Notes / Commercial Description:
Brewery Ommegang and HBO are partnering on a series of beers inspired by the critically-acclaimed drama Game of Thrones. Launching ahead of the season 3 debut on March 31, Iron Throne, a blonde ale, is the inaugural beer in the series and the result of a creative collaboration between Brewmaster Phil Leinhart and HBO.

“No one enjoys their job more than I do -- producing and developing new brews to delight lovers of fine beer, add to that the opportunity to collaborate on a beer based on the cultural phenomenon of Game of Thrones and exploring ways to make the beer truly reflect aspects from the show. It made us approach development in a completely new way and I think the first edition Iron Throne reveals that. With a Lannister currently on the throne, it made sense to do a delicate, but piercing Golden Blonde Ale with Noble hops. Iron Throne is certainly fair in color and soft in appearance, yet it still possesses a complexity and bite to be on guard for.” -Phil Leinhart, Brewmaster at Brewery Ommegang

750ml Bottle; Corked & caged; 6.5%ABV; No "Bottled on Date"; Acquired Nov./Dec. 2015; Poured into an Ommegang Brew Stem.

A: No doubt as to the bottle conditioning, as with several other Ommegang Brews. POPs like fine Champagne! Pours a beautiful, cloudy, blonde, golden hue, with a 3-finger pure white head that slowly dissapates, leaving lots of lacing on the glass.

N: Yeasty, bready, malty, hoppy, mixed with lemon and orange rind aromas, all very well balanced. ABV is not that great, so it's very well hidden.

T: Slight hoppy bitterness on the front as well as on the finish. Yeast, bread, citrus notes. Fresh orange and lemon rind, without being overwhelming, IMO. Nice balance. Somewhat complex. Alcohol, though low, is very well cloaked, making this brew very easy to drink (I love 750ml bottles for this reason!).

F: Nice mouthfeel. Clean, crisp, refreshing. Semi-dry. Very active on the tungue, due to the bottle conditioning.

O: Brewery Ommegang re-released this brew in autumn 2015. I am very glad they did! This is another VERY fine brew from the Brew Masters at Ommegang! Needless to say, I stocked up on it, just as I did with Three-Eyed Raven! It's clean, refreshing, the citrus element is not overpowering, making this, for me, a very easy brew to drink, and a fine brew to share with others that may not be "into" craft brews (because some may think all craft is heavy, and very strong). If you're still able to find it, I'll encourage you to try it!

A good amount of both orange and lemon peel flavoring here. It tastes like it has a stronger alcohol content than the 6.5% suggests. Pretty good, but when I think of Game Of Thrones, I'd expect a stout or porter.

Pours a nice Golden cloudy hue with fair amount of head. Light smell of citrus. Lots of lemon here on the front end. Closes with a little bitter kick on the end. Not bad but doesn't scratch the surface of some of the better Belgians out there. Decent.

A rustic ale that has the appearance of a good saison. Large and pure white head. Cloudy golden amber liquid. Slow fade leaves decent lacing and a light covering. Nose is excellent. Pilsner malt and honey with light pepper. Apples and faint grape. Floral hops. Taste is a hoppy Belgian pale ale meets saison. Seriously dry, funky and an sharp clean hoppy finish. While there is a malt body with those apple and pear notes they a just enough to balance an excellent hop display. Feel is smooth and creamy while having a crisp and easy drinkabilty. An superb session ale despite the 6.5 percent. I'm diggin' this one.

I am not familiar at all with Belgian Pale Ales, so not sure what's part of the style and what is not. It looked great in the glass and the nose was lovely florals. The taste was wonderful malt and yeast that turned bitter on the finish. Perhaps that is meant to end that way but, to my taste, not where I wanted it to go. It was intriguing enough that I will continue to explore the style.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into an Ommegang Game of Thrones chalice.

A: Pours a crystal clear light golden blonde with some visible bubbly carbonation. Two fingers of foamy white head retains very well, also leaves behind some beautiful lacing.

S: Aromas of light bready malts, honey, lemony citrus, banana, white pepper, as well as a slight clove, and a spicy hop aroma.

T: Flavors of slightly sweet bready malts, honey, banana, and lemon, with a nice citrusy crispness up front. In the middle you find some light pepper, and clove spiciness. Finishes with a crisp hop forward taste that leaves a pleasant lingering aftertaste. Very pleasant to drink.

M: Light bodied with a high amount of carbonation. Very crisp and easy drinking yet has enough body to create a smooth feel and a lingering spiciness.

O: I really like this brew. It is easily one of the best blonde ales I've ever had. I am not typically a huge fan of the style but if this was regularly available it would be a frequent purchase. Very nice and light, it's incredibly drinkable and would be equally fitting on a cold winter night as it would a hot summers day. The aromas are very nice and flavors are great. Overall I hope to get to have this brew again in the future and would recommend grabbing the gift set if you see one around.

I got this 750 mL bottle with a champagne cork and black skirt. This is one of the famous Game of Thrones themed beers and is a delicious 6.5% ABV Blonde Ale ‘fit for kings’.

Look-It pours a delightful golden yellow like the glint of the morning summer sun off Lannister gold. The head comes in thick and full even with a moderate pour. It has a medium haze and relative clarity. The color is absolutely brilliant!

Smell-It smells of lemon citrus and spices as well as yeast and honey malts.

Taste-It has an amazing complex flavor. I get a plethora of citrus flavors like lemon merengue pie, lemon peel zest, orange rind, candy malts, honey suckle, nutmeg, essences of cinnamon, lemon curd, custard, tapioca, bread pudding, Belgian yeast, bubblegum, and noble hops. The finish gives some mild hop component that is subtle among the strong and complex malt backbone.

Mouthfeel-It is slick and chewy as well as silky and regal. It is sharp and crisp and has a huge amount of carbonation throughout giving it a fizzy mouthfeel that tickles the palate and stimulates the taste receptors.

Overall-Of course, this is an excellent beer and I believe it is underrated. I am seeing an average of 3.8 on here and I feel that this variety is absolutely brilliant deserving a world class rating. Cheers! Valar Morghulis!
