Notes / Commercial Description:
Ommegang and HBO® announce the newest beer in the Game of Thrones® collaboration series. Through its first three seasons, the critically acclaimed drama has become the biggest show on HBO. Take the Black Stout follows the highly coveted Iron Throne Blonde Ale, which flew off of shelves earlier this year. To satisfy the appetite of Game of Thrones fans, production of Take the Black Stout will more than double the final volumes of Iron Throne Blonde Ale.

Inspired by the brotherhood of the Night’s Watch, Take the Black Stout was made to be deep, dark and complex like those who have sworn the oath to defend Westeros against threats from the north. The label depicts the Weirwood tree where Jon Snow recited the oath before joining the Night’s Watch.

In time for the holidays, Take the Black Stout makes for the perfect gift. Shipping to distributors in September 2013, the beer is available in 750 ML bottles and 1/6 barrel kegs.

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

The Game of Thrones: Take the black stout was decent. It poured an opque black with tan head that did not lace. The scent had a hop bitterness mixed with roast. The taste was more bitter than expected and came off the pallet clean. Definitely some roast presence but bitter hops ruled. The mouthfeel was lighter than expected, and it had decent carbonation. Overall it was ok.

Purchased from the LCBO and served chilled into a pint glass.

Appearance - Very dark brown, nearly black in color. Ridiculous fist full of fingers poured into a tan head that lingers for a while. Tone of spidery lacing and a full cap of foam left on top of the beer.

Smell - Faint chocolate / caramel blend, some element of graininess and some noticeable fruit. A bit nutty smelling.

Taste - Chocolate, mostly bitter but balanced by fruit up front. Figs and raisin are in the equation. Quite bitter on the back end finishing mostly with chocolate.

Mouthfeel - Smooth and rich, low carbonation but not flat as the feel is still rich enough and dense.

Overall - A little unusual for a stout with all the fruit in there but it was a little different than a lot of beer out there. Reminiscent of chocolate covered fruits, mostly dark but elements of tropical fruit in there as well they're still in stores.

Poured a very dark brown and nearly black with a big foam tan head and a bed of creamy lace. The nose is mostly sweet. I detected hints of chocolate and light alcohol. It reminded me of a subdued quadruple aroma. The taste is also mostly sweet but with some spiciness in the finish. The feel is amazingly smooth. It feels like it is on the low side of medium bodied because of how easy it is to put this one down.
I really liked this one and I'm surprised it hasn't rated better.
