Notes / Commercial Description:
Ommegang and HBO® announce the newest beer in the Game of Thrones® collaboration series. Through its first three seasons, the critically acclaimed drama has become the biggest show on HBO. Take the Black Stout follows the highly coveted Iron Throne Blonde Ale, which flew off of shelves earlier this year. To satisfy the appetite of Game of Thrones fans, production of Take the Black Stout will more than double the final volumes of Iron Throne Blonde Ale.

Inspired by the brotherhood of the Night’s Watch, Take the Black Stout was made to be deep, dark and complex like those who have sworn the oath to defend Westeros against threats from the north. The label depicts the Weirwood tree where Jon Snow recited the oath before joining the Night’s Watch.

In time for the holidays, Take the Black Stout makes for the perfect gift. Shipping to distributors in September 2013, the beer is available in 750 ML bottles and 1/6 barrel kegs.

I like this one. The Stout is deep, dark and complex. Just like beer fans. I found the taste to be well balanced. The mouthfeel was quite good. The smell is woody, dark, with some nice coffee and yeast notes. You will notice a thick tan head with good carbonation. Back to taste. For me, the flavors pack a good punch. The hops come first and then I got pine, citrus, and roasted coffee.

This pours aggressive with a huge brown head that dissipates in a few minutes. The nose is thick and complex with notes of roasted malt, coffee, mixed nuts, and cream.

The taste shows some fairly intense flavors featuring hops at the forefront. Pine, citrus, and medicinal qualities feature in the front, before being shoved aside by the familiar roasted and coffee. Texture is light for a stout but the body and aftertaste help counteract this.

This is rich and flavorful, with more balance than I would expect. Not delicious, but complex and interesting.

I really haven't been a fan of these Game of Thrones beers and this one hasn't convinced me otherwise. They certainly aren't bad but they don't live up to their name.

Strong Belgian but the char and coffee overpower everything else. Can't taste much of the licorice even as it warms. Roasted malts are a nice touch. Smell is pleasant with a little alcohol smell showing through. Solid stout that I wished had a little more balance.
