Style: Bière de Garde

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Ommegang Biere de Mars is a Belgian-style dry hopped amber ale with a bit of magical space dust woven in Brettanomyces bruxellensis, a wild-yeast used in the secondary fermentation. The Brett imparts added tartness, a bit of zing and some farmhouse funkiness.

Biere de Mars reveals a copper-amber body and a frothy white head that builds, clings and stays. Aromas are of malt and grain, clove, fruit and a bit of funk. Flavors are full-bodied with delicate malty sweetness, followed by spicy, peppery yeastiness and Brett-induced funk. Hopping is subtly bitter and aromatic, bumped up a bit by dry hopping. The finish is dry and gently lingering. At 6.5% ABV; it also pairs nicely with spicy foods such as barbecue.

Two and a half fingers of fast crackling tan bubbles fade quickly leaving no lace behind. The body is a deep amber tone with noticeable sediment floating scattered throughout. On the nose you get Belgium yeast, vanilla, mellon and some sour citrus rinds, almost lemony. Nose is soft but nicely complex. Enters the most with a snap of slight bitter and fruity thing that is oh so slightly sour. This quickly yields a dryness on the palate that reminds me of a nice Belgium pale ale. Some soft phenols arrive mid-palateand leave banana like esters on the back of the tongue. Mouthfeel turns more dry as you drink. Soft and slight are the words best used when describing this beer. It is very approachable, but not what I was looking for in terms of Brett action.

750 ml bottle, batch 3, nov 2008 at Happy Gnome. By the time you pour the yeast in the bottle the large white head has subsided and you are left with a hazy light ruddy brown brew. Aromas of tart lemons with a floral character and a zingy spiciness on top of the light toasted sweet malt. Taste is like the aroma but noticeably without much funk or sour. Mouthfeel is very dry with plenty of carbonation zing in the finish.
Overall-no idea how this has changed in 6 years but this beer doesn't have much Brett funkiness or much sourness but is dry with a clean crisp finish and is pretty tasty.
