Notes / Commercial Description:
Brewery Ommegang and HBO are partnering on a series of beers inspired by the critically-acclaimed drama Game of Thrones. Launching ahead of the season 3 debut on March 31, Iron Throne, a blonde ale, is the inaugural beer in the series and the result of a creative collaboration between Brewmaster Phil Leinhart and HBO.

“No one enjoys their job more than I do -- producing and developing new brews to delight lovers of fine beer, add to that the opportunity to collaborate on a beer based on the cultural phenomenon of Game of Thrones and exploring ways to make the beer truly reflect aspects from the show. It made us approach development in a completely new way and I think the first edition Iron Throne reveals that. With a Lannister currently on the throne, it made sense to do a delicate, but piercing Golden Blonde Ale with Noble hops. Iron Throne is certainly fair in color and soft in appearance, yet it still possesses a complexity and bite to be on guard for.” -Phil Leinhart, Brewmaster at Brewery Ommegang

Pours cloudy gold color with a lot of sediment floating around, and a massive 2-3 finger foamy bright white colored head that was packed with bubbles and faded extremely slowly while leaving craters as it went down. The head left excellent foamy lacing and rings as it went down.

Smells of lemon zest, wheat, biscuit, toasted grains, hay, peppery spices, coriander, sweet buttery toast, light caramel and mild fruity notes. Lots of grains, biscuit and earthy notes which blend for a complex nose where lemon comes out as the strongest aroma.

Tastes like with smells with a malty, caramel sweetness up front, followed by lemon zest, toasted grains, peppery spices, floral hops, orange peel, Belgian yeast and wheat bread toast. The sweetness is kept in check by the spices and some mild hop bitterness. Overall an enjoyable blonde ale.

Served in a flute from 750ml bottle.

Appearance: Cloudy gold color with a super thick white head rising about a notch or so over two finger's length.

Smell: Ligt yeast and malts with hints of lemon skin.

Taste: Light sourness with a citrus like hop feel. Yeast like the scent is righht there.

Mouth: Semi sticky feel, I'm think of a sour dough bread with light zest of citrus.

Overall: Nice grab, held on to it for a while just to watch on an episode of GoT, smooth with descent punch. Salud!

750ml bottle: This one pours a clear, darker yellow color. There is a huge white head on it that leaves some lacing. It has a good nose. Some yeast, banana, clove and other faint spices. The taste is good. Some banana, citrus, spices, clove and earthiness. Nice.

I'm not a blonde ale type of guy. After this beer, I'm still not. It's decent though. Moderate flavor, great carbonation and a decent color. Unless you love blonde ales, I wouldn't go out of my way to buy this.

Very tasty brew. Hearty but bright and refreshing. Citrus tones and sweet fruity finish. Enjoyable beer to accompany a binge session of Game of Thrones or sitting by the fire.

DATE: OCCASION: binging on Game of Thrones the last few nights, it's time for Naked and Afraid XL--and this beer... GLASSWARE: Chimay 150th chalice... thick, hazy orange amber body... a central eruption of bubbles says something is alive and at work here... the head is a thing of beauty--white-as-Ghost's fur, thick as Tormund's beard, and clinging as the Prince of the Eyre... citric orange and pineapple play with cracker malts... apple and pear suggest a crisp spiciness and a natural sweetness... the palate is the epitome of drinkability, with a frothy head greeting each sip and a lingering sweetness at each finish... a striking balance between dryness and liveliness... as to the flavor, besides the aforementioned aromas, slight nuttiness and vanilla, with a winelike sweetness--such a complex contrast, and yet, so drinkable... as biased as I am--towards the brewery and the novels/shows--there's no empirical data denying this beer's quality, and although it is a one-off, I will not deny seeking this our again if I have the chance...

Pours a hazy gold with a voluminous white, bubbly head that leaves plenty of lace down the glass.
The aroma is funky and fruity with banana and clove and cracker.
The taste follows the nose with lemon, banana, clove and funk with a bit of bitter snap at the close.
Mouthfeel is bubbly and cleansing.

"Blonde ale with malty sweetness and a touch of fruity spiciness, Noble hop aromas and notes of citrus, suitable to serve to kings, or pretenders to the iron throne." Brewed in the style of a Belgian Pale Ale, available in 750ml. bottles and on limited draft. Entry #1 in the Game of Thrones collaboration series.

(Appearance) Pours an ivory head of a smooth foam consistency over an aggressively carbonated light amber body with slight sediment but otherwise high clarity. Retention is very good and lacing is moderate and clingy. 4.5

(Smell) Pale malts, grain and softly toasted bread malts with underlying sweetness, the soft light stone fruit character with a drying impact. Potency is mild. 3.5

(Taste) The flavor largely follows the aroma, with a slightly more pronounced malt profile of pale syrups, toasted grains, undertones of fruit juices. Slightly peppery, earthy, delicately spicy. Finishes slightly dry. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, lightly creamy, smooth, slick, medium dry. Carbonation is moderate, generating a medium frothiness and a modestly crisp finish. Body is medium+ for the style, light/medium overall. Balance is slightly earthy, hoppy and grainy bitter over sweet. Alcohol presence is mild and there are no off characters. 3.75

(Overall) I was highly skeptical that an ale as simplistic on the surface as this one would hold up as gracefully as it did. Fortunately, this beer was recently re-released alongside the next entry, so those who missed out on the first entry will get a second opportunity. It's a tasty beer, nothing outstanding but also nothing offensive or out-of-balance. Fairly enjoyable and reasonably priced. Promising first entry in this series. 3.75
