Style: Quadrupel (Quad)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.60%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Ommegang XV pays homage to the great Trappist ales brewed by monks in the Trappist monasteries of Belgium. Created with deep devotion to the brewing art, using the finest ingredients and made with infinite care, XV is unlike any ale we've ever brewed. Even by our exacting standards Ommegang XV stand alone.

Ommegang XV pours a deep walnut hue, with a ruby highlight, full head, and lively carbonation. The nose is malty and complex. Flavors of toffee and chocolate arise, mingling with molasses and caramel as the ale warms. Fruity esters and hints of raisin follow. The body is full and finishes with creamy smoothness.

Poured from 750 ml corked caged brown bottle into a clear glass tulip. Stored refrigerated at 40F for most of its life.

A: Opaque chestnut brown with 1/2-finger light beige head with a few dots of lace.

S: A huge dark fruit outpouring with raisin, prune, date and light licorice with some coffee and dark chocolate too.

T: The dark malt flavors are a bit lighter than the aroma but still provide medium caramel, fig, prune, and light licorice along with mild spicy yeast character. Mild bitterness.

M: Seems slightly lighter and drier than it should but very drinkable for the abv.

O: A really solid quad but seems middle of the road and not as special as an anniversary beer could be.

"Ommegang XV Reserve Ale is an extraordinary and uncommon ale, even by our refined standards. One year in creation-and brewed but once-Ommegang XV Reserve cekebrates fufteeb years if creating fine Belgian style ales. This celebratory ale honors our ancestry, and pays homage to the world's most desired ales- the legendary trappist ales of Belgium. Like the revered trappist ales, Ommegang XV Reserve is brewed with only the finest ingredients and with devotion and care - creating an ale with strikingly complex aromas and flavors. Deep, dark, and elegant, this ale will delight and satisfy todaym and will age gracefully in the cellar." Brewed in the style of a Belgian Strong Dark Ale, available in 750ml. bottles. This is the fifteenth anniversary release from Ommegang.

Poured from a 750ml. bottle to a tulip glass.

(Appearance) Pours a foamy frothed head of a tan color over a deep caramel brown body. Retention is above average and lacing is light and patchy. 3.75

(Smell) Smooth Belgian bread malts, caramel syrups, candied sugars, rich dark fruit sugars. Undertones of chocolate and roast are subtle and yet both are unique for this style. A slight tang is possibly the only impact of long-term aging, otherwise this beer smells very promising. Potency is moderate. 4

(Taste) The flavor plays up many different characters for a different experience from the aroma. Soft bread malts, candi sugars, light fruit syrups, slightly tangy with a punctuated yeast spiciness and dry finish. Subtle chocolate and roast comes through brightest in the finish. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, lightly chewy, very dry. Carbonation is moderate, generating a medium frothiness and a moderately crisp finish. Body is medium for the style, medium/heavy overall. Balance is slightly fruity esters, drying spiciness over sweet. Alcohol presence is modest and there are no off characters. 3.75

(Overall) A very tasty Belgian Dark Ale, and with a solid malt foundation, generating lots of rich flavors, depth of character and yet a high accessibility, nothing is played up too much. This beer has aged quite well with no major flavor flaws or oxidation present. As a beer, it's not overly memorable, but it does happen to be a solid example of a quality American-brewed dark ale. 3.75

Bottle: Poured a clear brown color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some great lacing. Aroma of candi sugar, dry fruits with candy ester is quite sublime. Taste I also a great mix of candi sugar with some dry fruits notes with some candy-like ester and a slight peppery finish. Body is about average for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Great beer and probably something Ommegang can pull out in their sleep.

Let's start with I'm a die hard stout fan. I thought it smelled fantastic but wasn't impressed with its overall finish. Surprisingly I got it off the clearance rack 4 $10.99. So I thought it was cool. But no where near the rating of outstanding.
