Notes: The Belgian-Scotch brewing connection dates to WWI, when thousands of Scotsmen spent years in Belgium. To satisfy the new customers, Belgian brewers learned to brew lighter "Scotch" style ales. This fine Ommegang ale uses heather tips and a wee bit of smoked malt to bring the taste and aroma of Scotland to the forefront. "Malty, full body, dark, slightly smoky, with heather notes. Flavorful and aromatic, with a gentle complexity and easy-going finish."

750ml poured into an Ommegang chalice.

A - Pours a deep, dark red with a cloudy, floating haze in the middle of the glass. To the sides and beneath this haze, however, is a nice clarity. About 2-fingers of tan head on this beer with good retention. A good bit of carbonation can be see rising from the etched bottom of the glass. Lacing is very good and nearly covers the entire glass.

S - The nose on this is nice with subtle complexities dancing around. I am getting the Scottish influence first, with a bit of the heather, caramel, and malt sweetness. Then the Belgian influence comes in through the yeast, giving it an enjoyable dichotomy. Some fruits and candied sugar make up the back-end of the nose.

T - This 'blend' of styles gives the flavor an interesting spin that I found myself liking quite a bit. As in the nose, the flavor starts with some malt sweetness, this time imparting a 'wee bit' of smokiness, like a kiss from the Islay region of Scotland. The heather as well is subtle but noticeable. From there the Belgian yeast comes through and prevails throughout the finish, bringing some spice, breadiness, and sugary fruits, especially apples and raisins. The finish is sweet and somewhat bitter.

M - Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with good carbonation. Relatively full-bodied with a smooth edge to it. Somewhat dry finish.

D/O - Drinkability is moderately high. The Belgian side of this beer adds a creative new angle to the Scottish side, while also cutting down on the malt sweetness and caramel. Easily drinkable and inoffensive, I enjoyed my time with this beer.

Reviewed from tasting notes.

Hazy darker brown color, one and a half fingers of foam that lasts for about a minute, leaving minimal lacing behind on the inner surface of the glass. Smells of caramel, toffee, milk chocolate, and just a garnish level touch of peat smoke. Flavor contains all of these elements and also a medium strength nutty element and some suggestions of plums... Body is smooth and silky, medium carbonation. If I had to criticize something, it would be that I had a hard time finding the Heather promised within. It only appeared as a ghostly faint presence once allowed to warm up.

Single finger head with scattered lacing in a murky amber body. Nice lacing. Aroma is toffee, caramel, candy sugar and sour cherry. Flavor follows with cherry, caramel malts, candy sugar and toasted malts. Mollasses and toffee late in the finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Nice maltiness for the style. Light on the hops. A few surprise notes for the style.

750ml bottle, split between 2 stemless red wine glasses. Nice loud pop of cork.
Pours with a nice 1/2" head, fades quick. High carbonation. Clear, deep, dark red in color. Smells like a sweet red wine. Berries, and booze, like red licorice and cotton candy sugary aroma. First sip carries over sparkling grape juice and scotch. Fruits get more bitter as it warms like cassis berries or pomegranate. Best quality is the undertones of spicy wood on the tongue.
Feels very watery.
Not bad, but for Ommegang, definitely not one of their best, was much better before it started warming.

Had from a bottle. Poured a reddish brown color with a nice white head that retained well. Small amounts of lacing. Aroma was sweet, earthy...a bit of of a raisin smell as well. Toasty. Tasted of cherries, toffee, spices, sweetness and raisins. Well-balanced, but each flavor was minimal for the most part...could have been more complex. Perhaps TOO blended in flavor.

Medium mouthfeel with light carbonation. Drinkable, but I wouldn't have it again. One bottle was good enough!
