Game Of Thrones: King In The NorthGame Of Thrones: King In The North
Notes: King in the north - a beer for Jon - is an imperial stout aged for over six months in bourbon barrels. The beer is black as pitch, with aromas of bourbon and chocolate. A fitting companion for a long dark night. "King In The North" is our final expression of what a court brewer would offer a noble lord or lady: perfect balance and pure drinking pleasure.

A beer for Jon Snow, if Jon Snow drank beer. Hah! Maybe now that he's free and with the Wildlings?

Appearance: Black. Thick tan head and minor lace.

Aroma: Malty roasty fruit, coffee, cocoa and bourbon. Big and rich.

Taste: Lots of deep, dark cocoa and heavy-duty roastiness here. Finishes with a pretty heavy bourbon warmth. Superb brew for cold nights.

A: The beer is close to being jet black in color. It poured with a short beige colored head.
S: Light aromas of vanilla and bourbon are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of dark roasted malts with hints of bourbon and vanilla from the barrel aging. The roasted malt flavors linger into the finish.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied and a little smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer drinks very easily for something that is 11% abv as it hides any traces of alcohol from the taste. The only drawback is that the bourbon isn't that prominent in the smell or taste.

Shout it out in your best Greatjon Umber impression: "King in the North!"

Strong roasted flavor as if malts were scorched by Drogon himself (Dracarys!!!), not much barrel, adequate mouthfeel.
Got a bottle to drink a few months back, saved another one for the GoT Season 8 premiere, and sipped the last bottle this week while my heart raced watching the Battle of Winterfell. Yes, all men must die, but all men can choose to drink (and know things!), and you can know that this beer might not be a great beer, but it's a fine choice with an appropriate tie-in to a show I've enjoyed immensely and will be sad to see end in a few weeks. I'm upstate NY born and raised with a soft spot for Ommegang, and even though I have a nagging sense I'm getting duped by Duvel Moortgat and some kind of circular beer-entertainment corporate vortex, I like to imagine Northerners sipping a strong stout while Winter is Coming - to hell with King's Landing and their preferred Dornish wine.

Well, GoT geeks gotta geek... "And so his review has ended."

Pours dark translucent brown into my proprietary Ommegang Game of Thrones goblet, appearing black in the glass under an incredibly tall head of dark tan foam... As the foam subsides, leaving lace lines clinging to the glass interior, a dark cola-colored edge is apparent on the sip...

From the nose to the taste, it is immediately clear that this will be my favorite Game of Thrones release from Ommegang... Aromas of bourbon and wood, vaporous with tones of vanilla, preview a classic bourbon barrel stout flavor profile... While the body is relatively thin - something of a medium-weight, it is an acceptable feel and not uncommon to the stylings... Impressions of bittersweet dark chocolate malts are aired out with light boozy wood notes... Light cocoa and molasses sweetness mediates the bitter char and tannic wood-notes, and presents a refined and enjoyable ale, suitable for both the King in the North and Beer Advocates from here to Westeros... An $11.99 sticker at Total Wine makes this an approachable buy, too...

It a stout. And not a great one. It doesn't do anything for me as I am not a fan of straight forward dark bitter with no character. I prefer something extra, like Founder's KBS or CBS...or even more so, Dieu du Ciel!'s Peche Mortel and New Holland's Dragon's Milk.
This one leaves me indifferent, if not downright turned off. And it's overpriced to booth.

The first stout I had and the last stout I want to drink before I die.

I originally got this to celebrate the new season of Game of Thrones and I was hooked. I am no beer reviewer and have no experience in knowing what I am exactly tasting or seeing but this stout was a perfect 5 in my book. The head is my favorite part, thick, large with a deep tan color full of flavor and sticks around for a while. The flavor of the body was malty with chocolate notes.

That’s about all I can say other then I am conflicted whether to open up my last bottle in a year or more. or to just save it knowing I have a unopened bottle to cherish.

Certainly does not taste like 11%, much smoother than that. Subtle chocolate flavor, more yeasty, malt, and burnt. A good Imperial stout but I cannot call it exceptional, it would have to have more complexity for that, and I expect more from Ommegang.
