Notes / Commercial Description:
Brewery Ommegang and HBO are partnering on a series of beers inspired by the critically-acclaimed drama Game of Thrones. Launching ahead of the season 3 debut on March 31, Iron Throne, a blonde ale, is the inaugural beer in the series and the result of a creative collaboration between Brewmaster Phil Leinhart and HBO.

“No one enjoys their job more than I do -- producing and developing new brews to delight lovers of fine beer, add to that the opportunity to collaborate on a beer based on the cultural phenomenon of Game of Thrones and exploring ways to make the beer truly reflect aspects from the show. It made us approach development in a completely new way and I think the first edition Iron Throne reveals that. With a Lannister currently on the throne, it made sense to do a delicate, but piercing Golden Blonde Ale with Noble hops. Iron Throne is certainly fair in color and soft in appearance, yet it still possesses a complexity and bite to be on guard for.” -Phil Leinhart, Brewmaster at Brewery Ommegang

Bottled 2/15/13, poured into a snifter

A- pours a bright and clear golden-hay color with a big rocky and foamy white head with good retention, reduces to a solid layer floating on top, leaving patches of lace behind

S- tart lemon with some grainy notes from the grains of paradise, light phelonic notes withb some musty Belgian yeast aromas, fruit notes as well. Aromas are there, but a bit subdued

T- light and fruity with some floral notes, lemon zest, earthy yeasty notes. The finish is lightly tart-yet-dry with more lemon flavor on the linger

M- light bodied with spritzy carbonation creates a fizzy mouthfeel and provides a bubbly finish

O- flavors were a bit more subdued than typically expected from Ommegang. I think it's probably because if the mass audience this is advertised for, which works well. Still a solid, well balanced beer

750ml bottle packaged on 2/6/13, poured into the associated Ommegang Game of Thrones glass
A: Hazy with a color that borders on dark yellow/light orange, with a billowy three-finger head that slowly settles and a steady stream of carbonation coming from the bottom of the glass. Really quite impressive
S: Lemon, herbs, pale malt, a hint of toffee & light hops
T: Mostly light malt and herbs with hints of lemon, light hops, an herbed foccacia finish
M: Light-bodied, medium carbonation, fairly crisp with a noticeable dry herby-malty finish
O: Definitely solid, balanced, decent complexity, with a bit more complexity/intensity it would be outstanding. Definitely more effort than just a marketing play

Poured into a very improper short pint glass (all that was on hand).

A: a nice yellow gold hue, slightly cloudy, with a good head that retained nicely and left lacing upon dissipation.

S: I can pick up citrus, spice, yeast

T: follows the aroma

M: slightly better than average carbonation, and a good mouth feel

O: I found this blonde ale a little different from many of the others I have had in this style. I am not sure what it was that makes it different, but it was not a bad thing. I enjoyed this beer on a cool summer evening at the cottage and it was a pleasant experience. It was my first beer from Ommegang, and it makes me want to try others if I can get them (road trip!).

From notes.

A - Poured golden with strong carbonation. Thick two finger white head. Bright. One finger of retention with a good amount of lace.

S - Orange, zesty, lemon, sweet malt.

T - Sweet malt, honey, yeast, orange, some sweet spice.

M - Strong carbonation, medium body, dry finish with some orange.

O/D - Nice Belgian Blonde. Nothing outrageous or out of the ordinary, but I enjoyed it. Drinkable.
