Ommegang's brewers spent several years refining their ideas of what a "perfect" tripel would be. In the original style, a Belgian tripel is a golden ale, from 8.5% to 10% ABV, with fruity flavors and aromas coming from the yeast. Tripels are simply brewed, but with great attention to detail. Ommegang Tripel Perfection goes beyond the exquisite attention to detail and adds spices to subtly enhance aromas and flavors. The result is a fine ale honoring Belgian brewing tradition, while also expanding on it in the new Ommegang tradition.

Its Ommegang + its a Tripel = Its damn good! Pours a clear gold with a decent foamy head. All the aromas and flavors you would expect, done to near perfection, hence the name. Yeast, malt, bread, orange, coriander and sugar. Its all there. Just the right amount of sweetness. Alcohol is there but not dominant, nicely carbonated.

Appearance: Pours a rusty gold with a big white frothy head that retains well.

Aroma: Wheat, honey, orange peel, malt sweetness.

Taste: Orange peel and sugars lead the way. Booze burn, malt sweetness. Some candy-like flavor. Tangerines. Possibly honey, as in the nose.

Mouthfeel: A slow drinker, in part due to the high ABV.

Overall: Good strong ale. Complex and full of flavor. Pretty boozy, too.

I could have sworn I'd reviewed this before. Maybe I just didn't type up my notes yet.

BOTTLE: 1 pint 9.4 fl oz. Brown glass. Branded hood-and-wire cap over a cork. Appealing gold label design with art depicting two arrows in the center of a target (perfection, get it? But hey, shouldn't there be three arrows?)

8.90% ABV. "Belgian-style golden tripel ale."

HEAD: ~6-7cm in height. Off-white head. Soft appearance. Slightly creamy, with a silky smooth consistency. Apt for a tripel, with ~10 minute lacing that doesn't betray its high ABV in the slightest.

BODY: Murky dull copper. No visible yeast/lees within.

The head exceeds the body in execution, and the overall result is a decent looking tripel. The lack of vibrance in the body really holds it back; one would expect a glorious vibrant gold given this is a Belgian style tripel brewed by a Duvel-owned brewery.

AROMA: Soft wheat, coriander, pale malt, spicy Belgian yeast, dried orange peel, candied orange peel, bright floral hop aromatics, oats (I think?), tangerine peel. I don't find the licorice root mentioned on the label, but I consider this a good thing as I hate licorice.

Suggests a wonderfully soft subtly executed ale lacking the booziness that plagues so many inferior attempts at the style. Boasts a great Belgian yeast aroma, getting me excited for a true-to-form tripel from one of our best Belgian style breweries.

Aromatic intensity is average. A very enticing aroma, all things considered.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Orange creamsicle flavours are complemented beautifully by a soft silky mouthfeel, making this 8.90% ABV surprisingly refreshing in spite of its medium body. Perfectly carbonated; I suspect bottle conditioning is to thank.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or wet. Has a classic smooth wet texture and I suspect oats helped give this its lighter body and increased smoothness.

The taste has many subtleties, but citrus from dried bitter orange peel and candied orange peel is prominent. Soft wheat gives this its approachable malt backbone, complemented by (I think) oats. Unmistakable Belgian yeast character is indicated by the subtle yet intricate saccharomyces cerevisiae spiciness and muted esters. Yeasty spice and coriander seed intermingle, lending this a bit of a prickly feel. I wouldn't call it fruity per se, but the orange peel would be detected by any discerning drinker in a blind tasting even though it's seamlessly integrated in the rest of the build as a whole.

And a whole this brew is, boasting impressive cohesion and unity of flavour, exceeding the sum of its parts. Depth of flavour is quite good, and flavour duration and intensity are aptly moderate as demanded by the style's conventions.

There's a nice harmony of texture and taste at work here, and the beer's key strengths for me are its softness and its wheat/orange peel one-two punch. That it isn't boozy is a miracle already, elevating this well above the pack of mediocre tripel style ales.

OVERALL: Sometimes I forget how terrific Ommegang is at emulating Belgian styles, and then I try almost any in their lineup and I'm instantly reminded. Normally I'm wary going into tripel style ales given their propensity for booziness (I guess it's something about that highly attenuated Trappist yeast), but Ommegang reigned this one in, delivering a devilishly drinkable tripel that bests even many Belgian brewed expressions of the style. In terms of American-brewed tripel style ales, this is up there with the likes of Logsdon, Russian River, and Victory for me - and that's tough company to rival. Easily a Top 15 tripel for me currently (regardless of country of origin), and absolutely worth trying once - even if Ommegang has other Belgian ales I'd sooner reach for. No, it isn't the titular "perfection," but it's quite tasty.

Poured from a cork'n'cage bomber into a tulip

L: Pours a nearly clear medium golden color. Three fingers of creamy white head. Lots of sticky lacing.

S: Lemon grass and honey. Belgian sugars.

T/F: Complex and delicious... Belgian yeasts and sugars throw a lot at the palate. Summer fruits and honey... caramel... candy sugar and banana. A little spice thrown in for good measure. Carbonation was on point and the finish was sticky and semi-sweet.

O: Slightly sweeter than a usual tripel, but this really worked for this beer. Just delicious, and Ommegang knows their way around the Belgian styles. Recommended.

I'm really loving these new Ommegang bottle shapes. This is a beautiful ale on the pour. Fantastic feel and texture. Sweeter than say your authentic tripels. Still carries a nice balance and the yeast strain is off the charts delicious. But this for me leans more toward those thick bodied Belgian strong pale ales. It's very well balanced considering it's sweetness and makes for the absolute perfect after dinner ale. It's big bodied with rich fruity esters, beautiful aromatic yeast strain and sweet candied malt. Most breweris would have this turned on its head, but Ommegang does brilliantly in making a perfectly balanced Belgian ale that keeps its fruit filled flavor and spice with a bunch of sweetness. It carries some hints of booze along the palate as it warms, but it's as close to Belgian perfection as any US made ale I've had. They hit it dead on with the perfection part though it's more of a strong pale ale than tripe for me. But hell, do we really care what style liquid it is as long as it's as grand as this?

750mL corked and caged bottle, bottled on 11/12/2014, best before 11/2017. Shared with the Mrs., with my portion in a Tripel Karmeliet glass.

Appearance: Translucent orange amber color. Lots of fine bubbles coming up through the glass to replenish the persistent rocky off-white head. Thick strands of persistent lacing noted. Great looking beer.

Smell: Yeasty, floral, herbal, with a barest hint of phenol.

Taste: Lots of flavors going on - Belgian yeast, noble hops, orange peel, bready malt, with a mild lingering herbal + citrus bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: Highly carbonated but not fizzy. Scrubs the palate clean and has a nicely airy mouthfeel with a good smooth thickness underneath.

Overall / Drinkability: A perfectly balanced tripel and well-named. Dangerously drinkable - I was noting the potency about halfway through my glass. I would not have minded another glass in which case I would have been in serious trouble this stuff is so smooth. A very delightful tripel and I'll have to see if I can pick it up again.

Pours a hazy amber color with a thick one and a half inch white head that is very well retained , but leaves little lacing.
Smell is pretty mild, with some lemon, yeast and spice notes. Taste is slightly sweet with yeasty bread, apples, pears, cloves, slight pepper and malt flavors. Finishes dry. Medium to heavy bodied with high carbonation. Flavors get much better as the beer warms a little. A very good example of a Belgian Tripel.

Bright and snappy aroma of citrus, lemon grass, coriander and cloves. White grapes blended with the signature Belgian yeast. Aroma similar to Westmalle, only spicier. Flavor begans with sweet white grapes morphing into a dry white wine. Subtle sugar notes. Spices come to life mid drink blending with the yeast and clove character. Grassy hop. Finishes dry with a medicinal aftertaste. Medium body. Smooth carbonation. A well executed tripel which holds up against many Belgian examples.

Pour hazy amber with thick white foamy head from 750ml bottle. Smells initially a bit skunky then metallic, pear, apple. Taste is sweet light fruits up front (apple/pear), metallic twang to the sweetness and with a pepper end note balancing out the fruit. Medium bodied, significant carbonation adds to the tang and keeps from becoming syrupy.
Overall, pretty good tripel – but not so good as to justify the pricepoint, and not the best representative of the genre. I wouldn’t go out of my way to find this beer, but wouldn’t turn it down if it was the only thing available (or if somebody handed me a free beer).

11 ounce pour - $10.00 at Taco Mac in Woodstock, Georgia.

Appearance: Deep golden-hued body, lightly hazed beneath a fine, white head.

Smell: A sweetish, perfumy, heavily phenolic bouquet with its boosting spices, some citrus and some addling alcoholic updrafts.

Taste: Honeyed maltiness, lightly bready. Moderate sweetness of blonde syrups. Slightly tangy in taste. Generously phenolic, abundant in clove, coriander and pepper. Bitterish, redolent dried citrus rinds. A little harsh and biting in the booze factor leading to a somewhat sharp finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body, fairly smooth on the tongue. Medium carbonation.

Overall: For me, it fell more than a bit short of its boastful moniker and price-tag.

Look: A chaotic swirling rush of carbonation rises to the head of this brew. The body is a slightly hazy amber color with gilded edges. The head is creamy and leaves consistent lacing.

Smell: Tons of banana esters, ale yeast, licorice, coriander, orange peel, and honey in the aroma.

Taste: The taste is extraordinarily complex in the first place, but as it warms the flavors open up. I get banana, sweet orange peel, licorice, anise, honeysuckle, proofed dough, cake flour, lilac, lavender, unfiltered wiliaiki blossom honey, melon rind, a kiss of rosewater and coriander.

Feel: This brew is so creamy and smooth the finish doesn't even matter. It rinses and lingers simultaneously.

Overall: Another genius brew by Ommegang, which are the undisputed masters of utilizing Belgian yeast to really make the quality ingredients shine.

Primarily orange with a bit of red it in. Large white head that sticks around a bit, and a lot of bubbles from the carbonation.

Smell is a bit subtle, but picking up malt and yeast, as well as some citrus. Maybe hint of pepper as well.

Very fruity up front, more apple and pear than the citrus I expected. There is quite a bit of pepper at the back end, leaving a spicy aftertaste. There is also a bit of alcohol warming, while not fully hidden, no doubt of the abv here.

Fairly thick and full for the style, with a good amount of carbonation.

Very nice take on the style here. The Belgian character of Ommegang really comes through on this one, they did nail the style. It is maybe a bit spicier than I expected, but overall, a very accurate version of one of my favorite beer styles.

L: Fruity nose with sour earthy notes, spice, floral, soft alcohol, citrus.
S: Pours hazy peach tinted gold crowned by a big persistent 3” off white moussey head with a very fine bead.
T: Fruit, spice and alcohol start the attack seasoned by pepper, very soft malts, some citrus, orange, maybe lemon mingling with peach and suggestions of pineapple.
F: Very creamy and moussey in texture, medium light body. Above average to high carbonation but the carbonation is very fine and soft.
O: About as good as it gets, big fruit balanced by bitterness and alcohol.

The flash of gold caught my eye and everything I saw about this beer made me even more excited to try it. Ommegang always brews amazing beers and when I found that this Tripel ONLY comes in this beautiful 750 mL bottle AND was capped with a champagne cork and wire rim I was hooked. The bottle artwork and style makes me want to keep this bottle after I finish it and I will. It has a well-balanced 8.9% ABV and has been fine-tuned over the better part of a decade. I will be glad to review it here.

Look-First let me say that the loud satisfying pop of the cork only led to the mounting excitement and anticipation of all that Ommegang promised to pack within. I poured only mildly vigorously and found the head grew very quickly and lingered and then settled into a medium sized head at a centimeter or two with large bubbles and fine lacing on the glass. The beer itself cascades into billowing wisps of golden yellow liquid kissed by turbulent carbonation immediately after the pour. It settles into a foggy yellow state capped with foam beckoning for a kiss.

Smell-It smells of pilsner malt and English yeast at first. I then get sweet brandy and malts based off so many aromas it is hard to pick them all out. I get pear and delicate tropical fruits like mango, passionfruit, and spiked melon. Very subtle and delicate like a humble elixir promising to pack a punch in the taste, which it does.

Taste-The malts are more present than the nose indicated. Lingering English yeast and bread at first and then immediately giving way to a cacophony of tastes. The flavor is a waltz of candied sweetness like sugarplum, bread pudding, fig, honey-buttered-bread, esters of banana, lemon zest, earthy yeast, clover, coriander, bubblegum, melon, honey, citrus peel orange, licorice, nutmeg, vanilla, ginger, and the alcohol appears late at the end and is soothing mild and refreshing. The taste has such an explosive variety of flavors that I may have missed a few, but with a list like that you truly can’t go wrong with this one. These flavors ebb and flow in wave after wave and finish a bit dry and cool lending to the mild alcohol that makes its appearance center stage and amidst the perfect levels of carbonation.

Mouthfeel-It drinks smooth and refreshing with the right levels of effervescent carbonation.

Overall-This was not just a beer, but an experience. It has so much to offer and everyone should try it. Given the legacy of this beer and the amount of time and effort that went into this variety, I think that this is a top shelf, gold medal brew that will be difficult to beat. Great job, Ommegang and keep them coming!

cloudy yellow orange, thin head that stays. notes of bubble gum belgian yeast and bananas on the nose. taste is a very strong yeast gum, coriander and sweet orange (strong sweet orange aftertaste). the typical tripel flavors, but they seem to come through much more strongly in the beer. very nice!

A: Pours a deep sunny golden color with caramel hues. Hazy. Rocky white head has excellent retention. Chucks of foamy lacing cling to the glass.

S: Smells of Pilsner malt. Sweet, bready, and grainy malt aromas. Yeasty. Pear and some delicate tropical fruits. Lightly medicinal. Soft kiss of grassy/herbal hops. Somewhat delicate on the nose, but in a refined way.

T: Malts show more depth than the nose suggested. Rich and honeyed with grainy, toasty, and crusty notes. Yeasty. Also more medicinal than the nose let on, but not in a bad way. Grassy and floral. Traces of golden raisin and pithy tropical fruits. Lightly peppery with another vague spice flavor. Perhaps grains of paradise? Coriander? Ginger? Alcohol is soothing and easy. Overall bitterness elevates a bit toward the back. Dries into the finish with sweet bready malts and an orange peel flavor.

M: Hefty body with a chewy and rich texture. Pretty big-boned actually. Fine carbonation provides some lift so that the full weight of it never really settles on the tongue. Some soothing alcohol.

O: A very good take on the tripel style. Somewhat bigger in body than many, but it works. In that regard it reminds me a bit of Maredsous Tripel, though it's been some time since I've visited that beer. Unlike Maredsous it keeps an even keel, and deftly balances everything it employs taste-wise. Ommegang uses spicing to great effect in some of their beers, and I think that's the case here too. It's tough to pin down exactly what they're using, but it's not anything that you couldn't mistake as being derived from the fermentation. This is one of the better American-made triples I've come across to date. I'd just like to know why they don't offer it year-round.

Poured from 750mL corked & caged bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: rich golden hue with a moderate haze and strong effervescence. Head is two thick fingers of pillowy off-white foam that sticks around good and long. Great.

Smell: big, sweet malt with a huge hit of pear aroma and a dash of apple too. This is what I love about the style, and Triple Perfection really delivers here.

Taste: sweet with a big pear and apple hit right up front followed by a bit of a syrupy finish, some alcohol heat and a somewhat higher bitterness than I'm used to. That said, the sweetness is not over-cloying and that pear character is just to die for. I love it.

Mouthfeel: big body with a huge carbonation and very satisfying creaminess. Wonderful!

Overall: this is a beer I'm really loving. The alcoholic heat builds a bit upon the palate which affects drinkability, but overall this is a delicious brew.

Enjoyed from the bottle in a snifter. This fine tripel pours a hazy golden with a solid white head that dissipates to a thick ring and decent lacing. Nose of sweet candy sugars, lemon zest, earthy yeast with fruity esters of banana, fresh bread, coriander, and some orange notes. Flavors cascade with light slickness of candy sugars and fruity esters of banana, as well as orange on the back. A medium spicy note of white pepper and coriander lightly sear in the taste from the higher natural carbonation with a mild subtle hop character and sweetness from the malt coming through on the aftertaste finishing lightly dry. Excellent presentation and delivery from a master brewer. Warmth brings more fruity ester notes and a light tartness from the yeast. Would LOVE to have this on tap....need to make a note of that.....hmmmm...think I just did.

A: Pours a dark, somewhat hazy gold with a thick white head that recedes into an even, thin mousse.

S: Aromas of banana, clove, licorice, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, bubblegum, biscuit, white bread, and crackers are underscored by traces of lemon, orange peel, coriander, caramel, and grass.

T: Soft notes of banana, vanilla, sweet cream, minerals, clove, licorice, nutmeg, cinnamon, bubblegum, biscuit, crackers, white bread, caramel, sweet orange peel, lemon rind, green apple, and grass fill the mouth. The finish is spicy and long, allowing the notes of spice, citrus, and bread to linger. The alcohol makes a very late appearance, providing some soothing warmth just as the flavors begin to fade.

M: Full-bodied, smooth, and relatively dry. Carbonation is crisp. Alcohol is very subdued. Easy to drink for an ale of nearly 9.0% abv.

O: This ale is another winner from Brewery Ommegang. I have been wanting to try it for some time, and now that I have gotten the opportunity, I not only find myself wishing that I had tried it sooner, but also that I had gotten a second bottle to put back for a year or two. For fans of the style, this one is definitely worth tracking down while it is still available.

Very nice beer. Appearance is a long lasting thick off-white head, some lace, and a slightly hazy color. Aroma is yeast, wet grain, malt, spice. Flavor is like nose with carbonic tang up front with a bit of sweet that builds along with the bitter and has a long finish. Clean. Great body. Very easy drinking.
