Stout spiced with licorice root and star anise.

Ommegang and HBO® announce the newest beer in the Game of Thrones® collaboration series. Through its first three seasons, the critically acclaimed drama has become the biggest show on HBO. Take the Black Stout follows the highly coveted Iron Throne Blonde Ale, which flew off of shelves earlier this year. To satisfy the appetite of Game of Thrones fans, production of Take the Black Stout will more than double the final volumes of Iron Throne Blonde Ale.

Inspired by the brotherhood of the Night’s Watch, Take the Black Stout was made to be deep, dark and complex like those who have sworn the oath to defend Westeros against threats from the north. The label depicts the Weirwood tree where Jon Snow recited the oath before joining the Night’s Watch.

Dark pour. Bright light shows through as dark, dark, ruby. My brew has stationary speckles floating in it. Served cold in a frozen mug as per the label (40F/5C). Smells un assuming with faint dark chocolate, tobacco, musty oat.
The taste doesn't offer anything special. Bitter dark but no high notes of anything that presents itself. I really expected more. Best I can figure is it could be similar to a tame Guinness... but not in a good way.

Bottle poured into a Mountain Rambler Brewery snifter

A: Pours basically black with a frothy tan head that settles to a light layer and laces nicely.

S: Roasted malt, earthy char, espresso, a touch of dark chocolate, dark fruit, molasses, burnt sugar, super faint hints of licorice, and a touch of toffee sweetness.

T: Roasty, espresso, bittersweet dark chocolate, a little char, earthy, molasses, a bit of dark fruit, a little spice, super faint licorice, burnt sugar, and a touch of toffee sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: Nothing technically wrong with this one, but the adjuncts are near completely MIA. That could have something to do with them falling off with age, but still, you have to really look hard to find any licorice flavor. Drinkable, but disappointing.
*A buddy gave me this bottle, but I'm not quite sure how old it is.

750ml bottle as part of gift box. Inky black pour, lasting creamy beige head. Roasty aroma, dark chocolate, licorice. Roast malts up front in the taste, bitter, licorice flavors coming in behind, some chocolate. Dry at the finish

Poured from a bottle - dark as night with khaki head leaving minimal lacing.Nose is oddly bland with hints of roasty malt and faint licorice. Taste follows more or less ,weirdly bland again. Finish is on the dry side with not much else going on. Unusually boring for a stout .

Didn't love this one. I drank my share of it, and I did enjoy the last sip more than the first, so that's saying something. But it was probably my least favorite of the GoT beers from Ommegang that I've tried (and I've tried a lot). The flavors just didn't come together cohesively for me - the spices and malts and hops flavors weren't playing as a team. I did appreciate the smoothness and medium body of the beer, and it had a perfectly nice look to it. But the rest was underwhelming - I wouldn't seek this one out again (although it's retired anyway!)

Take the Black stout was part of my gift set of three from Ommegang. The stout is highly carbonated and tangy. Licorice root and bark is present in the profile. Star anise is another flavor in this stout.

The beer finishes dry and root bitterness lingers throughout the entirety of the experience.

An average beer, and I would seek out the Fire & Blood if you are looking for a GoT beer.

-jet black bottle pour with a creamy, tan foam cap and a light licorice aroma. The flavor is mild with licorice and a bit of leather noted. It is slightly sweet and toasted malt is most prominent. The finish is smooth. This is a lighter bodied stout.

Decanted from an 25.9 oz (750 ml) corked and caged bottle into a custom, Game of Thrones flute glass; no production information.
A: Pours the darkest brown to black with mahogany highlights, a three to four finger, light brown head, gorgeous retention, and solid, persistent, truly Belgian lacing.
S: Aromas of dark roast coffee beans, dark, unsweetened chocolate, dark berry fruit, licorice, black pepper, and toffee with multiple spicy notes.
T: Dry. Flavor derive from the nose and start more like a foreign extra with roasty coffee >> chocolate flavor. Spices seem to be cloves, maybe cardamom, but, of course, front and center licorice/star anise that meshes very seamlessly with the peppery bitterness and leaves a spice laden tingling on the palate and back of the tongue.
M: Full bodied which is enhanced by assertive effervescence.
O: Complex and increasingly interesting as it warms. Definitely in the foreign/extra stout range, but with spices. Sad that this will not be available going forward. A rock solid, domestic version of the style.

Got this in a gift set and first one I tried. Very bitter but flavorful. Brewed not too far from me.
