The Belgian-Scotch brewing connection dates to WWI, when thousands of Scotsmen spent years in Belgium. To satisfy the new customers, Belgian brewers learned to brew lighter "Scotch" style ales. This fine Ommegang ale uses heather tips and a wee bit of smoked malt to bring the taste and aroma of Scotland to the forefront. "Malty, full body, dark, slightly smoky, with heather notes. Flavorful and aromatic, with a gentle complexity and easy-going finish."

2/23/11 review session hosted by Cdkrenz reviewed from notes- drizzm sample:
Poured from a pint glass this brew was a very dark amber color with a wonderful 2 finger head that lasted well into the sampling. The aroma was of very light smoke, some very earthy and bready tones were present. The taste had a strong malt presence along with the mild smokey flavor accustom to a scotch ale. This was a medium body brew with good carbonation to help the flavors mingle. Nice brew but not the best of the session.

A - Pours an incredibly murky dark brown with touches of dark ruby. Forms a half finger of quickly dissipating light tan head.
S - Literally smells like you mixed a high quality Belgian tripel or quad with a scotch ale.
T - Exactly as it smells.
O - A damned good and interesting take on the scotch style. V - Good.
