Style: Belgian Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
Nothing is more evocative of summer than the beautiful aroma of flowers, and the favored flowers of brewers are hops. Our brand new summer ale, Fleur de Houblon (Hop Flowers), is brewed to bring the many elements of summer into a refreshing and easy-to-drink Belgian-style ale.

Fleur de Houblon is a rich gold color with distinct floral hops in the aroma that follow through in the taste. Whole-cone Bravo hops are used to impart their earthy, fruity, and floral aromas and flavors. The body and flavor are clean and dry, with pleasing complexity and spicy notes from both primary and secondary fermentation with our unique Ommegang house yeast.

Bottle poured into glass

Billowy white two finger foam cap subsides with very good lacings. Golden yellow, clear liquid with slight carbonation.

Aroma of citrus lemon and grass

Lemony taste on the front of the tongue spreads to the sides. Grassy kick on the side of the tongue. Bitterness on the sides and back . Slight bitterness on the aftertaste

Quite a bit of carbonation on the sip

Another very good beer from Ommegang

07/23/13 On tap at Rattle n Hum, NYC. Finding some taps left from a Belgian promotion I tried a taste comparison of this & d’Achouffe Houblon Chouffe, which is a triple. Due to circumstances beyond my control, (sort of), like limited funds & being dramatically close to my self imposed ABV limit, I ended up with the Ommegang. No regrets but I will be looking out for the Chouffe. It's robust flavor, body & alcohol were impressive but not of the moment. Not out of place by any means, just bad timing. It's even usurped what started a glowing review of the Ommegang. I'll be looking forward to both, equally, in the future.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. The label lists the abv at 6.8 % abv and there is a nice short description of the beer.

Appearance: The look of the body is cloudy and the color is a light golden hue. It’s head is tall bright white in color and long lasting. It slowly settles to a thin creamy foam covering which leaves nice lace patterns on the glass.

Smell: Fleur De Houblon has a classic Belgian character. Pale light grain with classic spicey Ommegang yeast mixed with some light citrusy, grassy and spicy hops.

Taste / Palate: The nose and tongue are right on the same page. The base is light pale grain with white pepper and clove like spicy yeast. It also brings a light and pleasant Belgian funk/barnyard note to the mix. Hops add a touch of dryness and mild bitterness along with balanced grassy, floral and citrusy lemon flavor notes. The palate is on and very easy drinking. It feels smooth and creamy yet still lively with carbonation.

Notes: In my opinion Ommegang just keeps on hitting home runs and this is no exception!

look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

A: The beer is slightly hazy golden yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation along with lots of fine particulates floating in suspension. It poured with a finger high bright white head that gradually died down, consistently leaving a short head covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of grassy and earthy yeast are present in the nose along with notes of peppery spices.
T: Like the smell, the overall taste has lots of flavors of grassy and earthy yeast along with hints of grainy malts and lemons while the finish is mostly dominated by flavors of peppery spices. The lemons become a bit stronger as the beer warms up.
M: It feels a bit shy of medium-bodied and rather dry on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. The peppery spices in the back end of the taste make your tongue prickle a little bit.
O: The lighter nature of the body and lemony flavors make this a nice beer for the summer that goes down easily.

12oz into tulip glass.

Pours a hazy, pale golden yellow with a craggy, billowy white head with great retention and spotty lacing.

Floral, lightly spicy hop character blending into light, phenolic clove notes from the Belgiam yeast.

Medium+ body, foamy, mild carbonation.

Nothing particularly unique about this one, just a very well done Belgian pale ale.
