Notes / Commercial Description:
Brewery Ommegang and HBO are partnering on a series of beers inspired by the critically-acclaimed drama Game of Thrones. Launching ahead of the season 3 debut on March 31, Iron Throne, a blonde ale, is the inaugural beer in the series and the result of a creative collaboration between Brewmaster Phil Leinhart and HBO.

“No one enjoys their job more than I do -- producing and developing new brews to delight lovers of fine beer, add to that the opportunity to collaborate on a beer based on the cultural phenomenon of Game of Thrones and exploring ways to make the beer truly reflect aspects from the show. It made us approach development in a completely new way and I think the first edition Iron Throne reveals that. With a Lannister currently on the throne, it made sense to do a delicate, but piercing Golden Blonde Ale with Noble hops. Iron Throne is certainly fair in color and soft in appearance, yet it still possesses a complexity and bite to be on guard for.” -Phil Leinhart, Brewmaster at Brewery Ommegang

Iron Throne pours a slightly hazy honey yellow with a moderate, creamy head on top. The foam dissolves slowly leaving a coating of lace on the glass.

The aroma with bready and spicy. wheat, lemongrass, clove, Flowery notes are also present.

Each sip of this medium bodied beer is soft on the palate with an effervescent fizz. The flavor has nice lemongrass notes balanced with wheat malt. It finishes somewhat sweet with a little spice (pepper, clove) and flower notes. It finishes dry with lingering lemon when gone.

A tasty easy drinking beer with a light 'Belgiany' flavor.

Shared by Jayhawk73. Thanks Jeff.

The beer is golden hued and effervescent with a couple inches of dense, white head. The aroma offers lemons, light spice, peppercorns, wheat. Smells nice. Light and refreshing. A touch of honey with lemons and biscuits. Meyer lemon cookies. A touch of hop bitterness in the finish. I am really enjoying this one.

Poured from bottle into slim chalice. Pours hazy straw yellow with a white two finger head. Smells of Belgian yeast, heavy straw grain, some bananna, some coriander maybe. Very carbonated, taste is dry and a lot like the smell, banana, Belgian yeast, lots of grain, peppery. This is novelty beer and one that tastes pretty good. It's nothing amazing but it's bubbly texture and earthy taste is simple but refreshing.

DATE: OCCASION: binging on Game of Thrones the last few nights, it's time for Naked and Afraid XL--and this beer... GLASSWARE: Chimay 150th chalice... thick, hazy orange amber body... a central eruption of bubbles says something is alive and at work here... the head is a thing of beauty--white-as-Ghost's fur, thick as Tormund's beard, and clinging as the Prince of the Eyre... citric orange and pineapple play with cracker malts... apple and pear suggest a crisp spiciness and a natural sweetness... the palate is the epitome of drinkability, with a frothy head greeting each sip and a lingering sweetness at each finish... a striking balance between dryness and liveliness... as to the flavor, besides the aforementioned aromas, slight nuttiness and vanilla, with a winelike sweetness--such a complex contrast, and yet, so drinkable... as biased as I am--towards the brewery and the novels/shows--there's no empirical data denying this beer's quality, and although it is a one-off, I will not deny seeking this our again if I have the chance...

It's an Ommegang beer, so it's going to be good. From a 750 ml bottle, on to the beer:

Beauty sits in the glass. That velvetey, cream head sits over an inch thick and retains itself very well. The color glows yellowish orange with a godlen hue and visible carbonation bubbles riding alongside the glass. I like the nose; delicate, fruity, and spicy. It has a spiced lemon note, lemon meringue, fresh dough, a dash of nutmeg.

This is a dry and effervescent blonde ale. It starts off with a dry bready note with a yeastiness which delivers a kiss of clove. Soft banana and peppery lemon hit afterwards. It dries up in the aftertaste with a skittle of bitterness and apricot skins. Its mouthfeel is Belgian in character, being light yet uplifting with its well placed lively carbonation.

Respectful blonde ale, no matter what the occasion or celebration. Ommegang didn't try to do too much and it payed off.
