Notes / Commercial Description:
Ommegang Biere de Mars is a Belgian-style dry hopped amber ale with a bit of magical space dust woven in Brettanomyces bruxellensis, a wild-yeast used in the secondary fermentation. The Brett imparts added tartness, a bit of zing and some farmhouse funkiness.

Biere de Mars reveals a copper-amber body and a frothy white head that builds, clings and stays. Aromas are of malt and grain, clove, fruit and a bit of funk. Flavors are full-bodied with delicate malty sweetness, followed by spicy, peppery yeastiness and Brett-induced funk. Hopping is subtly bitter and aromatic, bumped up a bit by dry hopping. The finish is dry and gently lingering. At 6.5% ABV; it also pairs nicely with spicy foods such as barbecue.

After opening the wire cage and stopper, it was easy to pick up the aroma of the spices. The pour was real creamy with a nice golden head. My first sip reminder me between the Ommegang WITT and SouthHampton Grand Cru.

It was sort of a cross between a Wheat and Spiced beer.

It was so easy to drink, smooth with a nice lasting taste

Brewery Ommegang Biere De Mars Batch #3 November
2008. 6.5% alcohol by volume corked and caged.
Cork popped with massive air behind it... poured into Ommegang oversized wine glass.

A- This beer pours a firey red-orange fluid that produces very little head if any... tiny bits of lacing stick to the sides.

S- Cloves and musty barnyard funk are upfront with a mild scent of sweet malts showing in the nose.

T-M- Strange enough there is a sour quality to this beer. Very slight upfront sour apple that is followed by a musky clove and faint all spice. Malt sweetness is in the backbone. Kinda bland but a good all and all flavor for a beer. Mouthfeel is smooth and refreshing with very little carbonation to prevent a water-like feel.

D- Hey its a drinkable beer but for the style im not to sure it hits but in its own way it has a special flavor that makes it great.

A 750ml bottle poured into a tulip glass. The beer was a hazy orange color with a thick white head. It had that slightly barnyard aroma, and also had a sweet, spicy aroma. Taste was mostly fruity, with some cinnamon and allspice. I thought it was a bit on the fizzy side, but still very enjoyable.

Corked and caged bottle with an easy twist-out cork. Hazed amber body is topped by a large almond head. Generous patch lacing.

Pastoral aroma with some barnyard funk. Initially, I got some perfumey florals, almost like a lilac sachet, which quickly subsided into herbal hops, white pepper, and a hint of caramel. A bit of yeastiness adds some interest. Very inviting!

Mouthfeel reveals a light medium body with a spritzy carbonation. Slight chalkiness fits right in. Very pleasant pastoral ambience.

Taste is somewhat funky, but the brett character has yet to peak. Herbal/Floral hops add a welcome dryness. Vague fruitiness offers up hints of kiwi and white grape. White pepper adds a nice edge. Malt is hardly noticed but I'm sure there is an ample presence as this seems superbly balanced all the way through.

Wow! More complex than Hennepin and much more enjoyable. As drinkable as a better Fantome. Exceptional rendition of one of my favorite styles. Curious to know how this one will be with six months in the cellar. What a pleasant surprise, even at this young age.

Batch 2, October 2008. Typical Omme presentation, Belgian bomber, caged and corked $11.99 @ De Cicco's in Ardsley, NY. Pours dark peach amber, cloudy, light tan head, better then decent retention and leaves plenty of splattered gobs of lace. Bit o' funk, and sweet fruity spice in the nose. Spiced up up front, lightly horsey in the midsection and quite dry and puckering in the finish. Imminently crisp, tasty and refreshing. Yum...great accompaniment to light and spicy foods of all sorts. Fine addition to the Ommegang family.

Appearance: red/brown in color, noticable sediment, one inch head, high carbonation

Smell: granny smith apple and hay

Taste: granny smith apple, some funk, fresh cut grass, and hay

Mouthfeel: high carbonation, smooth, dry, medium-light bodied

Drinkability: This is excellent for the style and one of my favorites from the brewery. Not the most complex, but very smooth. Some of the flavors are subtle, but they work well together. Outside of Three Philosophers and maybe Hennepin, this is the Ommegang beer I will go for.

Pours a nice orange color with a huge, white head. There was a lot of yeast sediment in the bottle that poured into the glasses.

Aroma is a malty sweetness with a lot of fruitiness mixed in. There is even a little funkyness in the aroma. Very inviting.

Taste is a mix of fruit and funk. There is brett in the beer and it is definitely in the flavor, though not overpowering. I didn't get much hoppiness in the flavor.

There was a lot of carbonation in this beer which goes very well with this style. Overall, a very drinkable beer. My favorite so far from Ommegang.

750 ml bottle, batch 3, nov 2008 at Happy Gnome. By the time you pour the yeast in the bottle the large white head has subsided and you are left with a hazy light ruddy brown brew. Aromas of tart lemons with a floral character and a zingy spiciness on top of the light toasted sweet malt. Taste is like the aroma but noticeably without much funk or sour. Mouthfeel is very dry with plenty of carbonation zing in the finish.
Overall-no idea how this has changed in 6 years but this beer doesn't have much Brett funkiness or much sourness but is dry with a clean crisp finish and is pretty tasty.

Per the neck of the bottle, this is Batch 3 November 2008

Poured from a corked and caged 750ml bottle into a standard pint glass. Moderate pour yields 3 fingers of slightly off white head consisting of large bubbles. Active head falls quickly with audible "fizz". Not much in the way of lace. Color is a light amber with fine suspended particulate.

Nose- sort of a sweet orange zest, but not from hops. Lemon rind. An interesting spice to the nose, almost a potpourri quality.

Taste- Dry and spicy. Some dry lemon, and orange zest. Very mild, and slightly tart. Peppery spice, mild musty gym soaks, by no means over powering. Slightly puckers the mouth. Very dry, spicy. No presence of alcohol.

Mouthfeel- Very dry, tart, active carbonation.

Drinkability- Very drinkable, keeps you interested.

Pours a bright amber orange hue with a lively carbonated off white head, again amazing looking brew from Ommegang. It definitely looks like something brewed in Belgium, and this one happens to be one of my favorites a Belgian Pale with Brett added to the mix. Lacing is perfect fine even just adds to the visual appeal of this beer. As you add the final dregs of yeast into your glass it looks like a slurry of yeast particles suspended, with time they all settle back to the bottom of the chalice in this case a nice conical shaped flute from Allagash. Almost a brett milkshake sitting at the bottom of the glass, I believe the label encourages that we don't drink this but I can't resist. Gotta have my B vitamins.

Aromatics offer up some definite barnyard wild funk infused malts and hops, with malts that are mildly sweet offering up fresh baked biscuit layers and a touch of drizzled honey toast. Some weird tones come through with a touch of green apple hidden in band aids, not offensive rubber but definitely wild phenols from this yeast strain. Bottled back in October of 2008 as batch #2, I believe if fresher the hops would add more pungency, although I know they are there it's hard to pick them up in detail. Brettanomyces also takes some time to get funky and I believe this beer has achieved it's mission. If I had to throw a label on the hop character in the nose it would be a delicate herbal mint flow. Adding the last bits of yeast into the mix creates quite the artisan bread combination.

Flavors collide with slight caramel and biscuit malt combinations with peppery fruit spiced finish, clove, and funky barnyard tones, again green apple blends onto the palate from backyard. But anytime I get to compare a beer to the likes of Orval I feel blessed and this is one that has everything right from carbonation levels to pure complexity. Yet the beer is so easy to drain and doesn't kill too many brain sells with booze. As you reach near the end of the bottle you will notice a perfume like exotic accent on the whole flavor profile with more fresh baked bread yeast qualities, my last Ommegang brett experience was unbelievable as well and that would be Ommegedon. That was one of those O face beergasm brews when I first tried it while workin at Bocktown and going to the first Steel City Big Pour.

Mouthfeel has been effervescent fulfilling yet lighter bodied and substantially filling, really enjoyable to try an American Belgian style ale that isn't completely cloying for the most part alot of the dubbels and trippels that show up tend to be over attenuated with heavy residual sugars and sweetness. However this one finishes dry and spicy with a peppery kick to it.

Drinkability overall is excellent one of those challenging brews that add so much complexity and enjoyment to your everyday beer drinking experience, a got to anytime I see this anywhere. Excellent quality Belgian style pale ale, moderate alcohol makes for great session beer to be shared with friends or solo you be the judge.

This is my first beer containing brett. It was an interesting experience, bier poured into a tulip.

A- The beer just looks amazing, huge head that never really goes away. Nice and rocky too. The color is a hazy burnt orange, the head is bone white.

S- I smell the funk, not to strong though. It sorta comes and goes, it hits the nose right away then all I can smell is a spicy saison. The funk fades with the head also.

T- Not nearly as exciting as I hoped. Not much of this funk I keep expecting. The taste felt like it wanted to go sour but it was unsatisfying when it never did. But the extremly dry bitterness was pleasant and refreshing.

M- Nice light mouth feel, the carbonation is very light.

D- Not bad drinkability, nothing that makes it awfull. However I was expecting much more for what I paid ($12) for. Overall a decent beer, I'm considering getting another one and putting it away for a year or two.

750ml corked and caged brown bottle, purchased at Bruisin' Ales in Asheville, NC, poured into a tulip/flute.

A: Pours a golden copper with some hazy depth. Two fingers of off white head forms and holds for a bit before falling to a thick skim. A bit of lacing.

S: A bit of farmy brett funk with a light and pleasant Belgian candi sweetness. A touch of sour/tart fruit in the back. Pleasant, soft maltiness.

T/M: The brett is pretty light, just a little mustiness with very light tart fruit in the back. Nice sweetness between the soft bready malts and Belgian sugar. The body is medium to medium light with good carbonation that makes it feel very light on the tongue. Some additional dryness which I'd guess is coming from the brett.

D: Definitely would have liked to see more funk and sour but a decent beer without having much. Drinks very easy and is hitting the spot after today's hot and humid day.

Batch #1 Nov. 2008 750 ml. caged cork bottle poured into stemless balloon wine glass.

A--Beautiful reddish caramel body with loose fizzy cola-colored one finger head that died quickly without lace. Careful pour really brought out the radiance and picture-perfect for the style hues in the body.

S--Medicinal, mostly spicy with some herbal qualities. I got a lot of clove, which was weird and not what I expected. The spice is almost incense-like, which to me is more reminiscent of a weizenbock than a BDG. Some icky astringent rubbing alcohol in there that doesn't belong, which is almost masked by slight hay and marmalade (English hops?). Where's the funk? Where's the noise?

T--See above questions. Meh. This is more clove and cinnamon, more winter and fruitcake than spring and fiddleheads. Reminds me of Thiriez's Biere De Noel, itself a weird beer for its respective season, but that's another story for another day. The message here is more medicine by way of spice, some cardamom/clove/cinnamon thing going on, as well as some sweet/tangy orange and lemon notes. Dry hopping is present on the back end of the flavor profile in a really nice way--soft but assertive enough to tug out some malt notes, which are in the main sorely lacking. The damp earth and yeast are nearly absent from this beer.

M&D--Mouthfeel=yuck. Watery, thin with waaay too much carbonation for this guy. Save the champagne stuff for lagers and maybe saisons. Drinkability? At 12 bucks a 750 for an average at best concoction? Doubtful.

I really wanted to like this beer, as I love the brewery. I am, however, starting to wonder if I wasn't overly impressed with Ommegang early on because I hadn't sampled enough other beers at the time. For a Biere de Garde that's American or, hell, from New York, go with Southampton. Any of theirs beats this sucker by about three lengths.

Well, this is my first American sour, I love it.
There is quite a bit of sediment in the bottle which is labeled batch #2 Oct. 2008.
Poured carefully into a large wine glass, even then a 2" head appears and hangs on till done (well thats not much of a measurement ,as after my first taste the end came pretty quick.)
Slightly hazy amber.
Smell is well, I have to use what I've read here, Funk? Earthy?
Not overpowering at all, in fact nice! Like a damp haystack?
I was expecting a lot worse, I am surprised.
Taste is an epiphany, Sour cherries come to mind, then some malt like a good lager, then hops kind of like a good pale ale.
Well I guess that's what everyone means by complex.
Wow, I can't wait to explore more of this, BRAVO!

Bright amber color with nice head poured into my tulip glass.
Sour aroma reminiscent of green apple.
Not nearly as tart on the tongue. Some initial tartness with some sweeter malt. But a whole lot o' funk in there as expected from a Brett beer.
Super clean finish, and quite drinkable as well.

25.6 oz. corked and caged bottle into a Brooklyn tulip.

Appearance: Beautifully hazy slightly darker-than-usual peach amber color, with an off-white, mildly mocha-colored head, and a few raindrops as far as lacing goes toward the top.

Smell: A nice combination of amber sweetness and Brett sourness, coupled with some bright citrus aromas too, along with some peach and possibly strawberry.

Taste: I really like the Brett combining with the darker and more candied fruit flavors here. Initial puckering sourness goes away in a flash, then lingers in the end, while in the middle the darker fruit flavors come in, along with some maple syrup and toffee, with dark cherries being prominent here among the fruits, along with some lighter candied orange or marmalade. By the end, it steers into a more dry range, but with lingering candied fruit in the distance.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, with not necessarily creamy carbonation, but with enough to not make it too spritzy, but hold up to everything. Stays pretty effervescent the whole time, even after many pours from the bottle.

Drinkability: Another solid effort from Ommegang, and a brew, especially for the QPR at around $6-$7 a bottle, you really can't go wrong here. Quality all around. Will be buying a few of these next time I see it.

Huge two-finger head is rocky and clearly capable of leaving thick walls of styrofoam-ish lace on the glass. Color is a delightful orange-leaning amber, exhibiting mild haze and lively bubbles.

The aroma, pungent and earthy yet having a kind of crispness, promises funkiness in abundance. Along with that comes fresh apple skins and various juicy fruits like pear and peach.

That Brett funk is present in the flavor, but hardly overwhelming. More fruit-focused than anything, with various apple varieties, white grape, pear and star fruit dancing around. Also quite tart; light white pepper snap in back. This is very dry and aggressively carbonated, nearly edging into champagne territory. (I cannot say or even write "champagne" without thinking of SNL's/Christopher Walken's The Continental. Hail!)

The dryness and carbonation take over the textural impression...airy and on the lighter side, although it has just the mildest bit of stickiness. Bitter orange and citrus rind hoppiness lingers in the finish.

Nice, enjoyable, a well-made thing for sure...but between the dryness, aggressive carbonation and ultra-crispness, not the greatest Ommegang or Belgian-style beer out there. This would probably be best while sitting on the deck on a hot summer day, which is totally out of reach right now...

Mildly and oddly (that's the style) spicey Belgian with a barnyard nose. Very pleasant body with soapy white head. The taste is more than decent and the beer is drinkable over a meal, but I would not seek it out again. OK for the style. Above average mouthfeel, though lightly acidic.
