Notes / Commercial Description:
Brewery Ommegang and HBO are partnering on a series of beers inspired by the critically-acclaimed drama Game of Thrones. Launching ahead of the season 3 debut on March 31, Iron Throne, a blonde ale, is the inaugural beer in the series and the result of a creative collaboration between Brewmaster Phil Leinhart and HBO.

“No one enjoys their job more than I do -- producing and developing new brews to delight lovers of fine beer, add to that the opportunity to collaborate on a beer based on the cultural phenomenon of Game of Thrones and exploring ways to make the beer truly reflect aspects from the show. It made us approach development in a completely new way and I think the first edition Iron Throne reveals that. With a Lannister currently on the throne, it made sense to do a delicate, but piercing Golden Blonde Ale with Noble hops. Iron Throne is certainly fair in color and soft in appearance, yet it still possesses a complexity and bite to be on guard for.” -Phil Leinhart, Brewmaster at Brewery Ommegang

Drank during Game of Thrones last night (I thought it to be apropos) and into a snifter glass it came out a lovely dark gold color like honey with a small white head that didn't leave much lacing.

Smell was pretty light and sweet, some herbal notes as well as a bit of Belgian character to it. Iron Throne has been my lightest of the GoT series beers thus far. It's light with a subtle sweetness, bit of lemon and citrus, hints of spicy Belgian yeast, some chewy malts. Overall I found this to be a nice drinking beer for a spring evening and polished off the bottle by myself during the show.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy golden, with a huge frothy head of pearly white suds. Spotty clouds of lace.

Aroma: Crisp wheat, citrus, sharp grains of paradise, lemon…really good!

Taste: Light and sunny somehow, not at all appropriate for the Game Of Thrones Iron Throne motif. That said, this is maybe my favorite so far of the GoT brews…refreshing and delicious, this is a solid beer.

Pours a hazy, lemon straw color with lots of carbonation and a huge, white head. Leaves much lacing.
Smells of yeasty, breadlines and lemon. Some hop detected.
Taste of lemon rind and nice breadlines in which sweetness lingers. The funkiness creates is enjoyable. The hop used is in small amounts, but adds to experience.
An immensely refreshing and crisp taste.
This was a unique and pleasant effort. I will try more game of thrones.
