750 mL corked and caged bottle from the LCBO; best before Mar 15 2017 and served well chilled. Given how, um, 'expired' this beer is, my review should be taken with a heaping spoonful of salt... that is, unless your bottle has also been sitting in a cellar for two years too long. On the other hand, old bottle-conditioned beers have surprised me in the past...

Pours lightly hazy, pale golden in colour and very effervescent, crowned with one finger of resilient, lumpy white head that seems to maintain cohesion indefinitely. Successive bands of lace coat the glass as its level drops; I have high expectations for BIPAs, visually-speaking, and this one looks fantastic in spite of its extreme age. The aroma is still reasonably enticing too - quite yeasty and spicy, with a fair bit of clove alongside hints of orchard fruit and rather wheaty, grainy pale malts. Slight touches of green banana and subtle, unobtrusive phenolic character; I've smelled better, but this'll do.

It took a few sips for my taste buds to acclimate to its intensity; nonetheless I enjoyed this beer right from the get-go. The underlying malt backbone has an understated grainy, bready wheat sweetness - but it's the spicy, fiercely peppery yeast character and floral, fruity hops that take up the lion's share of the flavour profile. I'm getting clove and peppercorn, with hints of bell pepper, green banana, apple skin and citrus zest. More phenolic towards the back end, which bends back towards floral hop bitterness and spiciness; the aftertaste is a little too persistent for my preferences, but that's a minor issue at best. Medium in body, with assertive carbonation that remains prickly to the end. The alcohol does become a little noticeable as it warms, to the extent that I'm thinking maybe the abv has crept upwards? It is (or was) a live product, after all.

Final Grade: 4.15, an A-. Considering that this is an IPA that was purchased 2 or 3 years ago, and thenceforth neglected on a concrete cellar floor, Seven Kingdoms has held up with remarkable grace. Perhaps a dungeon floor would've been more appropriate, but either way I'm shocked at how much I still enjoyed this one. At the end of the day, I wish I'd tried it fresh... but since my glass is still half-full, I'm feeling optimistic! I've always wondered how a Belgian IPA holds up in the cellar, and now I know: that's valuable life experience, right there.

this is right in the ommegang wheelhouse, teed right up for what they do best, and they deliver as expected. maybe the safest beer in this series so far, no chili peppers or anything going on, but its also one of the best so far. classic belgian yeasty saison, belgian pale hybrid type here. lots of fresh dense wheat malt, but the yeast lightens it up, dries it out, and inserts some serious carbonation to make it feel really alive. well hopped too, on the hoppier side, especially for ommegang, but i think the grassy bitter earthy hops really work with both the yeast and this flavorful wheat. its refreshing and its very dry. it feels and tastes like it could have come from the old world, and while the recipe may be more modern than traditional, the overall vibe of this is very rustic and ancient. their yeast is amazing, always is, and the base beer is light enough and simple enough to really let it shine here. not as punchy and peppery and spicy as it often can be with these guys, but plenty distinct. on tap at fire on the mountain, who continues to have awesome beers rotating through all the time. always something unique pouring up here.

-spiegelau ipa glass.

A: Beautiful light lemony orange coloring, heavy on the haze with a vibrant effervesce factor swirling about within. The capping is large in structure, almost mountanious, breaching the rim, bone white in color and seemingly everlasting. Great full sheet coverage lines the vessel with multiple descending rings downward.

S: Sweet orange peel, corriander and pepper citrus for aroma. Mixes with some lemon, slightly above aveage strength, spicy, sweet, very good overall.

T: Flavor was spicy pepper orange with a wheat palate. Tart citrus-grapefruit breaks out, with some hay and pine notes. Sweet grains, earthy floral hops and a soft dry belgian yeastiness on the close.

M: Crisp active carbonation, warming and spicy on the hold, wheaty feel, bubbly and frothy texture.

O: Clean, spicy and tart citrusy-grapefruit, lightly dry, and finely brewed and balanced for optimium drinking pleasure. Ommegang makes very clean, balanced and drinkable belgian style beers, this certainly stands out. I dont give out many ratngs above 4.0, this certainly deserves recognition beyond just the very good status.

Served in a flute glass right from a 750ml bottle.

Appearance: Cloudy gold color with an extra thick white head regardless of the pour is gentle or hard....rises high to roughly about two finger's length and barely settles leaving little extra meat on the head after two or three sips.

Scent: Aw man, super extra yeasty with hints of lemon. Smells good but more on the lighter side.

Taste: The taste is a little bit everywhere. Little sour, little honey and little malty.

Mouth: Initially a fully carbonated beer but the body dissipates a bit which is okay with my because it's stickiness is top notch. This is not a brew you need to keep sipping to reminisce the taste.

Overall: Good brew, and last brew before I officially head out to vacation. Winter is coming my friends, hope you all enjoy. Salud!

750 ml bottle into a tulip glass.

Pours a fairly clear, bright yellow. Two finger head on an average pour, the bright white foam stays around awhile. Lots of foamy lacing. Smell is Belgian yeast, black pepper, straw, light funk, herbal hops- stronger throughout the bottle, wheat, some lemon, a spicy aroma, a little smoke. Taste has a good amount of hop bitterness right up front, yeast, lemon, light malt, some crackers, spices- clove for sure, a little funk, a little earthy on the finish. Dry, refreshing, smooth, good body, the taste lingers, especially the hop bitterness.

This is a really good effort. Good flavor, great aroma, like the hops. Enjoyable and worth a purchase.

Pours a pale straw with well over a finger of head. This offering is quite effervescent and there is also a healthy dose of floaties. The nose is a combination of hops and funk. The flavor follows the nose. There is clearly a hop presence on the finish but the funk cuts into the enjoyment of the hops.
