Style: Belgian Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Rare Vos Amber Ale is styled after the smooth, drinkable beers popular in Belgian cafés. It pours a light copper hue, contrasting beautifully with a big, creamy white head. The nose offers orange blossoms and slight spice.

On the palate, the caramel maltiness shines strongly but with little sweetness. The profile leans toward dry fruity (yeast-affiliated), slightly fruity/hoppy with a beguiling spiciness. This complex, medium-bodied beer has a smooth mid-palate and moderate dry finish.

Well-balanced in all elements, it's a mild, mellow brew.

Tarnished copper orange in color with dark red hues and a heavy haze. Aggressive carbonation bubbles stream upward from the bottom of the glass. Poured with a huge, billowy, light tan foam with excellent retention. Aromas of Belgian yeast, sweet candied red apple, light banana, light caramel malt and hints of pepper. Medium bodied with effervescent carbonation, creamy feel through the middle followed by light tartness, and pleasant warmth near the finish. Sweet fruit and caramel malt flavors with mellow peppery esters on the edges. Medium tart, bitterness through the middle followed by caramel malt, earthy hops, light pepper and subdued fruitiness. Finished dryly with yeast, fruit and light caramel malt notes. Nice complexity and a great feel and dry finish.

Pours a cloudy deep orange color with an extremely well retained one inch head that left lacing all the way down the glass. Smells of sweet malts, orange, honey and spices. Taste follows the nose with additional flavors of cloves and yeast. Medium bodied, well carbonated, dry finish and mouth feel.

This is my go to casual beer. I love drinking this when I really want to just enjoy a beer. There is a lot to this one for sure. There is definitely a film at the end of the taste but it is such a unique yet classic Belgium like beer quality to this beer, it’s absolutely fantastic. The color is very attractive and the smell is also good. All around, one of my favorites for sure.

All-around good, wholesome beer. Hearty, without excessive bitterness that comes from overhopping. A bit pricey, but worth it.

Beautiful color, but too much bite on the tongue and too cola-like.

Cloudy colored beer with a slowly fading head. Taste is caramel malts and orange zest. Overall an OK beer that in my opinion you could take or leave.

Poured an active major 3-4 fingered. frothy head into a frosted pilsner glass. Light continuous lacing while drinking. Color is a hazy copper. Smell is earthy and malty. Taste is a robust complexity of dry malt, orange peel and lingering cloves spice. Interesting and bold. The feel is crisp, medium body and decent carbonation. Over all a great Amber with unique character.

Bottle poured into oversized wine glass:

Appearance - Beautiful pumpkin orange, can barely see through the glass. Pretty highly carbonated and a beautiful 1/4 finger head of light cream white.

Aroma - Primarily getting strong orange and maybe a hint of honey.

Taste - Primarily clove and orange, a bit more clove which seems to overpower. There is some slight acidic orange flavor as well, but it's definitely in the background.

Mouthfeel - Dry, a bit flat for the amount of bubbles apparent in the glass.

Overall - Overall this was a decent beer. I felt like it was a bit too clove/spice forward and masked most of the fruit/orange flavor. Though the orange did come out a bit as the beer warmed. Felt as though the acidity didn't quite work well in this beer.
