalice, not necessarily of its price tag...

Clear golden colored ale with a massive pillowy white head.

Smells strongly hoppy. Smells yeasty and sweetly of honeysuckle. Smells strongly of coriander.

Starts out very dry and lemony in the mouth. Very herbal tasting and strong coriander. Peppery tasting. Mildly bitter. But mostly this is dry as a bone.

Mouthfeel is light.

Overall it tastes like a bone dry Saison.

From the older bottle, it pours a hazy orange-amber with a nice head that lasts. Some lacing as you enjoy it. I get some fruit in the nose, along with the yeast and malt. The mouth revels in the malt and hops flavor. Personally, I think it ages well! Yum!
